Claes Johnson on Mathematics and Science: Why My Book is ...

My ebook BodyandSoul Mathematical Simulation Technology (MST)?is banned by KTH: No link to the book is allowed on any website controled by KTH.

If you want to know why KTH exercises this oppression of free speech, the most holy principle of both science and democracy, you will find the answer in the following TED talk by Conrad Wolfram:

What Wolfram says is precisely what MST says:?

  • We've got a real problem with math education today.
  • I believe that computers correctly used is the silver bullet that can make math education work.
  • Computer-based math: Critical reform.
  • The country that does it first will leap-frog others.
  • This is not an incremental sort of change.
  • I want to see a completely renewed changed math curriculum built form the ground up based on computers...
  • I am not even sure we should brand the subject as math.
  • What I am sure is that it is the main-stream subject of the future.

Man City comes from behind to beat Fulham 2-1

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:21 p.m. ET Sept. 29, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Substitute Edin Dzeko grabbed a late winner as Manchester City came from behind to beat Fulham 2-1 and revive its challenge for the Premier League title.

The Bosnia striker slammed a powerful finish into the roof of the net in the 87th minute - moments after coming on - to end a run of two straight draws that had dropped the defending champions off the fierce pace set by early leader Chelsea.

Mladen Petric had put Fulham ahead in the 10th with a disputed penalty after John Arne Riise fell under the challenge of Pablo Zabaleta, but Sergio Aguero's first goal of the season had brought City level just before halftime.

The victory keeps Roberto Mancini's unbeaten team four points behind Chelsea, which won 2-1 at Arsenal earlier Saturday, but will help quieten the critics who say City isn't the same force as last season.

"I think that we played a good game," City manager Roberto Mancini said. "I was worried because we continued to play well and continued to create chances, but didn't score (the winner) for 87 minutes."

City remains without a clean sheet, however, after falling behind following a decision to award a penalty for a trip by Zabaleta.

Petric made no mistake with his spot-kick, sending goalkeeper Joe Hart the wrong way, and then wasted a decent chance to double Fulham's advantage five minutes later as he scooped over after fine link-up play with Hugo Rodallega.

Sergio Aguero headed a close-range effort into the side netting but the Argentina striker - playing alongside international teammate Carlos Tevez up front - made amends when he tapped in after David Silva's flick was saved by Mark Schwarzer.

First Mario Balotelli and then Dzeko was thrown on as City sought a winner and the latter provided it, pouncing on Riise's failure to clear Gael Clichy's cross and rifling home an unstoppable shot.

"They are a very good team but there is always a possibility against them to play your football like, for example, Arsenal did last week (in the 1-1 draw with City)," Fulham manager Martin Jol said.

"We couldn't play our style, especially in the second half. We couldn't keep the ball, they were stronger than us and more eager to score."

RIM shares pop as 2Q not as horrible as feared

NEW YORK (AP) ? Shares of Research in Motion Ltd. popped Friday after the BlackBerry maker's results in its fiscal second quarter weren't quite as awful as investors had feared.

But analysts cautioned that RIM is still struggling in the increasingly competitive mobile market.

The Canadian company posted another large quarterly loss and its BlackBerry smartphone shipments shrunk 30 percent to 7.4 million in the quarter ended Sept. 1.

RIM is losing market share in North America, where Apple's iPhone and phones that run Google's Android software are increasingly dominant. But it has stepped up sales in developing markets and actually increased its subscriber base and cash position.

Its latest loss came to $235 million, or 45 cents per U.S. share. Revenue totaled $2.9 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet expected worse: A loss of 47 cents on revenue of $2.49 billion.

But investors' relief Friday does not imply that all is well for the once-pioneering smartphone maker. Shares, up 64 cents at $7.78 in late morning trading Friday, remain a far cry from the company's heyday. The stock fetched nearly $150 in June 2008.

Yes, RIM boosted its cash balance, but its core operations are still losing money, said Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu. And he remains concerned that the company's upcoming BlackBerry 10 platform will not be able to compete well against iPhones and Android phones.

The company said Thursday that the BlackBerry 10 remains on track to be released in the first quarter of 2013. It is banking its future on the much-delayed upgrade, meant to offer the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps that users now demand.

And the better-than-expected quarter was largely the result of promotions and phone upgrade programs, which ultimately reduced the average amount of revenue the company generated from each of its customers, said Jefferies analyst Peter Misek. That doesn't bode well for the future.

"All hope is on BlackBerry 10. We won't know success or failure until next summer," he added.

Learning Your Lessons From Past Relationship Mistakes | Black and ...

Marriage

by BMWK Staff ?|? on September 28th, 2012 ?|? Broken Heart

We are all creatures of habit, aren?t we? I don?t know about you, but the ?mistake cycle of life,? as I call it and fall prey to time and time again, goes a bit like this: I make a mistake, I feel terrible, I vow to never do it again, time passes and the negative memory of the event fades, and I make the same mistake again.

I may proclaim to friends and family, like many other people will do, that ?I won?t make the same mistake twice!? ? but I do. Take the example of a speeding ticket. There is nothing worse than the blue lights in the rear view mirror, in addition to the heavy fine, hassle and fear of increased insurance rates. For months after the experience, I will drive slower than my grandmother used to, with frustrated and impatient drivers riding my bumper. But then something happens ? the speedometer begins creeping up again once more and I?ve erased the negative memory from my mind ? destined to get another speeding ticket in the near future.

