Breast Cancer? | Breast Cancer Symptoms X-THE OFFICIAL SITE

*Itchy* tiny bumps on the areola (the dark circle around the nipple) ARE one symptom of breast cancer. They can also be caused by about a hundred other things, though.

Because I have pretty bad eczema, I paid no attention to the rash around my nipple until after I read the pathology report from my mastectomies, three or four years after the rash began. That rash was Paget?s disease of the nipple (of the breast? I don?t remember.)

Paget?s (there?s a bone disease with his name, too, but they aren?t related) is definitely a form of breast cancer.

If you are concerned, you may ask your doctor ? at ANY age ? to do an exam, and, more important, show you how to do it. It?ll only take a little while, and having the doc guide your hands helps more than all of the shower cards in the world.

If you?re too embarrassed to ask your regular doc, call Planned Parenthood and ask to see one of their docs.

L.

***Edit*** After I wrote this, I did some more reading ? it?s been a few years. The bumps can be sores or flaky areas or other changes of the skin around the nipple. They may not itch or be very bothersome at all. Have all such skin changes checked by a doctor, especially if they are only on one nipple.

Last throes of Libya war focus on Sirte (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Libyan rebel forces were converging on Muammar Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte on Monday, hoping to deliver the coup de grace of their revolution but uncertain if the fallen strongman was holed up there.

The fugitive Gaddafi's whereabouts were still not known and it was possible he was still in hiding in Tripoli after it fell to rebel forces and his 42-year-old reign collapsed.

NATO war planes struck at Sirte, on the Mediterranean coast, for a third day on Sunday, a spokesman for the multi-national alliance said in Brussels.

"We're paying close attention to what's happening in Sirte because we know that there are remnants of the regime that are there," the spokesman said.

On the ground, rebel forces also closed in and said they would seize Sirte by force if negotiations for its surrender failed.

Gaddafi was born near Sirte, 450 km (300 miles) east of Tripoli, in 1942 and after he seized power in 1969 he built it up from a sleepy fishing village into an important city and power center of 100,000 people.

He still retains support and sympathy there, so whether or not he has chosen to retreat to the city to make a last stand, its capture will still be strategically and symbolically important to the rebels as they consolidate their victory.

One rebel commander said his forces were within 100 km of Sirte from the east and others were advancing from the west.

On the coastal highway east of Tripoli, tank transporters were carrying Soviet-designed T-55 tanks in the direction of Sirte. Rebels said the tanks were seized from an abandoned military base in Zlitan.

SKIRMISHES

Jamal Tunally, a rebel military commander in Misrata, told Reuters: "The front line is 30 km from Sirte. We think the Sirte situation will be resolved peacefully, God willing."

"Now we just need to find Gaddafi. I think he is still hiding underneath Bab al-Aziziyah like a rat," he said, referring to Gaddafi's Tripoli compound that rebels overran on Tuesday.

From the east, rebel fighters pushed 7 km past the village of Bin Jawad and secured the Nawfaliyah junction, a rebel spokesman said.

"We're going slowly," spokesman Mohammad Zawawi told Reuters. "We want to give more time for negotiations, to give a chance for those people trying to persuade the people inside Sirte to surrender and open their city."

Mindful of preserving their image to the world and stung by accounts that captured Gaddafi loyalists have been found dead with their hands tied behind their backs, the rebel leaders sent a text message urging followers not to abuse prisoners.

"Remember when you arrest any follower of Gaddafi, that he is like you, that he has dignity like you, that his dignity is your own dignity, and that it is enough humiliation for him that he is already a prisoner," it said.

Many corpses have been found, some of slain Gaddafi soldiers, others the victims of killings in cold blood.

Rebel military spokesman Colonel Ahmed Bani said there was concern for the fate of 40,000 prisoners who he said had been detained by Gaddafi's forces and who were still unaccounted for. It was possible some were being held in underground bunkers in Tripoli that rebels had been unable to locate.

Sarah Leah Whitson, of Human Rights Watch, said: "The evidence we have been able to gather so far strongly suggests that Gaddafi government forces went on a spate of arbitrary killing as Tripoli was falling."

The rebel leadership sought to establish control in the capital after days of confusion and sporadic skirmishing with the remnants of Gaddafi's forces.

