Mount Prospect allows 'vicious' pets on village streets with ...

Post a story

Mount Prospect trustees gave partial reprieves to animals previously declared vicious, changing village rules to allow them to be walked on public ways, but only under strict conditions.

According to Police Chief John Dahlberg, the present village code provides that an animal that bites a person or another domestic animal without provocation can be declared vicious and cannot be walked on public ways. But Dahlberg said owners have expressed concerns over the restriction, saying it affects their ability to exercise their animals and is a quality of life issue for their animals.

With the unanimous vote on March 6, trustees waived a first reading and amended the code to allow such animals to be walked in public, but only under four conditions: the animal must be muzzled; it must be on a non-retractable leash or chain no more than 6 feet long; it must be leashed or chained to a three-point harness ? not a collar; and it must be restrained by someone 18 years old or older.

Dahlberg said he believes there are about 20 vicious animals ? all dogs ? in the village. Owners will be mailed notice of the code amendment.