Romantic relationships are also frequently the victims of the ?mistake cycle of life.? After breaking up, I vow to never consider dating anyone ?like him? again. As I sulk, completely alone, I think about all of the qualities I didn?t like which caused me pain, and commit to staying far away from any partner who seems even remotely ?like he was.? But then I become blinded by the euphoria that the honeymoon phase of a new relationship brings, and I?m right back where I started from, destined for another heartbreak.

Whether a speeding ticket or romantic relationship, my failure comes from never learning a lesson. Given how often I see other acquaintances doing the same, I assume I am not alone. Life gives us lessons everyday and we can ignore them or grow and become better, happier individuals. For me, the time has come to start paying attention and find value in the pain. Life is a school and I no longer want to flunk out, so to speak.

Love and relationships, healthy ones that is, can lead to such a rich and fulfilling life. I want a lifetime of loving and laughter, not anger and tears. Assuming you feel the same, it is time that we start learning from past relationship mistakes. With pen and notebook in hand, the time is now to begin reflecting on what went wrong each time the partnership eroded. One column is for your past partners, things out of your control. The other column, however, is for you. Yes we all contribute to the health and/or destruction of relationships.

When the list is complete, this is where learning your lesson begins. Where your partners are concerned, look for themes that keep coming up. Do you tend to go for ?bad boys? or ?father figures?? Were their friends always first or did your partner suffocate you by being attached to your hip? Once you begin to see a pattern, you can create a healthy list of qualities that are essential in any future mate ? and stick to it!

Finally, there is the issue of you. Sometimes we make the same mistakes in love because of our own weaknesses. Maybe you fear being alone, you date anyone who comes along, feeling lucky simply to be asked out. Perhaps you have difficulty with trusting others and over time that pushes your lover away. Whatever the case may be, the lesson to be learned isn?t always about the faults of others. Sometimes when we make the same mistakes again and again, the lesson to be learned is that it is us who needs to change.

Friday Illusion: How to move a dot with your mind

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

Think an object can't be in two places at once? This animation shows how the perceived location of a dot is influenced by what's happening around it.

In this video, a flashing dot is surrounded by two diamonds that shift across the screen. When they move horizontally, the dot seems to shift sideways and slightly upwards. In a second version, in which the corners of the diamonds are obscured, the dot appears to move diagonally. In fact, the dot never changes place.

The illusion is the work of Peter Kohler from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and his team. Kohler has been trying to determine if the dot's perceived shift in position is caused by the overall motion of the diamonds or that of its components. For example, although the shapes as a whole are moving sideways, viewing the edges in isolation shows that segments of the diamonds are moving upwards. "Our results show that global motion does influence the shift," he says. "But the fact that even the unoccluded diamond does not yield a purely horizontal shift indicates that local signals are also very important."

The team now plans to investigate how quickly our brain perceives the shift. "Integration of local and global motion is known to take about 150 milliseconds," says Kohler. "It would be interesting to see if the effect takes a similar amount of time to kick in."

By presenting the illusion for very short amounts of time, the researchers will be able to determine if different versions are initially perceived in the same way. "We also have fMRI work under way to identify brain areas that represent the perceived shifted location rather than the actual location," says Kohler.

The illusion was recently presented at the European Conference on Visual Perception in Alghero, Italy.

If you enjoyed this brain trick, check out our previous Friday Illusions to see, for example, how you can control an animation with your mind.

GALLERY: Audi unveils Crosslane Coup? concept car at Paris ...

Audi provides a glimpse of the future shape of design, along with automotive and drive concepts, through its Audi crosslane coup? concept car. This vehicle is an entirely new fusion of technology, engineering and design, and provides pointers to the design language of Audi?s future Q models.

With a Multimaterial Space Frame, the vehicle concept strikes out along entirely new paths with regard to weight, costs and energy usage over its lifecycle, and is an evolutionary stage of Audi ultra ? the lightweight construction principle from Audi.

An innovative and efficient plug-in hybrid drive based on a purpose-designed 1.5-liter three-cylinder TFSI and two electric motors redefines the benchmark, with fuel consumption of only 1.1 liters per 100 km (213.81 US mpg) and CO2 emissions of just 26 grams per km (41.84 grams per mile).

The result is a cosmopolitan vehicle that will appeal to young, sporty customers in particular thanks to its removable roof and the customizable services available under the Audi connect concept.

Pioneering concept: the Multimaterial Space Frame
The Multimaterial Space Frame of the compact Audi crosslane coup? is comprised of three materials ? aluminum, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP). The concept car has an unladen weight of about 1,390 kg (3,064.43 lb), including the large lithium-ion battery.

The aluminum profiles form a continuous, rigid structure around the occupant cell. Beams beneath the front lid join the single-frame grille, which performs a supporting function and is also made from aluminum, with the occupant cell.

The front and rear crash structures are made from CFRP and the supporting CFRP structures inside the occupant cell include the inner sills, the center tunnel, the bulkhead, and the cross-members in the floor. Surface GFRP components with partial CFRP reinforcements complete the body concept.

Audi is convinced that the highly integrated Multimaterial Space Frame is the right path to the future. Its weight is of the same magnitude as a monolithic body of CFRP. It also offers convincing advantages in terms of costs to the customer and its energy usage in a life cycle assessment.

