Chemists Outrun Laws in War on Synthetic Drugs
Synthetic mimics of marijuana, dissociative drugs and stimulants -- such as the "bath salts" allegedly consumed by Randy Eugene, the Florida man shot after a horrific face-eating assault -- are growing in popularity and hard to control. Every time a compound is banned, overseas chemists synthesize a new version tweaked just enough to evade a law's letter.

Methane on Mars is not an indication of life: UV radiation releases methane from organic materials from meteorites

ScienceDaily (May 31, 2012) ? It was a sensation when scientists discovered methane in Mars' atmosphere nine years ago. Many saw the presence of the gas as a clear indication of life on the inhospitable planet, as on Earth methane is produced predominantly by biological processes. Others assumed geological processes, such as volcanoes, to be the cause. What has been missing until now is proof of where the methane actually comes from, however.

Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz and the universities in Utrecht and Edinburgh have now been able to show that methane escapes from a meteorite if it is irradiated with ultraviolet light under Martian conditions. Since meteorites and interplanetary dust from space, which carry along carbonaceous compounds, continuously impact on the Martian surface, the researchers conclude that high-energy UV radiation triggers the release of methane from the meteorites.

Since scientists identified larger quantities of methane in the Martian atmosphere in 2003, there has been much speculation about its source. The best-known hypothesis states that microorganisms produce the methane, and is thus an indication of life on the red planet. Another hypothesis assumes the source to be geological methane sources in Mars' interior. To date, none of the theories has been able to conclusively explain the large quantity of 200 to 300 tonnes of methane annually which are produced on Mars, according to projections.

Without an expedition to Mars and with nothing more than a meteorite to help them, researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz and the universities in Utrecht and Edinburgh have now found a major source. "Methane is produced from innumerable, small micro-meteorites and interplanetary dust particles that land on the Martian surface from space," explains Frank Keppler, lead author of the study now published in the research journal Nature. "The energy is provided by the extremely intense ultraviolet radiation," adds the atmospheric chemist.

UV light decomposes carbon compounds in meteoritic matter

Unlike Earth, Mars has no protective ozone layer which could absorb most of the UV radiation from space. Moreover, the Martian atmosphere is very thin, so that a significantly smaller portion of the meteoritic material burns up in the atmosphere compared to Earth.

Together with colleagues from Great Britain and the Netherlands, the researchers from Mainz irradiated samples of the Murchison meteorite with ultraviolet light. "The meteorite contains several percent carbon and has a similar chemical composition to most of the meteoritic matter that lands on Mars," says the cosmochemist Ulrich Ott. The 4.6 billion-year-old meteorite fell to Earth in 1969 in the Australian town of Murchison. The researchers selected conditions identical to those on Mars for the UV irradiation, which caused considerable quantities of methane to escape from the meteorite almost immediately. Their conclusion: carbonaceous compounds in the meteoritic matter are decomposed by the high-energy UV radiation, and methane molecules are formed in the process.

The methane production from meteorites depends on temperature

Since the temperature on the red planet varies from minus 143 degrees Celsius at the poles to plus 17 degrees Celsius at Mars' equator, the scientists also investigated the meteoritic samples at appropriate temperatures. The warmer it became, the more methane was released by the meteoritic fragments. This temperature dependence also agrees with the different methane concentrations at different locations in the Martian atmosphere. In infrared spectra, the largest concentration of methane was found in the equatorial region, the warmest place on Mars, relatively speaking.

The results obtained by Frank Keppler's team should bring "down to earth" all those who firmly believe in the biological origin of the methane. The researchers cannot fully exclude the hypothesis of Martian microbes, however, because, although the process found here is inevitable, it is quite possible that further processes contribute to methane production. The researchers hope that Curiosity, the Mars Rover that NASA expects to land on our neighbouring planet at the beginning of August, will provide more details on the formation of methane, and maybe even final clarification as to whether there is life on Mars.

