Obama wants gun violence measures passed in 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Recalling the shooting rampage that killed 20 first graders as the worst day of his presidency, President Barack Obama pledged to put his "full weight" behind legislation aimed at preventing gun violence.

Obama voiced skepticism about the National Rifle Association's proposal to put armed guards in schools following the Dec. 14 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. The president made his comments Saturday in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Instead, the president vowed to rally the American people around an agenda to limit gun violence, adding that he still supports increased background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity bullet magazines. He left no doubt it will be one of his top priorities next year.

"It is not enough for us to say, 'This is too hard so we're not going to try,'" Obama said.

"I think there are a vast majority of responsible gun owners out there who recognize that we can't have a situation in which somebody with severe psychological problems is able to get the kind of high capacity weapons that this individual in Newtown obtained and gun down our kids," he added. "And, yes, it's going to be hard."

The president added that he's ready to meet with Republicans and Democrats, anyone with a stake in the issue.

The schoolhouse shootings, coming as families prepared for the holidays, have elevated the issue of gun violence to the forefront of public attention. Six adult staff members were also killed at the elementary school. Shooter Adam Lanza committed suicide, apparently as police closed in. Earlier, he had killed his mother at the home they shared.

The tragedy immediately prompted calls for greater gun controls. But the NRA is strongly resisting those efforts, arguing instead that schools should have armed guards for protection. Some gun enthusiasts have rushed to buy semiautomatic rifles of the type used by Lanza, fearing sales may soon be restricted.

Obama seemed unimpressed by the NRA proposal. "I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools," he said. "And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem."

The president said he intends to press the issue with the public.

"The question then becomes whether we are actually shook up enough by what happened here that it does not just become another one of these routine episodes where it gets a lot of attention for a couple of weeks and then it drifts away," Obama said. "It certainly won't feel like that to me. This is something that - you know, that was the worst day of my presidency. And it's not something that I want to see repeated."

Separately, a member of the president's cabinet said Sunday that rural America may be ready to join a national conversation about gun control. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the debate has to start with respect for the Second Amendment right to bear arms and recognition that hunting is a way of life for millions of Americans.

But Vilsack said Newtown has changed the way people see the issue. "I really believe that this is a different circumstance and a different situation," Vilsack said on CNN.

Vilsack said he thinks it's possible for Americans to come together. "It's potentially a unifying conversation," he said. "The problem is that these conversations are always couched in the terms of dividing us. This could be a unifying conversation, and Lord knows we need to be unified."

Besides passing gun violence legislation, Obama also listed deficit reduction and immigration as top priorities for 2013. A big deficit reduction deal with Republicans proved elusive this month, and Obama is now hoping Senate Democratic and Republican leaders salvage a scaled-back plan that avoids tax increases for virtually all Americans.

In addition, he issued a defense of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who has been mentioned as one of the leading candidates to replace Leon Panetta as defense secretary.

Hagel supported the 2002 resolution approving U.S. military action in Iraq, but later became a critic of the war. He has been denounced by some conservatives for not being a strong enough ally of Israel. Also, many liberals and gay activists have banded against him for comments he made in 1998 about an openly gay nominee for an ambassadorship.

Obama, who briefly served with Hagel in the Senate, stressed that he had yet to make a decision but called Hagel a "patriot."

Hagel "served this country with valor in Vietnam," the president said. "And (he) is somebody who's currently serving on my intelligence advisory board and doing an outstanding job."

Obama noted that Hagel had apologized for his 14-year-old remark on gays.

    Kanex mySpot

The Kanex mySpot ($59.99 MSRP) is a tiny access point (AP) used to create a wireless network when you only have one wired Internet connection. MySpot is handy if, for example, you are in a hotel room or convention hall and only have access to one live Ethernet cable. Kanex specializes in devices for Apple, and keeping in line with the wants of many Apple fans, the company makes mySpot very easy to set up. In fact setup is much simpler than most other travel routers and access points?it's practically plug-and-play. But this device serves only as a wireless AP: It doesn't offer any router functionality.

This means you don't get DHCP capabilities or the ability to create a robust network in which clients can share data. The Kanex mySpot can only deliver Internet access to wireless clients in the situation where you only have one wired connection via an Ethernet cableMySpot also is limited in that it only supports WEP and 802.11 b/g. While it works as advertised, there are other travel routers on the market that deliver more functionality.

    Specs
The pocket-sized mySpot looks like a chunky Pez candy dispenser. Its dimensions are 2.27 "x 1.0" x 0.75" (HDW). The device connects to a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port on a laptop or some other client. The USB plug tucks into a groove on the mySpot and is removed from that groove when plugging into a laptop, for instance. The other end of mySpot has a soft, removable cap which exposes an Ethernet port.

MySpot can only create a 2.4GHz WLAN that supports 802.11b/g. It also supports only WEP security, lacking the more secure WPA and WPA2. You can password-protect the WLAN you create with a 5 or 13 character ASCII password. Still, I would be hesitant to conduct any sensitive Internet business with this setup, such as online banking or shopping with credit cards.?