Innovative: dual-mode hybrid concept
The plug-in hybrid drive of the Audi crosslane coup?, which is described as a dual-mode hybrid, is as innovative as it is efficient. It comprises a combustion engine, two electric motors and a single-stage transmission; its system power is 130 kW (177 hp). The Audi crosslane coup? sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62.14?mph) in 8.6 seconds, and in pure electric mode takes 9.8 seconds. The car?s top speed is 182 km/h (113.09 mph). Its average fuel consumption is a mere 1.1 liters per 100 km (213.81 US mpg) and it emits 26 grams per km (41.84?grams per mile) of CO2. The lithium-ion battery has an output of 17.4 kWh, sufficient for an operating range of around 86 km (53.44 miles) in the electric mode.

The combustion engine is a purpose-developed three-cylinder TFSI with a displacement of 1.5 liters, delivering an output of 95 kW (130 hp) and 200 Nm (147.51 lb-ft) of torque. The three-cylinder engine is coupled to an electric motor (EM 1), which acts primarily as a starter and an alternator. It develops an output of 50 kW (68 hp) and 210 Nm (154.89 lb-ft) of torque. Electrical traction is provided by the second electric motor (EM 2) developing 85 kW (116 hp) and 250?Nm (184.39 lb-ft) of torque. The transmission makes it possible to connect the combustion engine complete with alternator to the remainder of the drivetrain by means of a claw clutch.

The dual-mode hybrid concept enables different operating modes. From 0 up to 55 km/h (34.18 mph), drive power is supplied solely by the EM 2, which draws the energy it needs primarily from the battery. In serial mode, the combustion engine and the alternator (EM 1) produce electrical energy to support, relieve or substitute the battery should it be discharged.

The electric mode is possible up to 130 km/h (80.78 mph). Starting at about 55?km/h (34.18 mph) the drive system allows the TFSI engine together with the alternator to couple to the drivetrain ? in this hybrid mode, the drive sources combine to optimize both efficiency and performance. Above 130 km/h (80.78?mph), the three-cylinder engine becomes the main drive source but the EM 1 can support it if required.

The driver of the Audi crosslane coup? can choose between the ?cruise? and ?race? settings. The ?cruise? mode prioritizes electric driving. The driver does not notice either gear changes or the power source kicking in. When the TFSI is running, its engine speed is always adapted to the road speed ? without a ?rubber-band? effect. The high efficiency of the transmission makes the dual-mode hybrid drive especially efficient in urban traffic.

Forward-looking: exterior design
The 2+2-seater Audi crosslane coup? is 4.21 meters long (13.81 ft), 1.88 meters wide (6.17 ft) and 1.51 meters high (4.95 ft), with a wheelbase of 2.56 meters (8.40 ft). Its body design comes across as powerful and striking, and it already provides a foretaste of the design language of a future generation of Audi Q models.

The single-frame grille, which is subdivided into several segments by struts, dominates the front end. Its prominent frame is integrated into the Multimaterial Space Frame as a supporting element. This solution symbolizes the philosophy behind the Audi crosslane coup?: a totally new fusion of basic concept, technology and design.

The trapezoidal headlights use Audi Matrix LED headlight technology. Small, individually controllable light-emitting diodes generate all lighting functions, and microreflectors enable their precise positioning. The bumper incorporates large, mainly smooth-surfaced air intakes. Through two narrow openings in the front lid it is possible to glimpse the upper aluminum members of the Multimaterial Space Frame.

Along the sides, the horizontal edges are the dominant feature above the wheels. The low greenhouse tapers into a very flat C-post, emphasizing the coup?-like character of the Audi crosslane coup?. The doors extend a long way down thanks to the space frame design, which allows very low sills. The doors open to reveal the aluminum structures of the Multimaterial Space Frame.

The tail lights are a variation on the motif of the headlights; the trunk lid seam divides them each into two segments. The bumper, the lower section of which is made from CFRP, incorporates an aluminum diffuser that extends quite some way up. The roof element comprises two CFRP shells and weighs slightly less than ten kilograms (22.05 lb). The driver and front passenger can unlatch it by an electric drive, remove it from the body structure and fit it over the trunk.

Moveable: trunk
The trunk forms a separate pan within the body structure; it is attached to the backs of the rear seats, which are separate from the seat cushions. At the press of a button, the entire unit travels about 40 cm (15.75 in) forward electrically; this is how the latched roof reaches its end position, in which it protects the luggage. At the same time, the level surface under the trunk becomes accessible, and it offers a flat storage space for dirty or wet objects.

The driver and front passenger sit on electrically adjustable sport seats with integrated head restraints, the shells of which are made from CFRP. The center console integrates a large selector lever, which is electrically extended when the car is started; it is used to control the hybrid drive. The spokes of the steering wheel incorporate control surfaces for the thumbs, which the driver can use to carry out most functions. These can also be controlled just as intuitively from a large touchpad on the center console.

The low dashboard is very clearly turned towards the driver. The air conditioning controls incorporate miniature displays. The virtual displays in the instrument cluster can be toggled between two different levels, and a powermeter visualizes the drive system?s operating statuses.

The Audi crosslane coup? introduces new online services under the key word Audi connect. Its passengers are always connected to the Internet community ? via Twitter, Facebook or by sending photos and videos recorded on the road. A completely new feature is the ?Escape Manager? ? a program passengers can use to review and comment on the routes they are driving for their friends.