The stench of rotting bodies and burning garbage still hung over the city and food, water and other supplies were running short, indications that despite the euphoria of victory, plenty of challenges lay ahead.

PIPELINE

Gaddafi, 69, is on the run and the fear among his foes is that he intends to lead an insurgency against them.

The National Transitional Council, recognized by dozens of states as Libya's legitimate government, rejected any idea of talks with him, saying he was a criminal who must be brought to justice.

"We did not negotiate when we were weak, and we won't negotiate now that we have liberated all of Libya," NTC information minister Mahmoud Shammam told a news conference.

The Associated Press quoted Gaddafi's spokesman, Moussa Ibrahim, as saying Gaddafi was still in Libya and wanted to discuss forming a transitional government with the NTC.

NTC officials say Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam and his spy chief should be tried in Libya, although they are wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

The NTC and its Western backers are acutely aware of the need to prevent Libya collapsing into the kind of chaos that plagued Iraq for years after the U.S.-led invasion of 2003.

The de facto government, whose leaders plan to move to Tripoli from Benghazi this week, is trying to impose security, restore basic services and revive the energy-based economy.

Officials said a gas export pipeline to Europe had been repaired and Libya's biggest refinery had survived the war intact.

In the west, Tunisian authorities reopened the main border crossing into Libya, restoring a supply route for Tripoli, after Gaddafi forces were driven out on Friday.

That should help relieve a looming humanitarian crisis in the city, where food, drinking water and medicines are scarce.

Trucks loaded with food and other goods were already moving across the Ras Jdir crossing toward Tripoli, about two hours' drive away.

The NTC issued messages urging electricity workers to get back to work and efforts to pay the salaries of public sector workers were under way.

Tripoli residents queued for bread or scoured grocery shops for food. Many took a stoical view of their plight.

"This is a tax we pay for our freedom," said Sanusi Idhan, a layer waiting to buy food.

Temporary ER Staff Linked to More Medication Errors (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Aug. 30 (HealthDay News) -- The use of temporary emergency department doctors and nurses poses an increased safety risk to patients, according to a new study.

Johns Hopkins researchers analyzed data on nearly 24,000 medication errors that occurred in emergency departments at 592 hospitals across the United States between 2000 and 2005, and found that temporary staff were twice as likely as permanent staff to be involved in medication errors that harmed patients.

The increased risk of medication errors associated with temporary staff may be due to their unfamiliarity with a hospital's practices and systems, the researchers suggested.

"You may know the medicine, but you still may get tripped up by the policies and procedures of an unfamiliar system. This can lead to more serious errors," study leader Dr. Julius Cuong Pham, an assistant professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine and emergency medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, said in a Hopkins news release.

It's easy to blame temporary staff themselves for the errors, but the problem is more widespread and complex, the study authors noted.

"A place that uses a lot of temporary staff may have more quality of care issues in general. It may not be the temporary staff that causes those errors but a function of the whole system," Pham said.

The study was published in the July/August issue of the Journal for Healthcare Quality.

The findings are particularly important in regard to temporary nurses, who are a substantial and growing part of the health care workforce due to a nursing shortage in the United States, the team pointed out in the news release. Temporary nurses are seen as a cheaper alternative to permanent nurses and are widely used to fill gaps in both short- and long-term work schedules.

Orbitz Flights, Hotels, Cars (for iPhone)

For booking on the go, Orbitz Flights, Hotels, Cars (for iPhone) is matched by only Travelocity (for iPhone) (Free, 2 stars) when it comes to porting the desktop travel experience to the smartphone. Unlike more targeted apps such as Expedia Hotel (for iPhone) (Free, 3.5 stars), Hipmunk Flight Search (for iPad) (Free, 3.5 stars), and Orbitz Hotels (for iPad)?(Free, 3.5 stars), Orbitz?s iPhone app lets customers to do a lot from the small screen, including, as the name suggests, booking flights, hotels, and car rentals.