An $800M Buddy Media Acquisition Would Be Worth 8X Its Current Revenue

buddy media logoSalesforce.com may be close to acquiring?Buddy Media?in the largest social media marketing acquisition to date, according to sources close to the company.?AllThingsD reported earlier today?that Salesforce is getting close to a deal for more than $800 million, and we'd heard acquisition rumors earlier this week too, though Buddy Media declined to comment. Now our sources say the price may be considerably higher depending on the equity component of the deal. That may put it more in the neighborhood of $1 billion. If the acquisition happens in that price range, the deal would would be an impressive multiple given Buddy's current revenue run rate.?As of last year, Buddy was projecting a run rate of $100 million for 2012 and $180 million for 2013, we hear. That's a much more generous multiple than the 3x one that Vitrue got in its $300 million acquisition by Oracle.

Forget 'Men in Black 3': Why aliens won't attack Earth

SETI hunter Jill Tarter says Sir Stephen Hawking is wrong about aliens coming to attack or colonize Earth.? If aliens can get here, Tarter reasons, they'll be advanced enough not to need slaves, food or other planets,

Despite what the movies tell us, any aliens that visit Earth probably won't want to enslave or vaporize us, veteran E.T. hunter Jill Tarter says.

Hostile aliens abound at the multiplex these days, terrorizing our planet in films such as "Battleship" and "Men in Black 3." But science fiction is probably far from reality in its depiction of Earth-contacting extraterrestrials, said Tarter, who announced Monday (May 22) that she's retiring after spending 35 years scanning the heavens for signals from intelligent life beyond Earth.

"If aliens were able to visit Earth, that would mean they would have technological capabilities sophisticated enough not to need slaves, food or other planets," Tarter, who is stepping down as director of the Center for SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif., said in a statement.

RECOMMENDED: Are you scientifically literate? Take the quiz.

Tarter's confidence in aliens' benign intentions puts her at odds with famed British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, who has warned that extraterrestrial civilzations may venture our way to strip-mine our planet for resources.

"While Sir Stephen Hawking warned that alien life might try to conquer or colonize Earth, I respectfully disagree," Tarter said. "If aliens were to come here, it would be simply to explore. Considering the age of the universe, we probably wouldn?t be their first extraterrestrial encounter, either."

Tarter, other scientists and a variety of artists and entertainers will gather next month in Santa Clara, Calif., to discuss such issues in depth. SETICon II, held June 22-24, will explore humanity's place in the universe and the future of the search for life beyond Earth, conference organizers said.

While Tarter, 68, is retiring from her long-held research role at the SETI Institute, she will continue to devote herself to the search for E.T. She'll fund-raise full-time for the Institute, which had to shut down its alien-hunting Allen Telescope Array for seven months last year because of a budget shortfall.

SPACE.com recently caught up with Tarter to discuss the reasons for her career change, how the SETI effort has changed since she started out in the 1970s and what it would mean to finally pluck an alien signal out of the air.

SPACE.com:?Why did you decide to retire as director of the Center for SETI Research, and switch over to fundraising full-time?

Tarter: Because last year, with the hibernation of the [Allen Telescope] Array, that entire event ? it was just eye-opening. That was a wakeup call. Funding is so precarious that we've just got to get the job done, and get stable funding into the house to do SETI research.

We have a new partner ? we got that deal done, so we can operate the Array. But now we've got to provide funding for people to actually use it and do clever things, and do research, and look in new ways. So I can't put it off any longer. It's really critical.

Technologies Involved in Business Telephone Systems - The Infofile ...

The size and the specific requirements of your business are determining factors when you are choosing a commercial telephone system. The features of these telephone systems ensure easy and effective communication within the different individuals, teams and departments of the company as well as with others outside the company.

In such a situation, you need to have an idea about the different telephone systems for business and the way they operate. The technology behind each system plays a significant role in the features it offers and the charges it incurs. This helps in determining which would be appropriate for your business.

The Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) System: This is essentially a telephone system based on the Internet. If you have a small office with only a few employees, this could be the right system for communications. The system offers a few lines of communication and basic voice mailboxes.

The system requires that you have the necessary computer network bandwidth for calling. Moreover, the system also requires specialised equipment for calling, and therefore, is a suitable solution only if you are using it for a limited number of users. You may be able to use regular telephone equipment with the right adapters.

The Key System: This is a good choice if your business employs 20-30 individuals. This offers basic features for communication. However, this system is quite inexpensive, making it an ideal small business telephone system. This is the reason it is the common phone system used by small businesses.