Because mySpot is an AP and has no routing functionality, it picks up the settings of the network of the wired Ethernet connection. So whatever IP addressing information that Ethernet cable's network has, will be passed onto any clients connected to the mySpot wirelessly. You have no control over IP addresses with the Kanex device.? Again, since the purpose is not to create a full-featured wireless LAN, that's suitable for those only looking to get their tablet and smart phone connected to the single Internet connection available in a hotel room.

    Setup
To set up mySpot, I plugged the USB connector into a USB 2.0 port of a Dell laptop. I then plugged an Ethernet cable attached to DSL broadband into the MySpot's Ethernet port.

MySpot has two LEDs?one lights blue up when it detects a live Internet connection, and the other lights up red when it's connected to USB (I find it absolutely annoying when vendors use a red LED for a problem-free connection on networking products. Most network administrators are only used to seeing reds and oranges when there are connection issues!)

After I connected the mySpot, I had an unsecured SSID named Kanex MySpot-A5F. I connected to this network and was able to get into the mySpot's web-based interface. There isn't a lot to configure with this simple device. You can change the SSID from the default as well as create a password, or change the wireless channel. This is the extent of the settings. You can't even hide the SSID for extra protection against prying eyes. That's all there really is to setup.

I was easily able to connect two laptops to the mySpot WLAN using either a 5 character or 13 character password. I was able to connect an Android phone with no security, but once I set up either a 5 or 13 character password enabling WEP, I could not connect my phone. This is a potentially major problem with the mySpot. Not all devices can connect with WEP encryption. Once I removed the password (removing the WEP encryption) I was able to connect my Android phone without issue. For Kanex to be of more value, it would need to have WPA2 encryption, which is supported by most popular wireless devices and gadgets.

    Easy Setup is Best Feature
I really like how easy mySpot is to set up. Travel routers and APs can often be confusing to configure for the average user on the go. Unfortunately, a lack of modern-level wireless encryption and no support for 802.11N are major oversights with this device. Since it works as advertised, it gets 2.5 out of 5 stars. For a better option, check out our Editors' Choice travel Wi-Fi router?the ZuniConnect Travel Router, which supports 802.11 b/g/n, handles IP addressing intelligently, and supports WPA2.

Aliens! Gangsters! Superheroes! 10 video games for 2013

    Featured

    1 day

The holiday shopping season is officially over?and that means the spasm of big game launches is over as well,?right? Well, no. In some ways, the rush of video?game releases?is just getting started.

For a variety of?reasons, some of the games we were most looking forward to getting our thumbsticks on in 2012?had launch dates pushed back into early 2013. Quite a few hotly?anticipated games are stacked up for a debut in?the new year?... and?some are just weeks away from arriving on shelves.

And while the spring game line-up is crowded, the rest of the ?year is looking pretty packed?as well. Quite a few?best-selling game franchises will make a big return in 2013 while some brand new titles are getting ready to tempt players with original stories and?intriguing new?gameplay.

Below you'll find 10 of the games we're most looking forward in 2013. Stop by the discussion section?to let us know which titles you're saving your?hard earned?gold coins for.

    "Dead Space 3," ?Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC?-?Feb. 5
The?space-faring fright?fest that is the "Dead Space" series gets a new entry in the next few weeks. But while the?previous games dropped players?into terrifying solo mission filled with grotesque?creatures known as Necromorphs, this newest game?encourages players to?experience these monstrosities (and the fear they inspire)?with a friend.

Two-player, drop-in/drop-out co-operative play is the name of the?game as?you and buddy head to the icy planet of?Tau Volantis to discover the source of the Necromorph plague. Sure, you can go it all alone, but you'll get more out of the?survival horror?story if you partner up. Also, you'll have someone to hug when the undead leap at you from the dark.?

    "Aliens:?Colonial Marines," Wii?U,?Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation?3?-?Feb. 12
Speaking of a good space-faring scare, the "Alien" franchise is about to get another installment, in the form of a?video?game.?Not only has?Gearbox Software billed?"Aliens: Colonial Marines" as the spiritual sequel to Jim Cameron's?"Aliens"?? the second "Alien"?movie ??but the game?is even considered part of the canon by 20th Century Fox.

InGame editor Todd Kenreck got an advance look at "Aliens: Colonial Marines." Check out his video?above.

As the name suggests, you get to play a U.S.?Colonial Marine on a mission to investigate the U.S.S. Sulaco spaceship, and?find out what happened to Ellen Ripley and?her crew.?As you play, you'll get to visit some of the most famous?locations from the films and wield some of their?most iconic weapons and equipment. And?we're hoping that, at some point in the game, we'll also get to utter the phrase, "Game over man, game over!"

    "Rayman Legends," Wii U?-?Feb. 26
The bright, colorful, zany platforming game "Rayman Origins" was one of my very?favorite games of 2011. And "Rayman Legends"???a direct sequel to that game???looks like it will offer even more?music-filled, action-packed, wacky fun???but with a new twist.?That is, "Rayman Legends"???originally scheduled to arrive in November???will launch exclusively for Nintendo's new Wii U game machine in February instead. And since it's a Wii U exclusive, that?means it will be putting the machine's unique tablet-style GamePad?controller to use.