Connected Traveler

While it?s a much better user experience than Travelocity?s app?which more closely resembles a mobile website?Orbitz Flights, Hotels, Cars still needs some UI tune-ups. More importantly, even though it carries over the price protection that made the Orbitz (Free, 4 stars) desktop site an Editors? Choice winner, Orbitz fails to provide a complete travel booking solution: Without the option to book flights with hotels, customers cannot benefit from the significant savings found in bundling. The result is a mixed bag, an app more complete?though less refined?than Orbitz?s iPad version and still secondary to the desktop site.

Hotel Booking
I began testing the iPhone app by comparing its hotel booking to that of the iPad. Unfortunately, there?s little basis of comparison. While its sibling takes advantage of the iPad?s mobile tech and screen estate, the iPhone version feels generic. Yes, there?s an option to locate using GPS (plus Orbitz also lets you manually input a city or address), but everything else feels like the desktop site, diminished. You specify your check-in and checkout dates, select number of guests and rooms via drop-downs, but once you get to the results screen, there are just two ways to explore hotels: Distance and Lowest Price. Forget about star ratings, amenities, or Orbitz?s own ?Best Value? hotels.

I settled on a Manhattan hotel called The Strand ($339/night). While Orbitz automatically retrieves the best value room (in this case the Superior Room), you can also tap See All Rooms to review all options (at The Strand there were five rooms scaling to the Deluxe Room, valued at $429). Under Hotel Details you can browse photos (sorry, no photo-swiping), pin the hotel to a Google Map, or peruse Orbitz user reviews, amenities, and the hotel description. I?m glad to see that Orbitz allows customers to access all of the hotel-related information from the site, though I do wish they had conceived a less text-heavy means of sharing that content. One area where Orbitz deserves praise, however, is in its app-wide integration of a login: Whether you?re booking a hotel, flight, or car rental, Orbitz allows customers to either manually enter billing information or sign into Orbitz to repurpose existing account details.

Flight Search
The Flights section follows the same basic structure of Hotels. You specify either a one-way or round-trip journey, enter destination and arrival places and dates, and choose your number of travelers. Unfortunately, the destination and arrival fields don?t use predictive text, so when I entered New York I had to select a specific airport from a second screen. On the other hand, Orbitz does allow you to add some useful options to your search, including Cabin (class), Preferred Airline (via drop-down), and a Flight Preference (a tick-box for non-stop flights).

As with Hotels, there are limited ways to sift through results. Orbitz lets customers sort by Lowest Price or Depart Time. Orbitz?s Matrix, one of the defining features of the desktop site, doesn?t make the cut (nor does the option to sort by Shortest Flight). Finally, when it comes to selecting a flight, I hope your fingers are smaller than mine: You can?t just tap a flight name; instead you must peck a tiny Select button to open results.

Car Rental
The last key section of the app is car rentals. Via drop-down you specify your pickup and drop-off airport or city, date and time, and driver?s age (21-24 or 25+). While there?s no sorting on the results page?cars automatically list by lowest price?you can filter by a car type (e.g. compact) or company (e.g. Hertz). The only snag I encountered in my testing was that the car rental section loaded quite slowly, even over Wi-Fi.?

Other Goodies
Orbitz Flights, Hotels, Cars has three sections that you probably won?t use?for good reason. A Help icon reveals a customer service contact number and some text-heavy FAQs. I personally cannot imagine reading FAQs on a 3-inch screen and Orbitz has already laced contact numbers throughout the app; add some quirky UI elements (e.g. menus within menus) and the Help section doesn?t feel terribly helpful. Orbitz does include a Flight Status icon, though honestly I would recommend downloading GateGuru (for iPhone) (Free, 4 stars) from which you may check flight statuses and do much, much more?such as scope out wait times and browse airport maps. Finally, Orbitz includes a MyTrips section, which, for all intents and purposes, is a link to its website. When you tap the icon the following alert pops up: ?Please note: We?re taking you to our full site to access your trips, while we improve our mobile MyTrips experience.?

One last feature to touch upon isn?t so much a feature of the app as it is a benefit of Orbitz?s ecosystem: price protection. Although Orbitz?s app lacks plenty of desktop functionality, you?ll still benefit from the same impressive protections that secured the site the Editors? Choice designation. With Automatic Hotel Price Assurance, Orbitz will automatically send you a check (for the difference) if another customer books the same room for less. Automatically is the key word here: You do nothing but book and Orbitz takes care of the rest. That said, if you do want to hunt, and if you find it for a lower price on another site, Orbitz?s Low Price Guarantee ensures you?ll get the difference plus a $50 discount on a future booking.