If all you want is to ensure ease of communication between the employees working in your office, this is the right option for you. Internal extensions and essential features are available with this system. The chances of customisation are minimal in this business telephone system.

The PBX System: This is a suitable choice if you need a phone system that can cater to a large business. The system uses onsite switching equipment for call routing between internal and external lines. Even if you have few employees presently, it is better to opt for this system if you plan to expand your business and employ more people soon.

This business telephone system offers numerous features for a business, including auto-attendant, auto dialling, call forwarding, conference calling, call waiting, and call transferring. Moreover, you can also integrate the system with internal extensions, fax machines and modems.

How do you know which phone system would be right for your business? If you operate a small business with 4-5 employees, a VoIP phone system may be suitable for your company. However, if you are planning to employ more people soon, this would not be a good option, as any addition to the system would imply higher costs.

The PBX system would be ideal if you have more than 35 employees and are planning to appoint more. This would also be necessary if your business requires sophisticated communication features. You may opt for virtual PBX system where this is layered on to your existing telephone system to provide your business with the necessary features,

NYC examines sanitation records in search for Patz remains

Garbage disposal records from 1979 may help investigators find the remains of Etan Patz. WNBC's Gus Rosendale reports.

By NBCNewYork.com

Investigators are trying to determine whether they can track the remains of 6-year-old Etan Patz now that a suspect has made claims about where he tossed the boy's body in Manhattan in 1979.

Police contacted sanitation officials last week, when Pedro Hernandez was arrested, asking if the department has records dating back that far showing which trucks might have collected trash from buildings in the area, the Department of Sanitation told NBC 4 New York on Monday.?Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Hernandez has told police that he put the boy's body in a trash bag and left it in an alley a few blocks from the SoHo bodega where he claimed to have strangled the boy.

It was the first day?Patz had ever been allowed to walk alone to the school bus stop. He never made it, and his disappearance mystified the city for decades.

Sanitation spokesman?Vito Turso told NBC?4 New York that the city does have handwritten log books about which trucks picked up trash in certain locations, and records of where those loads were dumped.

Turso said if city trucks collected the bag with Patz's body, it could have been taken by barge to the former Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island. It also could have been transported to an incinerator that used to burn trash near Gansevoort Street on the west side of Manhattan.

Turso said there was also the possibility that the bag would have been collected as commercial refuse by a private hauler. In that case, NYPD would have to identify the store and trace the hauler. That trash, Turso said, could have gone to Fresh Kills, the former Fountain?Avenue landfill in Brooklyn, or some other private landfill.

"We await further word from?NYPD,"?Turso said.

The Department of Sanitation also has records that show where in its landfills trash was dumped, by date and location. That could help narrow a potential dig for remains, if police decided to pursue one.

Previously on this story: Suspect on suicide watch

Hernandez, 51, was a stock clerk at the bodega at the time the boy disappeared. Police said he told them he lured Patz to the store with the promise of a soda, and then killed him in the basement.

He was charged Friday with second-degree murder and has not entered a plea.

His lawyer, Harvey Fishbein, told the court that Hernandez is a schizophrenic and has had both auditory and visual hallucinations. He has requested a hearing to determine his client's mental fitness.

Redding CA-I have an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) that's about ...

What is Home Affordable Refinance Program ?

HARP is designed specifically to help home owners who may not be eligible for traditional refinancing programs due to loss of real estate value or because they have no equity.

HARP is like traditional refinancing programs in that the home owner will receive a completely new mortgage and payment and the last home loan will be wiped out.

The new loan should reduce your monthly payment and help relieve some financial stress.

If you and the real estate qualify to refinance the mortgage through the HARP, you?ll go through an application, approval and closing process. The same as you went thru when you first purchase the home.

If refinancing is not an option, we can discuss some other options such as deed in lieu of foreclosure or selling the home short.

If your home in Redding CA values have decreased and you are wondering what your options are??

Home Improvement Guidelines That Are Easy To Understand | i ...

It costs a lot of money to replace your flooring with carpet, wood, or tile. Instead, consider removing the current flooring material and applying a stain to the concrete underneath. The stain makes the concrete have a new industrial look that can match any decor.