Geometric clarity: interior design
The interior design of the Audi crosslane coup? continues the design language of the exterior in the geometrical clarity of its basic shapes; instrument covers and the grilles on the air nozzles, for example, take up the trapezoidal theme. The narrow gap dimensions and three-dimensional surfaces reflect Audi?s uncompromisingly high quality standards.

The dominant interior material of the Audi crosslane coup? is CFRP, which is used in a number of different variations. On the dashboard cowl, for instance, the composite fibers are all aligned in a single direction; this unidirectional arrangement is a new departure in the automotive sector. The CFRP parts are slightly lighter in color in some areas and darker in others, an effect achieved by different clear coat applications.

The aluminum elements, too, are used in a subtly differentiated way. Most of them are machine-polished, but the air nozzles use a black anodized light alloy. The vehicle floor is made from glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) incorporating sections of a new material: Thick cords are woven with rubber threads to form a hard-wearing carpet.

In their leather selections, Audi designers also employed various material grades. The most widely used grade is soft semi-aniline leather. Velvet leather in black provides an enlivening contrast. It has a robust, slightly coarse surface reminiscent of suede.

QE3 may spark a Currency War as Traders anticipate more CB ...

In an article featured by the Financial Times dated September 26, 2012, writer Alice Ross raised the possibility that the Fed?s new round of quantitative easing dubbed as QE3 may spark a currency war. Other countries, particularly Japan and Brazil have openly criticized the QE3 claiming that it is an intentional ploy by the Fed to keep the U.S. Dollar low against other currencies. A low dollar has the net effect of cutting down the export earnings of countries selling goods to the U.S. as well as making imports by U.S. traders from these countries more expensive. While a low dollar may be good to the U.S. economy, it can wreak havoc to the economies of its trading partners.

The Fed?s intention behind the QE3 is to inject more capital to the banking system by buying their long term debt instruments like mortgages. Fed is projecting that with more capital on hand, banks will start lending money to businesses which in turn will give the economy the big push it needs. Unfortunately, QE3 has a negative effect of weakening the dollar which actually started sliding down against other currencies even before the third round of quantitative easing was put in place two weeks ago.

Already, the BOJ increased its own bond buying program to bring down the value of the Japanese Yen against the U.S. currency in response to the QE3. Traders are speculating that a large scale BOJ intervention may be in the works according to the same Financial Times article, especially after its bond buying efforts failed to weaken the yen. Other countries which have expressly intervened to depend their respective currencies in the past are also likely to follow as they start to realize the crippling effect of a weak dollar to their own economy. This may ultimately lead to an unprecedented currency war according to some analysts.

The possibility of central bank intervention in the currency market is what the majority of traders fear most. Learning lessons from the past when Central Banks intervened in the open to defend their currencies, these traders have in fact started to draw away from currencies whose central banks are more likely to step in and intervene. They are setting their sights on currencies whose central banks are not known to intervene in the currency market like Mexico.

?

?

Meanwhile, in the European front, Spain?s cost of borrowing has risen sharply, fueling speculations that Spain may finally avail of the ECB rescue plan. However, the stringent belt tightening measures being required from them by the ECB have already fired up separatist sentiments within the country, especially in the Catalonia region and among Basque separatists. The situation has placed the Spanish financial authorities in a queer ?damned if you do, damned if you don?t? kind of a ticklish situation.

The U.S. dollar, on the other hand, has remained resilient amid all these conflicting developments. Apparently comfortable at the current levels of the U.S. currency, the Fed is concentrating more in reigniting the local economy and less concerned with the likelihood of a currency war which the QE3 detractors have prophesied.

German parliament bans laptops; members bring a typewriter

A ban on laptops by the German parliament has given rise to a humorous, anachronistic protest by the country's Pirate Party: instead of laptops, they brought in a?typewriter.

The ban became official a week ago, when the "Council of Elders," a group of senior officials, added new rules to the parliament guidelines that specifically prohibited laptops. Their objection is ostensibly that the fans and keyboards on such devices are loud and distracting; tablets are allowed, since they generally operate silently.

A second problem is the use of social networks during state business. Young and Internet-savvy factions like the Pirate Party advocate dissemination of information using the likes of Twitter and Facebook, but the Council of Elders deems it a "parallel debate" (as rendered?by Google Translate) and therefore bans such activity.

When the ban was announced, the Pirate Party members brought out an old electric typewriter instead, drawing instant remonstration from the parliamentary president,?Klaus Schlie, who accused them of "monkey business."

Monkey business or not, the symbolic?challenge to the ban resulted in debate and permission, for now, for members?to bring laptops. The matter was reported on the German news site KN Online, and the typewriter itself was captured by Twitter user @appgra.

The larger question, that of using social networks to augment political debates during parliament time, will be discussed at a later session.

NYC Public Schools Offer Students The Plan B Pill & Other Birth ...

Girls in class in high schoolYoung girls in public school in New York City have a reason to be sexually active and irresponsible all at the same time! The Department of Education is giving out morning-after pills (Plan B) and other birth-control drugs to its students. NYC public schools have been giving out condoms since the dawn of time, ok, well maybe a bit shorter than that, but now they?ve decided to step their birth control game up with their horny teens.