Solid Functionality, Siloed
For existing customers, Orbitz Flights, Hotels, Cars (for iPhone) is a worthwhile download. It brings to the smartphone important elements of the desktop site, including the Orbitz login for fast booking and customer protection for peace of mind. That said, the user experience won?t likely draw new customers into the fold, and, until the company offers some kind of exchange between the flight, hotel, and vacation bookings, don?t expect to find many compelling deals on the go. Try it today if you?re committed to Orbitz and you?re willing to relinquish a few flourishes for the convenience of mobile travel booking.

Mayor Bloomberg warned about Hurricane Irene in Spanish ...

By Teresa Puente, Monday at 12:59 pm

Mayor Bloomberg warned about Hurricane Irene in Spanish
New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg

As a newcomer to New York City it was interesting for me to observe the city's response to Hurricane Irene.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg had multiple press conferences before, during and after the storm and was very accessible to the media.

One thing that impressed me was that he also made brief statements to the public in Spanish.

"Por favor ya no salga a las calles quedanse a sus casas o en los refugios," Bloomberg said in Spanish as the hurricane drew near.

He told the Spanish-speaking public "don't go out to the streets, stay in your homes or in the shelters."

Now his accent isn't the best but at least he made an effort.

Also on the Office of the Mayor's Web page you can find press releases about Hurricane Irene in Spanish.

It makes sense that Mayor Bloomberg, who also supports immigration reform, would make brief remarks in Spanish considering the Latino population of New York City is 27 percent.

Chicago (my hometown)? is more than 25 percent Latino but I can't recall former Mayor Richard Daley making statements in Spanish, not even during the snowpocalypse in winter 2011 when more than 20 inches of snow fell paralyzing the city.

Now that it's Monday and the sun is shining on the city some residents are complaining that the government overreacted by shutting down the subways and buses and evacuating certain regions closest to the water.

From an outsider's point of view, I think the city response was spot on. Hurricane Irene spared New York City but many other parts of the state and nearby states like Vermont and New Jersey suffered serious damage. And there was loss of life in other states. It was a killer hurricane but it spared this city.

It's important that residents were informed and prepared, and it's reassuring to know that New York City officials made a major effort to get out that message in English and en espa?ol.

NYC subways to run again Monday

The New York City subway system will be up and running for the start of the work week Monday morning, transit officials said, but some pieces of the country's largest transit system will remain idle while inspectors check for any damage from Tropical Storm Irene.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority shut down all subways, buses and commuter trains Saturday in preparation for the storm. It was the first time a natural disaster ever closed the system down. On any given week day, New York City's subways cart about 5 million people, and commuters were left wondering how they would get to work.

After the storm came and left Sunday afternoon, limited city bus service started, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo and MTA Chairman Jay Walder said subway service would start up at 6 a.m. Monday.

They said service will be less frequent than normal and customers should expect longer waits and more crowded trains. Frequency of service will improve over the course of the day.

Meanwhile, damage assessments were continuing on the MTA'a Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad, which were hit hard by flooding and mudslides.

Before their annoucement, commuters were wondering how they would get around a city where most don't have cars and depend on public transit.

Domingo Diaz, 24, who lives in Brooklyn but works in SoHo, was asking a few of the neighborhood car service drivers what they planned to charge to take people into Manhattan on Monday. One quoted him a price of $65, which is at least $20 more than the usual rate.

He said the decision to stop the subways as the storm approached was "the smart call."

The limited bus service started up, first in Manhattan and the Bronx, then in Queens and Brooklyn. Staten Island was still on its own.

To get the subways running again, inspectors planned to walk all 800 miles of track, looking for damage to rails, switches and power sources, the transit agency said. Then they planned to test the tracks by running trains on them. Floodwater also would have to be pumped from train yards and other spots.

Story: Travelers wait for flights to resume after Irene

Carole Ryavec, a resident of the Upper East Side, came out for a stroll through Central Park when the worst was over early Sunday afternoon. City workers were busy cleaning up fallen trees and debris.