I gave?"Legends" a try at the Penny Arcade Expo earlier this year and loved the way?one player could use?the GamePad controller ??and?its touchscreen ??to assist up to four other players using standard?Wii Remote controllers. You can use the GamePad to do?things like grab and pull creatures out of the ground, open secret paths and knock enemies out of the way. I dare say "Rayman Legends" is a very good reason to pick up a Wii U if you haven't already.

    "Tomb Raider,"?Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC?-?March 5
The forthcoming "Tomb Raider" game is another title?that found itself?delayed from 2012 to 2013. But hopefully that extra time will mean extra polish for?this reboot of one of the most famous series?in video?game history.?

The action-adventure/platforming?game is set to?re-imagine leading lady Lara Croft's early, formative years. And while it has already inspired its fair share of controversy?due to an alleged sexual assault scene, we can't wait to see the new places the?developers take this storied franchise. From what we've seen so far, Croft has been given a darker, grittier backstory (a la the?character reboot we've seen in?the new Batman/Dark Knight?films). It's a backstory that makes her more human and less of a (top-heavy)?caricature. And to that we say: It's about time.

    "Bioshock Infinite," PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC?-?March 26
Earlier this year, the team at Irrational Games told?us we'd have to wait until next year?to get our hands on "BioShock Infinite" because they wanted more time to make it "even more extraordinary."?Needless to say, after all this waiting, our expectation for this game???the third in the critically acclaimed?BioShock franchise???are very high.

And, indeed, "Infinite"?will take us back in time and?high up into the sky, as we play?agent Booker DeWitt, a man sent on a mission?to the airborne city of Columbia. His mission: to find a young woman named Elizabeth (recently?modeled by Russian gamer/costumer?Anna Moleva). This first-person shooter promises to?drop players into a intrigue-and-adventure-filled?alternate vision?of America during the Age of Steam, while bestowing upon?us?some unique powers.

The waiting isn't over yet, but in the meantime you can check out the new?video above, which offers a preview of the first few minutes of "Bioshock Infinite."

"Injustice: Gods Among Us," Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U - April
There is an age-old question asked by geeks of all ages: Who would win in a fight ... ?Batman or Superman? Flash or the Green Lantern? Catwoman or Wonder Woman? The forthcoming fighting game "Injustice: Gods Among Us" will, at last, provide us with the answers we seek.

The game drops many of your favorite heroes and villains from the DC Comics universe into "a world where the lines between good and evil are blurred." And it's here that the developers at NetherRealm promise "Injustice" will give us "heroes and villains engaging in epic battles on a massive scale." A look at the trailer above shows they aren't kidding. When superheroes collide, mere mortals better run and hide.

"The Last of Us," PlayStation 3?-?May 7
Brought to us by the developers behind the critically acclaimed?Uncharted games, "The Last of Us" not only promises to?blend survival and action gaming?elements in unique ways, but to take us on a story-driven journey with deep, well-crafted characters.

The game takes place 20 years after a plague decimated the population, leaving civilization in ruins and the survivors?not only fighting off?infected humans but fighting with?their own fellow survivors as well. It's in this setting that we meet the grizzled survivor?Joel and the?14 year-old girl, Ellie, that he's charged with protecting. "The Last of Us" is the kind of game aimed at?grown-up players looking for thoughtfully?crafted,?grown-up gaming. Fans of "The Walking Dead" should definitely be?lining up for this one.

    "Grand Theft Auto V,"?PlayStation 3, Xbox 360?-?Spring 2013
At long last, Grand Theft Auto?is hitting the road again. The?GTA games have pioneered open-world gaming, giving players the freedom to roam immense digital landscapes filled with crime,?adventure and?some very colorful characters. And Rockstar says that "GTAV" ??which takes place in and around?the fictional Southern California city of Los Santos???will be its?biggest game?yet.

"Grand Theft Auto V"?will allow players to switch between three friends/partners in crime and will?center around performing heists.?We'll get to play?Michael, a wealthy ex-gangster; Trevor, a wise-cracking crazy man with a short fuse; and?Franklin, a professional repo man. Sounds like a recipe for?trouble?... and lots of crime-filled?fun. Meanwhile,?"GTAV" developer Rockstar Games?recently revealed that the game will head underwater as well. And as the new?screenshot above indicates, that means we better get ready?for ...?sharks!

    "Pikmin 3," Wii U?-?Spring/Summer 2013
Nintendo recently announced that it was delaying its?highly anticipated real-time?strategy game until the second quarter of 2013. And while waiting is a bummer, we're used to it when it comes to this delightful series.

It's been?eight long?years since "Pikmin 2" let us control swarms of the?adorable?little ant-like creatures?as they try to survive in the big BIG world. With "Pikmin 3,"?we'll be able to control these delightful Pikmin using either the GamePad or Wii Remote controller as we?set them to various tasks such as breaking down barriers, harvesting food and?taking out enemies. And?for the first time ever, we'll?get to see these creatures and their strange, wonderful?world in gorgeous HD.

    "Beyond: Two Souls,"?PlayStation 3?- Late?2013
"'Beyond' will be unlike anything else you've experienced before," David Cage, the director for this forthcoming PlayStation 3?game has promised. And we have good reason to believe him. "Beyond: Two Souls" is being made by the team at?Quantic Dream, the development company that brought us the surprisingly compelling and emotionally mature cinematic game "Heavy Rain."?