More than ever, people are discovering hidden dangers associated with home improvement. Do not purchase drywall (also known as wall board or sheet rock) that was made in China. China exports a great abundance of drywall to the US and has been since 2005. The quality control used in manufacturing this drywall leaves much to be desired. In other cases, Chinese drywall has harmful gases that could corrode with the wires you have inside the walls.

If you install carpeting in am area that is high in traffic, it is pointless. It won?t take long at all before the carpet is ruined. All it takes is a few people tracking their mud across it to ruin it for good. The lifespan of carpet in these areas is much shorter, too. Instead of carpet, look into dirt resistant materials like linoleum or tile.

If you are bored with your home or find yourself running out of space, consider a renovation before simply deciding to move. Home renovations give you the freedom to mold your home into exactly what you want. Renovations are also much more affordable than purchasing a new property altogether.

Before undertaking any home improvement project that involves electricity, either to or from the project, cut the power to the affected areas. Failing to do this may kill you.

The porch is an area that you should not overlook when improving your home. Visitors? eyes are immediately drawn to this area. Add some potted plants and put fresh paint up. You may even see your home value rise more than the amount you spent on the improvement. Even the smallest changes can have a big impact.

If you are doing the projects by yourself make sure you have the correct tools and high quality supplies. This investment will pay dividends in the long run and is well worth the expenditure. If you purchase high quality products, they will wear better and last longer. It?s not desirable to replace expensive tools frequently.

To help you identify the contents of containers, hot glue a sample of the enclosed items to the containers. It can be difficult to find what you are looking for in even the most organized tool shops. Written labels do not provide the instant visual cue that this method does.

Fixtures and other materials used for home projects around be high quality. Why is this? Simple?homeowners take their furniture and decorative accents with them when they move. Upgrading the fixtures and finishes in your home will increase the final selling price.

Think about installing windows that are thermally sealed, as they are attractive and cheap. Projects like this can be very rewarding for people who do them.

What?s sad is that all of these horror stories do not need to be told. If people would just follow some simple advice, they could avoid the letdowns. Research and knowledge is what?s important here. Since reading this article, you can make any home repair successfully if you use the included advice.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park in New Mexico plans vigil, flag march for Memorial Day weekend

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Victor ?Doc? Westphall created the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Angel Fire, N.M., after his eldest son, David Westphall, was killed in Vietnam in 1968.

He dedicated his life to building and maintaining the memorial, which is now a state park.

In February of 2003, as the United States prepared for war with Iraq, I interviewed Doc Westphall by phone about his work and its larger meaning.

Just this month, I detoured off I-25 south heading for Santa Fe to visit the memorial (about four hours south of Denver). It?s a strange-feeling place ? ?70s architecture and a Huey helicopter perched high on a hill in northern New Mexico.

The New Mexico National Guard placed the Huey "Viking Surprise" at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park in 1999.

I wandered the grounds, Memorial Day-ready with hundreds of American flags, and learned that Doc Westphall died on July 22, 2003, just months after our interview. The clouds gathered in the west as tears collected in my eyes.

Here?s what Doc Westphall told me in 2003:

I was in Borneo during World War II when the cessation of hostilities with Japan was declared. I saw an American soldier and a Japanese POW bouncing along in an American jeep like they were buddies, and I thought, why was war necessary if only a half-day after the announcement they should be friends?

I saw the stark reality and futility of it all. I can see that image today as clear as if it were yesterday.

After the war, I went to college on the GI bill and got a Ph.D. in history, and started a construction business that built 2,000 houses in Albuquerque. For some unknown reason I decided to buy the Valverde ranch in 1966.

The death of our son in Vietnam triggered the memorial, but the fundamental reason was the futility of war. I knew from the beginning that it was destined to be unusual in some way. In World War II veterans came home to admiration and adulation, but Vietnam veterans came home to feelings of hatred and apathy.

It?s a very interesting place to be because it?s literally a cross section of the world right here. Frequently (visitors) are reluctant to even enter the memorial. A fellow who came from back East got to the front gate, turned around and went home. He came back, nearly turned back again, and finally said, ?This is nonsense,? and he came on in.