"Of course we dodged a bullet!" said Ryavec. "We were darned lucky that the winds decreased."

Ryavec said the subway is her main mode of transportation to her job in Brooklyn, where she is a contracts consultant for the city's Department of Education.

She figured she wouldn't be going to work if the subway wasn't running.

"It can't happen without the subway," she said.

Commuters in the suburbs were isolated from the city, with rail lines on Long Island and in the north shut down for the storm. Dozens of trees fell on the Long Island Rail Road tracks, and more than 600 workers were assessing the damage, said the railway's spokesman, Sam Zambuto.

Besides clearing fallen trees, workers had to replace 500 crossing gates that were taken down before the storm because they could be blown away by the high winds that Irene brought with it, he said.

Story: Floods build in US as weakened Irene sloshes into Canada

Meanwhile, mud slides, fallen trees and flooding rendered Metro-North Railroad tracks unusable, officials said. The commuter rail serves regions north of New York City, from Westchester County to southern Connecticut.

In the harbor-front town of Greenport, nearly every store was boarded up with plywood. A few people ventured out among the streets, which were still being buffeted by powerful winds off the water.

"We came out here looking for coffee because our house lost power," said Angelica Bengloa, who is vacationing at her summer home in nearby East Marion. "We found a place open here, and as soon as they served us, their power went out. So we're very lucky."

Bengloa said her family is prepared for several days without electricity. She doesn't have to go to work in Manhattan this week because she's still on vacation, so she's not too concerned about hunkering down for a while in her waterfront home, which scraped through the storm with hardly any damage aside from a few downed tree limbs.

"We are prepared. We have batteries and food," she said.

Ethnic killings spark doom in Pakistan's biggest city (Reuters)

KARACHI (Reuters) ? Imran Ali's kidnappers jabbed pistols into his sides and led him down a quiet street as fresh ethnic carnage spread fear in Pakistan's biggest city, Karachi.

Two other people blindfolded and held with the construction worker had just been shot at point-blank range. It was his turn.

Minutes later he was face down in a ditch filled with sewage, playing dead until the men were satisfied that three bullets had done the job and walked away.

"It feels like people are just being picked off in the streets because of their ethnic background. How can we live like this," Ali, a member of Karachi's Urdu-speaking community, said from a hospital bed.

"Apocalypse is coming to Karachi."

Pakistan's financial capital has a long history of ethnic violence between the dominant Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) -- which represents the Mohajirs, descendants of Urdu-speakers who migrated from India after Pakistan's birth in 1947 -- and the ethnic-Pashtun Awami National Party (ANP).

Those parties are often accused of using ethnic gangs in a turf war over everything from land-grabbing schemes to extortion rackets to votes, allegations they deny.

But the worst bloodshed since the army was called in to ease street battles in the 1990s has created an unprecedented sense of doom and increased fears over instability in Pakistan, a strategic nuclear-armed U.S. ally.

"The political parties are giving their foot soldiers greater freedom. They seem to be doing whatever they want now," said a senior security official who refers to the violence as "ethnic cleansing."

The latest wave of violence came after the MQM pulled out of a national and provincial coalition with the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP). More than 400 people have been killed since July.

TORTURE CHAMBERS, BODY PARTS IN GRAIN SACKS

Torture chambers have emerged. Some people are drilled, burned, carved up and beheaded. Body parts are put in grain sacks and dumped in alleyways in a chilling new dimension to the strife, security officials say.

Some of the acts are filmed on mobile telephones and sent around to maximise the terror.

Security concerns by the United States and other Western allies in Pakistan have focused on al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Islamabad has come under even more pressure to tackle militancy since U.S. special forces discovered that al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had been living comfortably in Pakistan and then killed him in a secret raid.

The more complex conflict in Karachi could be far more destabilising in the long term, especially to the South Asian country's weak economy.

Karachi, home to ports, the stock exchange and central bank, contributes 25 percent of Pakistan's gross domestic product and is the country's main industrial base.

It is also a major transit point for supplies for U.S. forces in Afghanistan so upheaval here can hinder efforts to pacify the Taliban next door.

Coming up with a formula to tame Karachi won't be easy.