Must Read: Snooki Law Proposed To Let New Jersey Towns Regulate Reality TV

According to The Post, ?School nurse offices stocked with the contraceptives can dispense Plan B emergency contraception and other oral or injectable birth control to girls without telling their parents ? unless parents opt out after getting a school informational letter about the new program.?

Plan B is typically available over-the-counter for women over the age of 18. CATCH (Connecting Adolescents To Comprehensive Health) is part of a citywide movement against the epidemic of teen pregnancy and they?re the ones responsible for providing birth control to students under the age of 18. With this CATCH program, students are able to tell their nurses that they?ve had unprotected sex the night before and the nurse will give them a Plan B pill.

The National Association of School Nurses claim that this may be the first time that Plan B bills have been given out in public schools. This fall, many students can expect to receive birth control in the form of Depo shots once every three months.

I never fully believed in the abstinence lessons educators would teach us in high school back in the day. Kids were ?doing it? and they will always be ?doing it? no matter how much teachers beg and plead them to abstain. I always thought that giving kids what they needed to be sexually responsible was a more intelligent move, ie. condoms and fully educating them on the risks of sex. With these powerful tools, young and hormonal teenagers could engage in sexual activities while being well-versed in protective measures against the ills of sex.

When I read this this story on Feministing about students being able to receive Plan B pills while in high school and without a parent?s consent, I thought?well, this is certainly a progressive idea. But is it irresponsible to offer mere children the option of taking a morning after pill or even allowing them to take birth control in various ways? Kids having sex is just irresponsible no matter how you look at it. In my humble opinion, you?re just not ready for sex when you?re a teenager.

Providing teens with pills that (in their young minds) fix mistakes from the night before is not the best solution. This is the type of problem with no real way to solve it. As I said before, kids are going to ?do it? no matter what you tell them about sex. I remember seeing all the disgusting photos of leaking penises and red and swollen vaginas and thinking, ?There?s no way I?m letting that happen to me!? These days, kids seem to be desensitized by just what could happen to their lives when good sex goes?bad.

MTV has created an entire franchise based on sexually curious and irresponsible teens called ?16 & Pregnant.? On that show, we see various girls with sob stories about how their (usually) good-for-nothing boyfriend knocked them up and now they?re stuck with the consequences of raising a child, as a child.

The girls from these chosen few NYC schools won?t be facing the same sad fate as the cast members of ?16 & Pregnant? because they get to use various forms of birth-control at their own choosing. Oh, the lovely double-edged sword that is sexually active teenagers! There?s really no real way to avoid the cut. Like you, I wonder if birth-control gives these high schoolers a bigger desire to have sex?

I honestly believe that it does because when you?re a teenager, responsibility is not high on your priority list. But you know what is? Doing whatever is pleasing to you. At least that?s what I cared about when I was a teenager. Birth-control teaches young and impressionable youth that there are ways for you to have sex without consequences. I fear that teenagers don?t understand birth control and think it creates a cushion for them to fall back on when they slip up during hot and heavy makeout sessions. Ultimately, the problem with CATCH is that it will allow teens to drop the ball while between the sheets and reach for their faux safety net aka a Plan B pill the? next day.

What do you think about public schools getting Plan B pills? Sound off in the comments below!

Lavish CEO pay doesn't work as intended: study

By Martha C. White, NBC News contributor

The arms race in CEO pay doesn?t help performance or retention, according to a new study.

Outsized CEO pay has been a bone of contention for shareholders and a flashpoint for public discontent, but was always justified with the conventional wisdom that if a company doesn?t pay its top brass top dollar, they?ll go somewhere where they can earn more.

Charles Elson and Craig Ferrere, director and fellow, respectively, at the?John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware, took aim at this long-held theory in a new paper, as reported by the New York Times last weekend.

"The problem is the standard practice of benchmarking pay to that of peers," the two wrote.

To determine how much to pay a CEO, corporate compensation committees look at how much the chiefs of similar companies earn, which has the result of lumping together all CEO talent into one pool.?Elson and Ferrere argued that expertise in management isn?t the same, and isn't as good, as having a deep base of knowledge in one particular industry.?

Many of the skills that make a chief executive successful don?t translate to another company. ?The theoretical underpinning of [peer grouping] became the notion of transferability,? Elson said. ?That was false. The superstar theory of the CEO failed, and if transferability failed, the peer system has to fail.?

?There?s been a sense for some time that the external view of pay-setting has been a problem in ratcheting up pay,"?said Paul Hodgson, chief research analyst at corporate governance research company GMI Ratings.?

Elson and Ferrere said benchmarking against what other CEOs make is flawed in several ways that inflate pay packages.

One problem is that the definition of what constitutes a ?similar? company can be manipulated to skew pay higher by including larger companies or ones in different industries.?Institutional shareholders are ?very, very suspicious? of that practice, Hodgson said.

Even without manipulation, Elson said companies should decide how much to pay a CEO based on performance, not how much his or her counterparts earn. ?If you don?t have that internal benchmark you?ve made a mistake to begin with,? he said.

Two other elements of peer benchmarking nudge up pay, the researchers wrote. Compensation committees are reluctant to give CEOs any less than the median pay for the peer group. Compensation packages generally range from the 50th to the 90th percentile, which inevitably inflates pay over time. Another?unintended consequence of offering above-average pay is that successful CEOs wind up subsidizing their less-talented counterparts, since performance isn?t factored into the equation.?