"Beyond: Two Souls" is described as?a "psychological action thriller;" and it will star the excellent Academy Award-nominated actress?Ellen Page?as Jodie Holmes,?a young woman who possesses strange, supernatural powers thanks to a?psychic link to an invisible entity.?Cage says the?game will take players on a journey through?15 years of Holmes'?life as it explore themes of?death and the afterlife.?Your decisions will?determine her fate. Very intriguing indeed.

US rejects No Child Left Behind waiver for Calif.

    Jacquelyn Martin / AP file

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan offered states waivers last year, saying No Child Left Behind forced school districts 'into one-size-fits-all solutions that just don't work.'

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

California has become apparently only the second state ? and by far the largest ? to be denied a waiver of requirements of the No Child Left Behind education program, state officials said.

Thirty-four states and the District of Columbia have won waivers from provisions of the 2001 law, one of the signature achievements of the administration of former President George W. Bush, while nine other states and Puerto Rico have received conditional approval or have applications pending, according to the U.S. Education Department.

The agency doesn't publicize which states have been turned down, but Iowa is the only other state to have publicly acknowledged that it has been rejected.

California officials got the news Friday by telephone, The San Jose Mercury News reported, quoting Michael Kirst, president of the state Board of Education.

Kirst told the Mercury News that California's unwillingness to tie teacher evaluations to student test scores was what sank the state's request.

Watch US News videos on NBCNews.com

The denial wasn't a surprise ? Kirst and state school Superintendent Tom Torlakson warned local administrators in an open letter Friday (.pdf) that federal officials had indicated that California's request would be turned down.

    No Child Left Behind

Thirty-four states and the District of Columbia have won waivers from the 2001 No Child Left Behind law. Nine states (in addition to the Puerto Rico) have received conditional approval or have requests pending:
    - Alabama
    - Alaska
    - Hawaii
    - Illinois
    - Maine
    - New Hampshire
    - North Dakota
    - Texas
    - West Virginia

Two states are known to have been rejected:
    -California
    - Iowa

Five states haven't requested waivers or have withdrawn their requests:
    -Montana
    - Nebraska
    - Pennsylvania (plans to request a waiver at a later date)
    - Vermont

"It is disappointing that our state's request ? which enjoyed such strong support from parents, teachers, administrators, and education advocates across California ? has apparently been rejected," Torlakson said in a separate statement.

Authorization for No Child Left Behind ? formal title: the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, or ESEA ? expired in 2007, and Congress hasn't acted to rewrite or refresh it. Last year, the Education Department told the states that they could apply for waivers pending a new law because the current law was "forcing districts into one-size-fits-all solutions that just don't work," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said at the time.

In the meantime, the old law continues to impose student test score standards that keep rising every year, to the point that many states say they're unrealistic in 2012. Critics contend that the law locks states into inflexible standards focused solely on reading and math, neglecting subjects like social studies, the arts, health and physical education.

Majority of states lining up to ditch No Child Left Behind

The old standards require a 100 percent rate of proficiency on standardized reading and math tests by 2014. The penalty for falling short is loss of federal funding for schools serving low-income children.

"On behalf of millions of parents, teachers, administrators and community members who fight for all children every day, we urge you to join us in prioritizing education by coming together to reauthorize and fix No Child Left Behind. We've waited long enough," Betsy Landers, president of the National PTA, wrote in an open letter to President Barack Obama last month.

Torlakson agreed, telling state educators: "The appropriate solution is for Congress to reauthorize the ESEA, replace its inflexible requirements with provisions that accommodate the differences in state policy approaches, and give districts adequate flexibility to improve student achievement."

But that doesn't appear likely to happen any time soon, with Congress transfixed by the looming "fiscal cliff" and immigration reform.

"At the moment, it's unclear if there is a real commitment and consensus in Congress for reauthorizing," Duncan told the Council of Chief State School Officers in a speech last month. "I wish there was a clear commitment and consensus."

Stranded by winter storm? Tips for fliers

NEW YORK (AP) ? A massive winter storm is disrupting travel plans for tens of thousands of fliers trying to get home after Christmas. Snow, thunderstorms, sleet, tornados and high winds have grounded planes in the nation's midsection and are expected to slow operations on the East Coast.

Delays racked up from Dallas to Indianapolis to Chicago. By 3 p.m. EST Wednesday, more than 1,100 flights nationwide had been scrapped, according to flight tracking site FlightAware.com.

More cancelations are likely throughout the evening, with Washington, New York and Philadelphia expected to see the largest problems. For instance, wind gusts at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport could exceed 50 mph Wednesday night, according to FlightAware.

Passengers are pretty much at the mercy of Mother Nature and the airlines. But there are a few things they can do to improve their odds of getting home quickly.

? If you miss your connection, the airlines will automatically rebook you on the next available flight. However, with flights at near capacity, the next open seat could be several days away. Two years ago, some Christmas fliers had to wait nearly a week to get home.

? If you're unhappy with your rebooked flight, get in line to speak to a customer service representative. But also, pick up the phone and call the airline directly, go onto the airline's website and even consider sending a Tweet.