The memorial has occupied my life for three decades. It?s the central feature of my life. I?m 89, and I?m too busy to die. The memorial has 1,500 photos of deceased vets with a biography of each, and I write them all.

The grief of losing a child is just as strong as ever. It never goes away. It diminishes at times, but it?s always lurking in the background.

More blood has been shed in the name of religion than any other factor. If we?re ever going to eliminate war, we can?t say, ?You take care of it and send us the bill.? The important thing is to not wait until war is upon us, but to conduct the affairs of the world so they are taken care of in advance.

In the final analysis, it is man?s responsibility. He can?t shove it off onto God or anyone else.

You can make heaven right here on Earth.

Dozens of children killed in new Syria attack

BEIRUT (AP) ? Gruesome video Saturday showed rows of dead Syrian children lying in a mosque in bloody shorts and T-shirts with gaping head wounds, haunting images of what activists called one of the deadliest regime attacks yet in Syria's 14-month-old uprising.

The assault on Houla, a group of villages northwest of the central city of Homs, killed more than 90 people, including at least 32 children under the age of 10, the head of the U.N. observer team in Syria said.

The attacks sparked outrage among international leaders and anti-regime groups and large protests in Syria, including the suburbs of the capital of Damascus and its largest city, Aleppo. It also renewed fears of the relevance of a month-old international peace plan that has not stopped almost daily violence.

More than a dozen amateur videos posted online Saturday gave glimpses of the carnage, showing lines of bodies laid out in simple rooms, many with bloody faces, torsos and limbs. In some places, residents put hunks of ice on the bodies to preserve them until burial.

One two-minute video shows at least a dozen children lined up shoulder to shoulder on a checkered blanket on what appears to be the floor of a mosque. Blood trickled from one girl's mouth. One boy, appearing to be no more than 8, had his jaw blown off. The video shows flowered blankets and rugs covering several rows of other bodies.

Another video posted Saturday showed a mass grave, four bodies wide and dozens of meters (yards) long.

Activists from Houla said Saturday that regime forces peppered the area with mortars after large demonstrations against the regime of President Bashar Assad the day before. That evening, they said, pro-regime fighters known as shabiha stormed the villages, gunning down men in the streets and stabbing women and children in their homes.

A local activist reached via Skype said regime forces fired shells at Houla, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Homs. The shabiha entered the villages, raiding homes and shooting at civilians, Abu Yazan said. More than 100 people were killed, more than 40 of them children and most of them in the village of Taldaw, he said. Many had stab wounds, another activist said.

"They killed entire families, from parents on down to children, but they focused on the children," Yazan said.

The Syrian government blamed the killings on "armed terrorist groups" ? a term it often uses for the opposition ? but provided no details or death toll.

U.N. observers, among more than 250 who were dispatched in recent weeks to salvage the cease-fire plan, visited the site of the killings Saturday, finding spent artillery tank shells. The head of the team. Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, called the attack a "brutal tragedy."

"Whoever started, whoever responded, and whoever carried out this deplorable act of violence, should be held responsible," Mood said.

The attack is yet another blow to the international peace plan brokered by envoy Kofi Annan and cast a pall over his coming visit to check on the plan's progress. The cease-fire between forces loyal to the regime of Assad and rebels seeking to topple it was supposed to start on April 12 but has never really taken hold, with new killings every day.

The U.N. put the death toll weeks ago at more than 9,000. Hundreds have been killed since.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Friday that there has only been "small progress" on implementing the peace plan and blamed the Syrian government for much of the "unacceptable levels of violence and abuses." Annan is supposed to visit Syria soon to check on the plan's progress.

The grisly images were condemned by anti-regime groups and political leaders around the world.

"With these new crimes, this murderous regime pushes Syria further into horror and threatens regional stability," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in a statement Saturday.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights released an unusually harsh statement, saying Arab nations and the international community were "partners" in the killing "because of their silence about the massacres that the Syrian regime has committed."

The Houla villages are Sunni Muslim. The forces came from an arc of nearby villages populated by Alawites, members of the offshoot of Shiite Islam to which Assad belongs, the activists said.