The researchers drew a link between higher CEO compensation and the trend of chief executives being recruited from outside a company, but said companies perform better over the long term when someone familiar with the industry is at the helm.

?The necessary skills to successfully run a company cannot be acquired besides through actual experience at the company,? they wrote. ?The years spent acquiring 'general' experience rather than a firm-?specific expertise were unproductive.?

Companies would do better to look within their own ranks than to cast a wider net, they said, since even a CEO who displays talent running one company usually can?t export those skills to a new corporation. They pointed to earlier research showing that, although CEOs brought in from outside often earned more, the companies they led subsequently performed on par with or worse than those that promoted from inside.

?Each organization has its own culture and if you?re in the culture... you?re often more effective than someone who isn?t,? Elson said.

"It?s always more expensive," Hodgson said. "Very concrete examples show that hiring from the outside often doesn?t work.?

"Unconditional" Love

My friend Darren Moorman was one of the producers of the film,?Unconditional. ?He?s a hugely talented Christian in the filmmaking industry, and I hope to show some of the short films he has produced ? films that were directed by another believing friend of mine, Matt Pope, including one short film for which I wrote the script.

Unconditional?released last weekend, but it?s had a tough time penetrating the market. ?Christians often express their desire for more uplifting, redemptive stories. ?This is a powerful story, well told. ?I hope people will give it a shot. ?If we don?t show that Christians will come out for redemptive stories, even when they?re so well crafted (it has very positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes), then we?ll continue to face the same problem.

Here?s the trailer:

Most theaters are keeping the film running at least another weekend. ?Check out your local listings.

What Android users should know about the Jelly Bean 4.1 update

Many Android smartphones and tablets, including the Samsung Galaxy S III and Google Nexus 7, are offering the latest Android operating-system update, version 4.1, Jelly Bean. Although Jelly Bean enhances many of the great features offered in Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, users should consider the new operating system more of an evolution than a revolution.

Smooth like butter

The first thing Google showed off when introducing Jelly Bean at the Google I/O event in June this year was Project Butter. As the name implies, Android users can expect Jelly Bean to be a whole lot smoother than previous versions. Transitions are silky smooth when scrolling between screens or pages, animations are slicker, and the touch response is generally improved. Cleverly, Jelly Bean knows when you?re touching the screen and speeds up your device?s processor, then slows it down when you?re not. Anyone who buys a Jelly Bean-powered device -- or updates an older model that is eligible -- should discover that his or her device is generally snappier and notice speed improvements throughout the Android system.

Nice new notifications

Android has always done a good job when it comes to notifications from various apps or services, requiring other software and hardware makers to constantly play catch-up. In Jelly Bean, notifications are even better, offering far more contextual information. The notifications are expandable and actionable. If you?re notified about a meeting, you can dismiss it right from the notification or even email other guests. Just missed a call? Jelly Bean lets you call or text someone back right from the pull-down notification.

Google Now is the here and now

Based on your personal Google search history, both on your device and when logged in to Google services elsewhere, Google Now helps inform you of events, activities, and more. It is location-aware and can tell you the weather in the morning, how the traffic will be on your commute, or how your favorite sports team is doing. Cards appear during the day, popping up from the bottom of the screen, and you can choose which ones you want to surface. They can track everything from flight delays to upcoming appointments, public transit schedules, and local currency rates, and they can even make suggestions of places to visit nearby.

The basic Google search functionality has been improved to take into account the power of Google?s Knowledge Graph, which shows Web results in a smarter way. Voice search and voice recognition are also better.

Fun with widgets and photos

When you add widgets to your home screen in Jelly Bean, the other shortcuts automatically move and shift, so it?s easy to find the best spot for the widget. In addition, many widgets will resize on their own to fit, or you can simply adjust them yourself.

The camera isn?t necessarily different on Jelly Bean, but sharing images is a whole lot easier. You can swipe from the camera to the film strip of photos to instantly view the images you just shot, and you can swipe away the ones you don?t like. Accidently deleted an image? With Jelly Bean it?s simple to undo the delete with a tap. Using Android Beam, you can share photos with another device just by bringing it close.

Built-in system and Google apps

Many of these improvements are subtle but indicate that Google is always tweaking its operating system under the surface to make things better. The People app, for example, helps you to organize your contacts, and there is a new algorithm to avoid duplication. It?s also possible to clear the ?frequently called? list. When you miss a call, a new notification lets you return the call or reply by SMS with a single touch. The Calendar app is smoother, notifications are far more descriptive, and it?s easy to create your own default quick responses for emailing guests. There are subtle improvements to the? built-in keyboard, too. These include more accurate dictionaries, better prediction and correction, and an easy way to switch languages.

The Google+ app has many improvements -- for example, you can now create and manage events directly from your device or see the live streams of all participants in the video Hangout. Gmail has seen improved notifications, while YouTube has gotten a slicker and more intuitive interface. Google Chrome takes advantage of Jelly Bean?s advanced rendering to improve responsiveness, while Maps adds support for offline viewing, built-in Zagat ratings, and even indoor walking directions. Fortunately, because these apps are available independently, even users with older versions of Android can take advantage of their latest updates and improvements.