The ruling Pakistan People's Party often needs Karachi's political heavyweights as allies in the federal government. Cracking down too hard on them means losing political influence.

So the chaos is likely to go unchecked. As the politicians keep deploying more and more muscle on the streets and forging alliances with powerful policemen, already shaky law enforcement agencies will be undermined.

A police force of just 33,000 charged with protecting a population of about 18 million lacks the resources to rein in hardened criminals with plenty of machineguns, AK-47 assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades. Authorities are only starting to install proper surveillance cameras.

"There are smaller and smaller gaps between cycles of violence now," Karachi police chief Saud Mirza told Reuters. "The police don't have time to catch their breath or gather intelligence on what's going on any more."

There are no signs reconciliation is possible. Political party leaders often get text messages saying "we will get you."

At the ANP headquarters in a Karachi villa, regional chairman Shahi Syed opens up what he says is a state intelligence file on illegal MQM activities.

"You see. This MQM member killed 100 people in 1992 and then he was recently set free. You see. Here is a list of their weapons," said Syed, a burly man who drives a black Mercedes with the license plate ANP 001 and owns a Dubai car dealership.

"It has become a free-for-all."

Across town at the MQM complex protected by a guard with a machinegun and others who run mirrors under visitor cars to check for bombs, party officials point the finger at the ANP.

The MQM, which portrays itself as a secular champion of Pakistan's middle class working against feudalism, dominates Karachi.

Party leader Altaf Hussain, who lives in self-exile in London, fires up hundreds of thousands of supporters who faithfully gather for his video speeches.

Yet the MQM still feels threatened by the ANP because of the huge explosion of Pashtuns that have migrated to Karachi over the years from Pakistan's northwest.

Most of the killing takes place in poor areas on the edges of Karachi, where territory is clearly marked. "ANP" is written in huge letters on the steep rock cliff overlooking Orangi Town, one of the worst-hit places.

Down below, its worn-out red flags flutter from street poles running through the slum, where people live near piles of fetid garbage that attract mangy dogs and rats.

Authorities can barely offer basic services, let alone ease the ethnic hatred that has left bullet holes in the walls of stores and homes, and mental scars.

"WE WILL KILL WHOEVER THREATENS US"

It's not just supporters of one political party or another that are gunned down. There is a growing belief that anyone can be hunted, simply because of their ethnic identity.

Kamran Muhammad, 23, was buying supplies for his family's sweets shop when he was abducted, had his hands and feet bound and beaten with clubs before being shot in the head and jaw.

He was neither a Mohajir, Pashtun or Baluch but his killers probably thought otherwise.

"We showed the young children of the family his bruises and the bullet holes. We want them to know how dangerous Karachi has become. That they must be careful," said his father, Muhammad Hanif, his eyes swelling with tears.

"From now on we will just kill whoever threatens us."

The murders have prompted business leaders, who lose millions of dollars every time Karachi's troubles bring the city to a standstill, and others to call for army intervention.

The spike in violence is raising the age-old question of whether Pakistan's civilian government, like the one ruling now, will ever be able to handle crises.

The military, seen as far more effective, has run the South Asian country for more than half of its history.

"Karachi's precarious situation is raising fresh doubts about whether Pakistan's civilian leaders will ever be able to manage the country," said Kamran Bokhari of STRATFOR global intelligence firm.

At Karachi's Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center, emergency department joint director Seemi Jamali is proud to say the institution does not turn away patients because of their ethnicity, as do other hospitals. But the latest ethnic bloodletting is draining the little optimism she has left.

"My nine-year-old son hides under the bed when he hears the shooting at night," said Jamali. "He calls me five or six times every time I go out and asks 'mommy are you safe?'"

In one of the wards, there was evidence of increasingly random carnage. One patient was sprayed with gunfire on a bus. Another in a nearby bed was wounded when men on motorcycles opened fire on a crowded market.

The army is unlikely to step in any time soon. It is already stretched fighting the Taliban insurgents.

Taking on hard criminals who mastered every inch of Karachi's congested neighbourhoods could bring further humiliation after the bin Laden operation was conducted on Pakistani soil without the knowledge of the military.

That's one reason Home Affairs adviser Sharfuddin Memon, who runs a hotline designed to give Karachi's residents a chance to complain about the police force, believes more time and money must be poured into law enforcement.