The activists said the Houla killings appeared to be sectarian between the two groups, raising fears that Syria's uprising, which started in March 2011 with protests calling for political reform, is edging closer to the type of war that tore apart Syria's eastern neighbor, Iraq.

"I don't like to talk about sectarianism, but it was clear that this was sectarian hatred," said activist Abu Walid.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 96 people were killed, 26 of them children and four of them army defectors.

The group's head, Rami Abdul-Rahman, who relies on activists inside Syria, said all were killed in shelling, but that no forces entered Houla.

Syrian state TV condemned the opposition groups for the "massacre" in a statement Saturday.

"The armed groups are escalating their massacres against the Syrian people only days before international envoy Kofi Annan's visit in a bid to defeat his plan and a political solution to the crisis and with the aim of exploiting the blood of Syrians in the media bazar," it said.

The videos could not be independently verified. The Syrian government bars most media from operating inside the country.

The harsh condemnation from anti-regime groups reflects their growing frustration with international reluctance to intervene in Syria's conflict.

World powers have fallen in behind the U.N. plan. The U.S. and European nations say they will not intervene militarily, and while Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Libya have said they will arm Syria's rebels, no country is known to be doing so.

A spokeswoman for the opposition Syrian National Council called on the U.N. Security Council "to examine the situation in Houla and to determine the responsibility of the United Nations in the face of such mass killings, expulsions and forced migration from entire neighborhoods."

Also Saturday, the story of 11 Lebanese Shiites who were reported kidnapped in Syria this week took another strange turn.

Lebanese officials first said their expected arrival on a plane from Turkey to Lebanon late Friday was delayed for "logistical reasons."

On Saturday, Turkey's Foreign Ministry denied the men were in Turkey ? raising new questions about their fate.

Lebanese and Syrian officials blamed Syrian rebels for Tuesday's kidnapping. No group has claimed responsibility.

(AP) ? Egypt's wide-open presidential election, which was in its second day of voting Thursday, is showing how deeply polarized the nation has become, with backers of rival Islamists and former regime figures each vowing they cannot let the other rule.

The impact of their rivalry goes beyond the key question of who gets to rule Egypt for the next four years.

An Islamist president will mean a more religious government, while many fear a figure from Hosni Mubarak's ousted regime occupying the land's highest office would keep Egypt locked in dictatorship and thwart democracy.

The two candidates that inspire the most polarized opinions are Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's largest political group, and Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force commander and Mubarak's last prime minister, who was booted out of office by street protests several weeks after his former boss.

In the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, the mother of a young businessman who was beaten to death by policemen in 2010 warned of a "second revolution" if one of the "feloul" ? a member of the Mubarak regime, like Shafiq ? is elected. The killing of her son, Khaled Said, helped ignite the uprising against Mubarak last year.

"I don't feel that my son has received justice," Said's mother, Laila Marzouk, said Thursday after she voted for Hamdeen Sabahi, a leftist candidate who is a favorite among revolutionaries. "If one of the feloul of Mubarak's regime wins, another revolution will start and I'll be among the first to take part."

Beside Shafiq, the only other Mubarak regime figure running is Amr Moussa, who served as foreign minister for 10 years before he became the Arab League chief in 2001.

Resentment of the old regime and its symbols runs deep in some of Cairo's poor neighborhoods.

In the Dar el-Salam district, piles of festering trash sit outside polling centers and residents complain that their life has taken a turn for the worse after last year's uprising because some of the basic services, like trash collection and traffic policing, have disappeared ? some suspect deliberately.

"The municipality is not functioning, trash collectors are not working and there are no traffic policemen out on the streets," said Ahmed Abdo, a 51-year old minibus driver.

"The old regime is still here and is fighting back ... they want us to regret that we revolted."

His friend Ismail Eid, 43, agreed. "So long as the new president is backed by the poor, we will be his protectors. We will crush whoever tries to get in his way."

Both Shafiq and Morsi have repeatedly spoken of the dangers, real or imaginary, of the other becoming president. Morsi has said there would be massive street protests if a "feloul" wins the vote. They can only win if an election is rigged, he warned.

Shafiq, on his part, has said it would be "unacceptable" if an Islamist takes the presidential office, echoing the rhetoric of Mubarak, his longtime mentor who devoted much of his 29-year rule to fighting Islamists. Still, Shafiq's campaign has said it would accept the election's result.