So while Jelly Bean isn?t the massive sea change that Android users experienced when Ice Cream Sandwich was first released last year, it does improve on its predecessor significantly. It makes your device work more smoothly and responsively, and it patches up a few bugs and issues that emerged in previous operating systems.

Rumors are swirling that the next Android software release will be either 4.2 or 5.0, Key Lime Pie. Any sweetness will emerge from that tasty dessert is as yet unknown.

Why the Real Estate Crisis Had to Happen

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012 | mansion

We cannot understand the present unless we understand the past. The first question to be asked is when did the real estate crisis become inevitable? The correct answer is in the time period between 1980 and 1982. It has been forgotten today but the last real estate crisis in this country were the twin real estate crises of the 1980s. In the early 1980s the first crisis was brought on by double-digit mortgage interest rates. Then in the late 1980s there was the savings and loan crisis, which in those days provided most of the nation?s mortgage capital. In response to these twin crises congress passed two laws that made today?s real estate crisis inevitable.

After these acts were passed it was only a question of time until the stars aligned correctly for the volcano to erupt. In 1980, congress passed the DIDMCA Act. Prior to this time, it was illegal to charge less credit worthy customers a higher rate of interest on their mortgage. Then in 1982, congress passed the AMPT Act, which allowed adjustable rate mortgages or ARMs for the first time. Prior to this act adjustable rate mortgages had been illegal.

If you go back to 1896 when reliable housing records first began to be kept you will find that from 1896 to 1996 housing prices tracked the rate of inflation. Then suddenly from 1996 to 2006 housing prices doubled. The problem of course in that the income of the American people did not come anywhere near to doubling in that time period. When you stop to think about it, you will realize that it is impossible for the price of housing to exceed the rise in the income of the American people for any sustained period of time. Unless there is an enabler, a speculator?s tool that allows this to happen. What was the speculator?s tool or device that enabled this process to occur? What was the enabler?

In the whole of American history there has only been one prior real estate bubble that resembles the real estate boom and bust that we are now witnessing. It was the great Florida land boom of the 1920s. Real estate has always been expensive. What has always held real estate prices in check was that people just did not have enough money to bull prices up for very long. The money is just not there. The device that enabled the Florida land boom to occur was the ?binder.? This is a real estate term that has gone out of use today. In the manner in which it was then used it was essentially an option payment on the down payment if you can conceive of such a thing.

What it boiled down to is that people thought they were speculating on real estate but in reality they were speculating on real estate options.

The stock market has long been the ultimate proving ground for speculative tools. Those of us who are stock market speculators are very familiar with stock options. The only thing that the reader has to know about options is that they are speculating tools that possess tremendous leverage. In other words, you can make a killing on a chump change investment.

Both the binder of the 1920s and the ARM are in reality real estate options. All options expire worthless if they are not exercised prior to their expiration date. Most ARMs were written to expire in two or three years, the fixed interest rate period. At that moment the option had to be exercised or rolled over because the option would become worthless. People were deluded into believing that they were buying real estate. When in reality they were speculating in real estate options. As we have seen, the tools for the bubble were in place by 1982. the only thing lacking now was the mania. The boom years from 1991 to 2007 provided the mania. Real estate prices rose relentlessly. It was a boom that seemed like it would never end. You couldn?t lose in real estate because no matter how much you over paid because rising prices bailed out everyone.

Today in the aftermath of the boom, we are already discounting the impact on the human psych that manias and bubbles produce. To put it bluntly by the end of the boom almost no one could believe that real estate prices could fall. This nearly universal belief gradually eroded prudent behavior. The more risks you took the more you were rewarded. There was no down side.

In the early 90s the use of sub prime mortgages and ARMs were limited-since almost all sub prime mortgages were also ARMs they will be considered as a unit- but as the boom progressed their importance grew and grew. Mortgage brokers just could not stay away from sub prime mortgages. They were three to five times more profitable than standard mortgages. Once they had sold one they didn?t want to sell anything else. The caution that lenders had originally shown toward the new mortgage products was relentlessly ground away as the endless boom continued. Caution wasn?t being rewarded, it was being punished. There was a Gresham?s Law in effect- Gresham was an economist-in which bad or reckless behavior which was constantly being rewarded by lush profits drove out good or cautious behavior because the profits were inferior. In the final years of the boom, conservative firms could not even keep their mortgage brokers from bolting to subprime lenders.

Then around the year 2000 Minsky?s Law kicked in. Hyman Minsky was a Noble Prize winning economist.

Minsky?s Law Over periods of prolonged prosperity the economy evolves from financial relationships that engender a stable financial system to financial relationships that produce economic instability. The longer the trend persists the more violent the correction when the trend reverses.

As the boom rolled on the most important factor was that almost everyone was a winner. This was true in spite of the fact that subprime mortgages were constantly defaulting at the higher rates that had been predicted. Not only was the higher default rate not a problem but everyone was making out like a bandit with subprime mortgages. This included the subprime borrower. As soon as he fell behind his friendly subprime mortgage broker would be there to write him a new subprime mortgage. In fact he often got to take out new money when he refinanced the mortgage. It was not unusual to have subprime borrowers take out new mortgages every two or three years during the boom.

If there wasn?t enough equity to suit the lenders, real estate speculators would be pounding at his door offering to take the property off his hands as soon as the notice of default had been published. Often at a profit over his purchase price.