"Karachi's leaders have to find a way to set aside their differences and help the police," he said, after listening to three angry factory owners complain that someone posing as a PPP official was trying to extort money from them.

"But there is no political will."

Much of Karachi looks unscathed by the ethnic killings. Rickshaws jam bustling streets where Pakistanis frequent roasted chicken restaurants and spice markets.

Trendy young men with laptop computers sip cappuccino and espresso at Western-style cafes. The wealthy shop in fancy malls. But it's clear that the new ethnic flare-ups are causing more alarm than ever.

Security officials are hearing reports that identity cards of murder victims were studied to determine ethnicity before they were shot -- scenes reminiscent of the Lebanese civil war in the 1970s.

Some residents are taking matters into their own hands.

"More and more of my customers are buying weapons for their own protection rather than for sport," said arms and ammunition shop owner Basher Aimed, sitting beside a rifle rack.

"I am carrying a gun for the first time. I have seen the footage of the killings and body parts that are going around."

HTC Omega spotted in the wild on Algerian auction site?

Just a few days after its renders first leaked, the HTC Omega has apparently been spotted in the wild, on an Algerian auction site, of all places. French blog Mon Windows Phone claims that the rumored Mango device may sport a Snapdragon MSM8255 1.5Ghz processor, 512MB of RAM and a 3.8-inch LCD, though it's hard to glean too many specifics from the blurry images featured on the auction site. The blog also spotted an eight megapixel camera around back, along with that front-facing shooter that Microsoft's been touting, while the listing claims that the phone boasts up to 8GB of storage capacity. The white-and-gray Omega is rumored to debut at this week's HTC event in London, though details on price and availability remain unclear (the highest online bid, for what it's worth, is currently at around $540). Hit up the links below to see the full array of images.

Home & Family ? Blog Archive ? Energy Efficient Windows: Are the ...

There is a big push currently for homeowners to build ?green? or to remodel their homes to be more energy efficient. The upfront cost of green building materials and energy efficient windows and appliances can seem overwhelming to many homeowners. The high initial cost of becoming energy efficient causes some to question whether going green is worth the expense. Making your home more energy efficient does hold up under a cost benefit analysis; here are some of the ways it may benefit you.

Your monthly energy use will drop noticeably after the installation of energy efficient windows. Energy efficient windows are beneficial to the homeowner across seasons; they will always lower your monthly bill. Energy efficient windows are always an asset; but, in reality, they have the greatest financial benefit in climates that vary widely from season to season.

The cost of the most popular energy efficient windows averages around 165 dollars. If you own, or are building, an average sized home, you will likely need between 15 and 25 windows. If you do the math, you will likely spend just around 3,000 dollars. It?s difficult to say what you will save each year, but it is likely to be between 125 and 465 dollars.

These windows will save you anywhere between 125-465 dollars per year. The wide variation is due to regional climate and utility rate differences. If a homeowner saves 200 dollars per year, it will take about twelve years for him to recover the investment. However, the benefits aren?t only financial, you can also benefit by reducing your carbon footprint!

If you can afford to make your home more energy efficient this year, your financial reward will be far greater. The federal government is currently offering a tax credit available to all homeowners until December 2010. Replacing older windows with energy efficient windows can earn the homeowner a 1500-dollar tax credit if done before the end of this year. Windows are not the only efficiency update that will earn individuals a tax credit, however, certain appliances insulation and other updates will also earn you money back on your investment. Accomplishing energy efficiency updates before the end of the year will significantly reduce the time it takes to recoup your investment.

One More Thing?

One-more-thing..I sat down last night to write about Steve Jobs' resignation as Apple CEO and something funny happened: I had nothing to say. This is not normal for me. I don't get writer's block.?I often write thousands of words about what many would consider the?minutia of tech. And yet, when it came to writing about one of the biggest stories we're ever likely to see in this space, a story that far transcends tech, I was quite literally at a loss for words. So instead I read what everyone else had to say. Some articles were excellent, many were very good, others read far too much like?obituaries. More came today. I kept reading. Slowly, two things struck me. First, I've never seen anything quite like the outpouring of emotion that people are showing in response to this news.?Second, what we're witnessing right now is Jobs' final masterstroke.