While a Shafiq victory could spark protests, the deeper problem is whether Egypt's multiple power centers will be able to work together no matter who wins. Egyptians are eager for the new leader to rebuild the nation, wracked by more than a year of unrest, crime and a faltering economy.

A major issue is how a president will get along with the Islamist-dominated parliament, where the Brotherhood alone holds nearly half the seats and ultraconservatives known as Salafist have another 20 percent.

Also looming is the writing of a new constitution, already the source of contention. The Brotherhood and Islamists tried to control the panel tasked with writing the charter, sparking a backlash that led to the dissolving of the panel by a court ruling.

There is also the question of the powers that should be retained by the military after a president is elected. Many are concerned that the generals who took power after Mubarak's fall on Feb. 11, 2011, will try to retain influence.

Reform leader Mohamed ElBaradei said the choice of president is less important than establishing national unity.

That goal can only be achieved after Egypt's poor are fed, employed and have roofs over their heads, ElBaradei, the former head of the U.N. nuclear agency, told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday in Vienna.

"I think the most crucial factor is to get Egyptians to understand that they need to agree on the basic common values that they're going to live under for the future," he said.

The two-day election, which ends Thursday, is not expected to produce an outright winner among the 13 candidates vying for the post. If no one gets at least 50 percent of the vote, the top two finishers will go to a runoff June 16-17. The winner will be announced June 21.

To encourage a bigger turnout, the government has given the days off to workers and extended voting by one hour, to 9 p.m.

The generals who took control after Mubarak was ousted have promised to hand over power by July 1, repeatedly assuring critics that they have no wish to remain in charge. There are fears, however, that they could retain significant powers on matters of national security and key foreign policies and perpetuate the hated old regime's system of cronyism.

"I like the personality of Shafiq. He is strong enough to lift the country," said Suheir Abdel-Moamen, one of several women standing in line waiting to vote in the middle class Cairo district of el-Zawiya al-Hamra. Somaiya Imam, still undecided on whom to choose, replied with a reference to Islamist candidates, saying: "Don't you think we should vote for the candidate who holds the Quran?"

"We voted for them before and they let us down," Abdel-Moneim responded, referring to the Brotherhood's victories in last year's parliamentary elections. "They want everything ? the presidency, parliament and government. They are never satisfied."

A woman standing behind the two chipped in: "But he (Shafiq) is a Mubarak's associate."

Sabahi, who adopts the socialist ideas of Egypt's late leader Gamal Abdel-Nasser, has been the choice of many who neither want an Islamist or a Mubarak-era figure for president. Others have turned to Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, who is an Islamist but is seen by some liberals as moderate enough.

Shafiq has been openly disparaging of the pro-democracy youth groups who led the 18-day uprising that forced Mubarak out of office on Feb. 11, 2011. Critics accuse him of being too cozy with the ruling generals, whose own reputation is tainted by human rights abuses and authoritarian tendencies.

But with his strongman image, he has appealed to Egyptians who crave stability and fear Islamists.

Shafiq was met by several dozen protesters screaming "down with the feloul" as he arrived to vote in an upscale neighborhood east of Cairo on Wednesday afternoon. Some protesters showed their contempt by holding up their shoes in his direction. On his way out, some mobbed him, swinging their shoes at him as his security hustled him into his car.

BlueStacks beta-1 [Android App Review]

Angry Birds Space via BlueStacks beta-1

BlueStacks has been around for a while. We first saw it in an early alpha, that while usable, wasn't ready for prime time. After lots of toiling and hard work (I assume), we finally saw BlueStacks enter beta, and boy, was this ever a different program.

So what exactly does BlueStacks let you do? It lets you run Android applications right on your PC, just as though you were using an Android phone or tablet. It manages to pull this off using some sort of black voodoo neckbeard magic? "Layercake" technology the guys have developed, and man oh man, do I like it.

Getting BlueStacks going is simply a breeze. Once you've got it all installed, you simply open it up and there's a list of preinstalled apps. You have access to a couple of different app stores to download other apps you might want, and to top it all off, you can install apk's directly into BlueStacks, right off of your computer's hard drive.