? Consider buying a one-day pass to the airline lounge. It's a nice place to relax away from the crowd and there are usually free drinks and small snacks. But the real secret to the lounges is that the airline staffs them with some of its best ? and friendliest ? ticket agents. The lines inside will be much shorter and these agents are magically able to find empty seats where nobody else can. One-day passes typically cost $50 per person.

    The One-Eyed Man Is King

Man in a tux wearing a monocle. A man of the highest social echelon, as evidenced by his choice of eyewear

    Studio-Annika/iStockphoto.

Eustice Tilley, the dandyish mascot of The New Yorker, telegraphs his estimable class status with a number of chic-yet-dignified sartorial choices, a top hat and topcoat among them. But the accessory that most efficiently communicates Mr. Tilley?s caste is his monocle: a single, bespoke lens secured round his neck by a fine string and held aloft before his discerning eye. By the time Tilley graced The New Yorker?s inaugural cover in 1925, the image of the bemonocled man-about-town had already become a thing of caricature. How did the monocle become a symbol of wealth?

It was a symbol of wealth from the start. The standard monocle is essentially a small magnifying glass without a handle (though early versions generally had one). The monocle can be helpful in reading small print and before the advent of modern refractive-error testing it was thought to be capable of correcting myopia, but sporting one as a general part of one?s attire was always something of a fashionable affectation. Like the lorgnette, spyglass, and, a direct ancestor, the quizzing glass, the monocle basically originated as a faddish accessory of those with the cash and the inclination to purchase such things. It was most popular with the moneyed classes in Europe in the 1820s and ?30s, and experienced a revival in the 1890s.

Though the exact origins of the monocle are unclear, fashion historian Richard Corson sets their general appearance around the turn of the 19th century in Great Britain, with quick adoption and further development in Germany. According to a 1950 article from Optical Journal, from the beginning the single lens carried with it ?an air of conscious elegance,? making it ripe for ridicule: ?[O]ne had the feeling the wearer was being a trifle foolish, an attitude which resulted to some extent from the fact that monocles frequently did not fit and kept dropping out of place.?

Indeed, the impractical design of monocles ensured their status as a luxurious object. In order to avoid muscle strain, the frame of the monocle?which may be made of gold, silver, tortoise shell, and other materials?must be custom-fitted to the wearer?s eye, an expensive proposition. Additional support may come from a ?gallery,? a raised edge that helps keep the lens away from the wearer?s eyelashes and more firmly ensconced in the eye orbit. Due to their sensitivity to gravity, monocles are almost always attached to a chain or string.

The association of monocles with a stereotype of the rich, especially with the rich and pretentious, began at least as early as Charles Dickens? skewering of young Mr. Barnacle?s intractable eyepiece in Little Dorrit, serialized between 1855 and 1857. In America, the image was largely popularized by E.A. Sothern?s portrayal of the silly English nobleman Lord Dundreary in Our American Cousin, first performed in 1858.

Still, there?s traditionally been at least some demand for the eyepiece among the less-moneyed. Mass-produced monocles of inferior quality were available throughout the 1800s and worn by men?and occasionally women?of more modest means. Currently, a monocle in ?whisky tortoise? can be had from the eye-dresser Warby Parker for $50.

Tarantino Heads South in ?Django Unchained? | Triangle Arts and ...

    Django Unchained

After creating his own genre with ?Reservoir Dogs? and ?Pulp Fiction,? Quentin Tarantino has spent the majority of his filmmaking career since making all sorts of genre films that he grew up on, with ?Kill Bill,? ?Death Proof? and ?Inglorious Basterds.? Tarantino is at it again, tackling the spaghetti Western with ?Django Unchained.?

Django (Jamie Foxx) is a quiet, angry man. Separated from his wife after they try to flee the plantation they live on, he?s left walking in shackles towards whatever person wants to purchase him when Dr. King Schultz, a dentist turned bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) frees him. Django?s saving grace is he knows the Brittle brothers, three men Schultz wants to collect the bounty on. In exchange for helping Schultz, Django is taught the tools of the bounty hunter trade, which mainly involves killing people, and together they will rescue Django?s wife from Calvin Candie, a large plantation owner.

As Candie, Leonardo DiCaprio channels all of his charisma into making the character one of the most despicable Tarantino has ever created. The man is rotten to the core. Even his teeth are black. Candie is every bit as charming as Christoph Waltz?s Hans Landa in ?Inglorious Basterds,? but lacks almost all of the viciousness, which is left to his house slave Stephen (a brilliant Samuel L. Jackson). He?s an amazing villain, but Tarantino uses him all wrong. ?Django? itself really slows down once Candie appears, as Schultz and Django go from hunting down people to sitting around tables, negotiating with the man to get Django?s wife back.

Jamie Foxx?s Django is cut from the mold of the classic Western gunslinger, almost too much so. Django is very much a blank slate on his first appearance, and as the film continues he becomes more fleshed out, but there just isn?t much to him except that he wants his wife back.

The real treat is Christoph Waltz, who won an Oscar for his performance in ?Basterds.? Tarantino may have (moreso than Jackson) found his muse, the Robert DeNiro to his Martin Scorcese. Nobody delivers Tarantino?s dialogue with the perfect mix of charm and irony like Waltz. Every film Tarantino has made since ?Kill Bill? has been very aware that its a movie, and Waltz, who is from Austria, has the perfect voice and mannerisms to personify Tarantino?s style.