Plumbers Walnut Creek | Amazing Home Improvement

My guess is you are here because your home is in need of some repair and you are just not sure if it is a plumber you need or a handyman. You have found the right place to figure it out!

A plumber should be able to help you with anything plumbing related whether it be a backed up drain or a new water heater they should be skilled and have the experience to handle it. As a plumber we are trained to handle anything to do with the flow of water and gas in and out of your home. From the faucet to the pipes leading into your home.

Unfortunately sometimes there are companies that advertise themselves as plumbers but really are not a plumber so much as a general contractor. A General Contractor can be a good person to hire if your looking into doing a bigger job for instance a kitchen remodel or new addition to your home. But for the basic plumbing job a Walnut Creek Plumber is what you need.

Plumbers have much more specific knowledge and experience. They focus on plumbing, pipes, and how to most effectively take care of these problems. Always hire a licensed plumbing contractor, this will ensure they have the knowledge and experience to solve your plumbing problem. They will also need to have liability, worker?s comp, and automobile insurance that is current and active to protect you and your home in case of any problems.

]]>

Plumbers usually provide the following services:

Drain Cleaning
Water Heater Installations & Repairs
Tankless Water Heater Installations & Repairs
Faucet Installations & Repairs
Toilet Installations & Repairs
Repiping- Including gas, water, and drain or sewer lines.
Backflow Testing- They must have a separate certification in order to perform this type of work.
Water Service Repairs and Replacements
Pipe Repairs
Garbage Disposals

This is just a small list of actual plumbing jobs performed by plumbers. There are many more situations plumbers take care of.

To hire a plumber look for a well respected plumber in your community. This may be by word of mouth, referral companies, google, or your local phone book. When deciding on a always make sure they are rated well with your local Better Business Bureau, their license is current and active, they can prove their insurance is current and ask for a couple recommendations especially when performing a larger plumbing job.

Keep in mind many plumbers will try to charge you for an estimate in means of a diagnostic charge or trip charge. Be careful of this, many companies are reputable and charge for these but some are more interested in getting the most money they can and are not fair to the customer?s trying to get the recommended three bids before hiring a plumber.

Another really important factor for hiring a plumber will be their warranties and how they handle customer satisfaction. For instance you would not want to hire a plumber who will not warranty their work. If they are unwilling to stand behind their work, why not? It could be that they use inferior materials or their employees are not experienced to handle the work so rather than having to fix what may not be installed properly they choose to install and walk away. Also if you were completely dissatisfied with the work performed how would they handle it? I believe in 100% customer satisfaction, no matter what type of service or product I am purchasing. If I have a bad experience or a less than stellar experience I would expect the company to fix it. Plumbers should have to live by this motto just as much as the big box stores do!

Keep in mind not every plumber will be a good fit for every customer make sure you find a plumber you trust and feel comfortable with before you hire for your next plumbing job!!

Video: Anderson Silva loves canaries, harps and cheeseburgers

Burger King Brazil recently signed on as a sponsor for UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva. Just before his UFC 134 bout with Yushin Okami, we see what that means. Silva lipsynching Minnie Riperton? Of course.

I never knew of Silva's love for playing the harp, or canaries, or jewel-encrusted dogs, but the man is multi-faceted. He likes to dance, do impressions, eat grotesquely large cheeseburgers, and kick people in the face. This is a man who cannot be pigeonholed.

For his next trick, Silva will need to win a rematch against Okami, the last fighter to put a loss on Silva's record. (Okami won via disqualification due to an illegal kick.) Will Silva pull it off?

Taking The Best Home Improvement Book | Home Improvement Tricks

For most people, buying a home is the single largest investment a person or couple will make and keeping the home well maintained and in tip top condition will only add to its value. Should the home be put on the market for sale, one of the first questions a savvy buyer will ask the seller or real estate agent for is a list of what improvements have been made to the house.

This question is very important when it comes to older homes which could be built with brick, concrete or stucco and especially vintage wood frame homes, with or without siding, as they are prime candidates for home improvements. The list of what needs to be done to your home can get extensive but with the help of the best home improvement book to guide you it will make any home improvement job much easier.