(There's also an app syncing tool that lets you sync apps from your phone to your computer's client, which skirts the whole apk issue, but just know that it's there if you need it.)

When you've finally got an app loaded up in BlueStacks, there's always a bit of experimenting to see what button or mouse click controls what. For something like Angry Birds Space, it's all pretty straightforward; use your mouse like you'd use your finger.

For something more complex (and visually demanding) like Shadowgun, you've just got to mess around. For the most part, mouse clicks transfer pretty well, and more often than not, arrow keys will move your character. The few times I ran Shadowgun, it was either kind of stuttery or buttery smooth, so your mileage can definitely vary.

Overall, BlueStacks is pretty darn cool, especially if you've ever wanted to get the Android experience on your computer. Its uses might seem a bit novel right now, but as prices for games in the mobile space continue to come in lower than their desktop counterparts, BlueStacks looks like it could offer some market disruption.

You can download the BlueStacks Windows component from the BlueStacks website at no cost. We've got video after the break.

Newly modified nanoparticle opens window on future gene editing technologies

ScienceDaily (May 24, 2012) ? The scientific and technological literature is abuzz with nanotechnology and its manufacturing and medical applications. But it is in an area with a less glitzy aura-plant sciences-where nanotechnology advancements are contributing dramatically to agriculture.

Researchers at Iowa State University have now demonstrated the ability to deliver proteins and DNA into plant cells, simultaneously. This is important because it now opens up opportunities for more sophisticated and targeted plant genome editing-techniques that require the precise delivery of both protein and DNA to bring about specific gene modifications in crop plants. Such modifications are becoming more and more important in the face of our changing climates as new insect pests, plant diseases and soil stresses emerge where previously there were few.

While DNA delivery into cells has become routine, delivering proteins and enzymes to both animal and plant cells has proved more challenging. The Iowa State team's protein delivery advancement is an important achievement toward this end.

A research paper describing the advancement has been published online by the journal Advanced Functional Materials. The work was partially sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred with long-term support from Iowa State University's Plant Sciences Institute.

The Iowa State research team includes Kan Wang, professor of agronomy; Brian Trewyn, associate scientist in chemistry; Susana Martin-Ortigosa, a post-doctoral research associate in agronomy; and Justin Valenstein, a chemistry doctoral student.

Nanoparticles are tiny materials that are the size equivalent of several molecules sitting side-by-side or the size of a big virus. A single nanometer is one-billionth of a meter. The virus that causes AIDS is roughly 100 nanometers in diameter.

Using new and improved custom-built honeycomb-like mesoporous silica nanoparticles that the Iowa State team designed five years ago, the researchers have demonstrated co-delivery of functional protein and DNA into plant cells.

The first generation of these customized particles were relatively small (100 nanometers) and so the available packing spaces were unable to accommodate larger functional molecules such as proteins or enzymes. This next generation is five times the size (500 nanometers) and looks something like an ultra-fine piece of Honeycomb cereal.

The key to the researchers' success is a newly devised method for making larger uniform pouches in the custom nanoparticles. An additional modification-gold plating the entire silica particle prior to packing-improved DNA and protein binding for a more secure payload.

To test the new particle's effectiveness, Wang and her colleagues loaded the pores with a green florescent protein derived from jelly fish, which serves as a photo marker inside the plant cell. Next, these particles were coated with DNA encoding a red protein from coral. The complex was then shot into plant cells using a gene gun, a traditional gene delivery method that gets foreign material past the plant's protective cell wall.

The gold plating innovation added some greatly needed ballistic heft to the particles, ensuring their ability to cannonball through the plant cell wall once released from the gene gun.

Cells that fluoresce both red and green at the same time confirm successful delivery. The team has demonstrated success in onion, tobacco and maize cells.

The work is a tangible realization of efforts the team had in the design stage just two years ago when colleague Victor Lin of Iowa State University and the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory unexpectedly died. "He was such a brilliant scientist," says Wang. "We all felt completely lost when we lost him."

But the team pulled together, capitalizing on the excellent training all had received from working with Lin to make this next generation particle a reality.

"We would have been unable to work out anything without each other," says Wang. "This success proves his legacy continues."