?Django? has a lot of things going for it, but it?s not one of Tarantino?s finest. It?s definitely one of his bloodiest films, but at 165 minutes, its bloated and loses entirely too much momentum as things go on. Even Candie, the main villain, doesn?t appear until maybe 90 minutes into the film. Not to mention the ridiculously excessive use of the n-word, which is uttered at least 300 times. Tarantino may be trying to be authentic to the time period, but at some point it just becomes too much. In fairness, every Tarantino film I?ve seen since ?Kill Bill? has felt overlong and self-indulgent on the first viewing, so ?Django? may be much better on a second viewing for me.

It?s been fun seeing Quentin Tarantino provide his own spin on classic movie genres and making them his own. With ?Basterds? and ?Django,? it feels like he?s entering a new phase of his career, where he is purely a genre filmmaker. Hopefully he?ll try and do something entirely new and give the world another ?Pulp Fiction,? but that?s probably just wishful thinking on my part.

First Lady Tracks Santa From Hawaii

While President Obama spent his Christmas Eve afternoon golfing with friends, the first lady was hard at work helping children from across the country track Santa's every move.

Mrs. Obama took roughly 30 minutes out of her Hawaiian family vacation to answer calls from children asking where Santa was located as part of the annual NORAD Tracks Santa program run by the North American Aerospace Defense Command, according to a White House official.

"Have you been a good boy this year?" Mrs. Obama asked Fischer from North Carolina.

"Yes, ma'am" responded the polite 5-year-old, who asked Santa to bring him a four-wheeler this year. Klye from Winona, N. J., wanted to know what the first lady's favorite present was when she was a young girl.

"When I was little. I loved Barbie dolls. I was a big Barbie doll kid, and every Christmas I got a new Barbie. One year I got the Barbie townhouse and the camper. It was very exciting," Mrs. Obama said. The first lady helped children track Santa and his sleigh as he delivered toys to little girls and boys in Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

"He's moving pretty fast. That's pretty exciting, isn't it?" she asked the Schaack children from Rocklin, Calif.

"He's going like 100 miles an hour!" one of the boys replied. "You guys go to sleep soon now so that he'll come to your house, all right?" the first lady cautioned.

Get Into Commercial Real Estate With This Advice

It will be easier to find the right commercial property if you have a qualified commercial real estate agent. Read over the tips in this article to get the information you need.

Make sure you can spot a great deal, and act on it in a timely fashion. Real estate pros can recognize a good deal right away. Similarly, professionals learn how to avoid bad deals and are willing to walk away from a deal when it no longer seems like a good deal. A pro will be able to see things that will need to be fixed right away or in the future. They can calculate the risk involved to see if the property is a worthwhile investment for the long run.

Location is vital to commercial real estate. What type of neighborhood is the property in? Look at the growth in similar areas. You need to be reasonably certain that the area will still be decent and growing 10 years from now.

Be sure to first find the right financing. Commercial property loans and the establishments that finance them are not the same as the world of residential home finance. They can actually be better in some ways. While it is often more difficult to get a commercial loan, it becomes more worthwhile when you consider that this route allows you to sidestep personal liability. Furthermore, financial institutions are ultimately able to approve loans in larger amounts.

If you rent out your commercial properties, always remember to keep them occupied. If no one is paying you rent, you?ll be the one footing the bills. If occupancy is low, you may want to see if something is wrong with your property, and if there is, fix it.

Take into consideration any possible environmental problems. A large concern is when you currently own a property that has issues with hazardous waste. Regardless of whether the previous owner did what she was supposed to do, once you buy the property you?re responsible for following hazardous waste and other environmental regulations. You may have to make expensive repairs to resolve an environmental problem.

If you have found the right commercial property for your needs, read the lease in its entirety prior to signing it. Larger companies can sometimes slip extra requirements into lease documents, and this can make them longer and more complicated. Always read any commercial lease before you sign it. Be aware of what you?re agreeing to and don?t sign the lease if anything makes you uncomfortable. Taking the extra time to read through your lease now helps you avoid problems later.

If you want to invest in apartment complexes, you should know that in many cases smaller complexes are harder to maintain than larger ones. Some experts avoid any property that has less than ten apartments. Keep in mind that all situations are distinct; however, doing your homework about a particular possibility should be the final straw in your choosing.

This article contained many real estate tips for buying or selling property. If you apply the information from this article, you will be more prepared to make profitable decisions when buying or selling properties.

Five Businesses You Can Start For Under Rs. 50,000 | The Money ...

Small businesses have always been the backbone of India. Even though there are many perks for working for self, many people are reluctant to start a business because of lack of funds. This of course is true if you are looking at starting a restaurant, or setting up a manufacturing unit where you may require as much as Rs.500,000 in initial investment. However, not all businesses require that much investment. There are many businesses that one can start for less than Rs.50,000, which are clearly not capital intensive but idea intensive.

    portable office

    Portable Office

While looking at starting a business with less money, one needs to look and seek ideas that will depend on business muscle more than financial. You may decide to sell a product or a service. In either case, your biggest expenses are going to be the working space and the salaries you pay to your employees. In most cases, you will also require a laptop, an internet connection, a telephone line and conveyance. You will also have to spend a small amount to register your business. [2] With all this, anyone is all set to start a small business that can even be grown to a multi-million dollar enterprise.

This article explores five ideas for a business you can kick start for less than 50k.

    Become a Consultant

Starting a consulting business is a good option as you are selling your expertise and require little investment. Depending on where your expertise lies, you can start providing consulting services in various areas such as technology, healthcare, accounting and taxation, web design and development, social media, legal, or any other area. Note that starting a consulting business is harder than it actually seems as you require a multitude of skills including the technical expertise, marketing your skills, building a brand, and managing client?s expectations. One of the key?s to becoming a successful consultant is to build a strong network and harvest it to get year-round business.

    Sell your Products

If you are a creative person, and can create an interesting product that people want, then there are many ways to reach the potential buyers. For example, you will find a thriving market-place for hand-made products on websites such as Etsy.com, and Artfire.com. Items on sale include jewelry, clothing, stationery, bags, art, and more. You can sell your stuff on these websites, start your own ecommerce website, and even sell through your personal network. The key is to build your reputation and long-term relationships to get continuing business.

    Start an Event Planning Business

Event planning industry has grown at a rapid pace in the past few years. Depending on the size of the event, an event planner can earn profit margins ranging from 15% to 40% from each event. The services can range from organizing wedding parties, themed birthday celebrations, conferences, training workshops, product launches or any other type of parties. This can be a business option for you if you are a creative person with people skills and the ability to organize things.

    Start an Internet Business

Internet has opened doors for many people to live a dream life of working on their own terms without any time or place constraint. The simplest option is to start a blog on a subject that interests you and provide original and interesting content to your viewers. It requires little technical knowledge and you can start it right from your home. There are many bloggers who are even earning a 6-figure income from their blogs. To earn from your blog, you can place advertising, promote an affiliate product, or even sell your own product. Apart from blogging there are many other options such as starting and nurturing a web-based community, or providing a subscription based online software or service. The best part about an internet business is that you can start really small and then scale up your business quickly with demand. Take for example the company 37Signals that provides an array of online collaboration tools. With a small team of about 15 members, the company turns in millions of dollars using a subscription model for its online software.

    Become a Tutor

If you are academically oriented and have the knack of dealing with children then starting a private tutoring business could be the right choice for you. There is always demand for tutors in subjects such as math and science. As a tutor you can earn anything between Rs. 200 and Rs. 1,000 per hour. There are also online tutoring options such as TutorVista. Some people have also successfully conducted online coaching via Skype.

    Develop Mobile Apps

For a tech savvy person with a flair for programming, the mobile apps development has opened a whole new set of opportunities. If you have a cool idea for a mobile app, you can develop it for different platforms such as iPhone, Android, or Windows. All these platforms provide an active marketplace where you can sell your app for a small fee. For example, on iTunes store you can sell your apps for iPhone and iPad, while Google has its own marketplace for android apps called Google Play. Most apps sell at a small price such as $0.99 or $1.99. If your app is really good, then you can make thousands of sales in no time.

A business under 50K requires a good idea, quality service and perseverance. After the initial effort, the results are bound to be satisfying and will help you be your own driver. It will help you steer your way to self-sustenance and give you better control through the ups and downs of the economy. It makes good business sense to initiate a small business; now you can do it without big money.

I?ve been putting together some thoughts recently on our collective readership.

Not us when we read. Not our delegation here of Unboxed Writers.

And not even the wider community of writers, local and offshore, national and intergalactic, the diaspora-digital, and where it stops, nobody knows. That?s still us. We who read wee bits of each other and say we loved it. That?s just us chickens.

No, I mean the real readership.?The end user.?He who hurls your book across the room.?She who reads fanny fiction and imagines she?s having a literary experience. The reader.

As writers, what do we ask of that reader? Literacy. That?s what we need. We need someone who is literate ? per Merriam-Webster Unabridged:

Characterized or possessed of learning?able to read and write?versed or immersed in literature or creative writing?dealing with literature or belles lettres.

We ask that our customer, our consumer, our windsurfer, come to our creations with a few drachmas in hand. The currency we accept is literacy. The reader must not leave home without it.

But that reader is not expected to be in the business, as we are. We who do the writing. We who build the bridges and the mansions. We who want them to like us, to really, really like us.

The reader, while literate, can expect to be served by us with a greater level of literacy than she or he must attain. This is the unspoken covenant.

If everyone in 16th-century Venice had been Andrea Palladio, then Palladio would be nobody. Instead, that small, exquisite bridge at the foot of Prior Park in Bath, England, means something ? it?s a prized architectural example of Palladian genius, one of only four such bridges left in the world, according to the National Trust.?Prior Park, itself, was designed with the help of the poet Alexander Pope and a then-famous landscape-garden designer called ?Capability? Brown.

Today, we?re the ?Capabilities,? the ones who can bring Palladian order to human nature. We?re the ones who design with words for a living. We?re the experts, the snazzy guys.

So why don?t we use the language correctly for our readers? Why do we have our characters say such things as these?

    • ?I?m going to lay out in the sun?
    • ?The news media is untrustworthy.?
    • ?I may literally eat a horse.?
    • ?I could care less.?
    • ?There are over fourteen of them.?
    • ?That group was comprised of lots of folks.?
    • ?You can read this book for free.?
    • ?None of them are coming with me.?

In your speech and, worse, in your writing, are you using such formulations? If so, do you necessarily agree with what you write? If no, what?s your favorite excuse?

    Excuse #1: It?s conversational

At television news networks, anchors and correspondents complain when corrected by the control room that the wrongly worded phrases they?ve just uttered on-air were ?conversational.?

This is always rubbish. It?s completely possible to speak the language correctly and still be conversational. And here?s how to test this yourself:

Say to the largest gathering of people you can find, ?I?m now going to lie out in the sun.? Then report to me how many of those people rise up and accuse you of being non-conversational because you used the correct form of the verb.

Excuse #2: It?s accepted usage nowadays

By whom? I do not accept ?the media is.?

But let?s say it is accepted, by everybody, even that boorish Porter.

So what? Why not be better than mall-speak?

Let?s get very specific with this one: Why do we need to make a plural word singular? What possible good does this do us? We have the singular form, ready and waiting: medium. And that?s my message. Or massage if the famous McLuhan typo strikes me silly as I write this.

Are you genuinely unable to spare enough mental space and linguistic grace to offer your readers one medium and two media? Are you so poor of intellect and miserly of vocabulary that you can?t summon up the simple distinction between one phenomenon and two phenomena? If a painter doesn?t know his amparo blue from his gentian blue, that painter is a fraud, don?t buy a canvas from him. And if you can?t find it in your heart to distinguish one bacterium from two bacteria, why should anyone pay for your work?

Excuse #3: My characters talk that way

Then your characters are as lazy as you are.

If you?re working in genuine dialect or accent (they are not the same, do you know the difference?), then there may be a reason to utilize some substandard English. But if your reader at any point is unsure that substandard speech was put there deliberately ? if she wonders whether you just didn?t know what you were doing ? then you?ve screwed up.

Excuse #4: The reader doesn?t know the difference

Oh, yes, he does. One of the most compelling things about the readership is that it tends to be peopled by folks who are surprisingly good at the tools of our trade. Sometimes I think this is because they don?t write: these lessons in school were harder for them to grasp, thus they retain more vivid memories of them than we do.

Liz Bureman recently wrote a bit of guidance titled Stop Saying ?Literally.??She led with a few lines about Rob Lowe?s character in the NBC show Parks and Recreation, no relation whatever to Prior Park. Lowe?s character misuses ?literally? in the popular way, using it as a general intensifier. He means ?figuratively.? This is a running gag on the show, set up with ridiculous clarity by the way Lowe delivers it. The audience-at-large knows it?s wrong. They?re laughing at him, not with him.

Your readers know you?re wrong. They?re not laughing with you.

Excuse #5: Language is supposed to serve us, not hobble us

Great. So why have your work edited? It?s just language. Let?s throw out all the rules every one of them and maybe in fact I won?t even use periods or commas or any other punctuation to divide this drivel I?m writing into sentences I might just keep going with it like this for as long as I damned well please because the language serves me sweet cheeks and whatever I need it to do is more important than some old maid?s rules and regulations from the 1920s when they still had time to sit around and make up inane grammar laws that now are like OMG just too much trouble you know to fool with

Excuse #6: I don?t know the language well enough

Ah. Thank you. And that?s not an excuse, that?s a reason, a very valid and respectable one as soon as you admit it.?If you?re not sure you can tell correct usage from the Bieber-fed babble of the moment ? and if you?re willing to learn ? then you?re the one kind of badly spoken writer I like.

There are books. There are podcasts. There are courses. There are tutors. There are many ways to get the training you need to handle this essential aspect of being an authentic writer. If you?re sincere about writing, this is a step you can?t skip. I?m using the term ?essential? deliberately, as in indispensable.

We don?t necessarily agree with ourselves

I believe that one of the reasons we?re seeing so much badly written material these days is that honesty is not considered agreeable. So we don?t say, ?You know, you?ve got five gaffes in that first chapter, my friend, you may need to get some more eyes on that thing.? Instead, we say, ?It?s the best thing I?ve ever read.?

Have you noticed how rarely the term ?talent? comes up when we discuss writing? It?s not considered nice to talk about talent, ?Capability.? Same as intelligence. Someone who doesn?t have as much talent or intelligence might be hurt, right? We act as if everybody?s at the same level, although we know they aren?t.

Look, I want you to forget that stuff your mother taught you about ?If you can?t say anything nice?? Chances are your mother wasn?t in the business, either, and it was fine for her to speak as if she were a fad on legs.

We need to honor each other with truthful exchanges of corrective information. It?s possible to be both forthright and supportive, truthful and kind, firm and gentle.

Such collegial friendship exists only among those who are working to be the real things. To build bridges, raise villas, design piazzas that will make people, 500 years later, say our names, Palladio, and admire our ?Capability.? Our work won?t be revered because we used language as if we were skateboarders.

So happy holidays, and you tell me: Why don?t we have more emphasis these days on writing the language well? Have you found yourself over time accepting less rigorous standards ? either in your own writing or others? ? than you?d have agreed to before?