The banks were the greatest winners of all. They were making a killing. It is obscene how much money a bank can make during the foreclosure process as long as someone buys the foreclosed property. Not only do they receive all the back payments but the brutal penalty fees as well. Indeed the most profitable scenario that can be imagined for a mortgage lender is to make nothing but high profit subprime loans and then to have them all default. Their profits would be enormous. That is, so long as the lender never has to take back the property.

When the boom ended, things became incredibly ugly for the banks with amazing speed. One of the most important favors that real estate speculators did for the banks when they bought a foreclosed properly was that in addition to paying the obscene penalty fees they also paid the nearly as obscene attorney foreclosure fees. Not to mention repairing the often seriously vandalized property. An angry homeowner can easily do $20,000-$30,000 in damages. When the boom ended all these expenses landed on the banks head like a falling safe. The banks never knew what hit them. I am sure that they still think that they were run over by a Mack truck.

US futures head lower on more gloom from Europe

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stock futures slid Monday as investors, with few indicators from the U.S., pored over more gloomy economic data out of Europe.

Dow Jones industrial futures fell 48 points to 13,452. The broader S&P futures slipped 5.9 points to 1,446. Nasdaq futures gave up 17.25 points to 2,835.25.

Global markets have been buoyed by the latest government efforts in the U.S., Europe and Japan to kick-start growth. However, economic indicators are beginning to overshadow the potential for success by the central banks.

On Monday, Germany's Ifo index of business confidence fell for a fifth consecutive month, revealing the headwinds faced by even Europe's biggest and strongest economy. The Ifo index dipped to 101.4 in September from 102.3 in August. The report was troublesome to many because economists had expected the index to remain at least flat.

Like the U.S., the concern is that a strong economy that is on the rebound in Germany will be weighed down by the rest of the European Union, half of whose members have already entered into recession.

Germany's economy grew 0.3 percent in the second quarter from the previous quarter, but a number of economists now believe the country is heading for a recession in the second half of the year.

Investors in the U.S. will certainly be looking for more good news from the U.S. housing market, which appears to be bouncing back after being a stuck in a rut for years.

Before the latest data on new and pending home sales is released later in the week, Lennar on Monday became the latest builder to post surprisingly strong earnings.

A rise in new orders and the number of homes delivered, in adding to a big tax benefit, had the Miami homebuilder quadrupling profits. KB Home on Friday did almost as well, and housing shares jumped on optimistic comments from its CEO, Stuart Miller.

Before the market opened Monday, shares of homebuilders were on the rise.

Giving Yourself a Working Area For Your Projects At Home | Your ...

If you do a lot of home improvement projects, you can benefit from your own workshop. It does not have to take up a lot of space, but there are some things you need to think about in order to put together a workshop that helps you out. Here are some valuable tips to help you get a workshop in order.

Consider a trade with someone you know. Check around your family, friends and coworkers for anyone who has the skillset you need or is maybe married to an individual who can do the job. Swap favors. Maybe you can babysit their kids, clean their house, pet sit or mow their yard while they are away on vacation. You might could even offer your professional services depending on your personal skills, such as computer repair or accounting.

If all these options yield you no leads you like, just post on Facebook what you need done. Someone among your friends will have a great recommendation. You might even want to do this first.

Consider replacing your toilet and sink with wall-hung variants. With both of them, more floor is going to visible to the eyes of anyone using the room. They are also going to have more space for their feet and legs. Wall-hung sinks in particular allow the user to step up closer without having to bend over a cabinet. If you go this route, seize the opportunity to put in a very light colored floor to add more brightness to the room. A tiled pattern can also visually extend the room horizontally.

Figure out where your workshop will be. For many people, the natural space for a workshop is the garage. However, if you do not have a lot of room in there, you need to determine where the workshop will be. You may have an outdoor workshop or use that extra bedroom. You can have a smaller workshop, for example a closet, if you have to. Size is not as important as how you use the space. Take the time to consult with family members or roommates; after all, they live there too and they may have an idea or two about where your workshop should go.

Have the right lighting. If you are going to be doing any kind of work in there, you need to have the right kind of lighting. In fact, lighting could be a home improvement project for you! Take stock of the current lighting situation and do what you need to do in order to have enough lighting for your tasks.

Even if you are rather creative with your usual home improvements, a tiny bathroom can frustrate you for ideas. Now that you have read this article, you hopefully have some fresh mental thoughts to chew on. Choose one or two and try them out to make your tiny bathroom a bigger space.

If you are looking for a good cordless drill for your personal home improvement, then find out more about Bosch litheon drill or learn about Makita impact drill now.

Syrian warplanes bomb Aleppo, kill 3 children

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian warplanes bombed two buildings on Monday in the northern city of Aleppo, killing at least five people including three children from the same family, activists said.

The Britain-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the death toll could very well rise with more people feared to be buried under the rubble of the two destroyed buildings.

Aleppo-based activist said Mohammed Saeed said the raid came before dawn. He added that the aim behind such strikes on residential areas is to "terrify the people and try to turn them against the Free Syrian Army rebel group.

"The regime wants people to say that had the Free Syrian Army not entered the city, the regime wouldn't have bombed us," Saeed said.

The fight for Aleppo, a city of 3 million that was once a bastion of support for President Bashar Assad, began in late July and is critical for both the regime and the opposition. If it falls to the opposition, it would be a major strategic victory in the civil war, giving fighters a stronghold in the north near the Turkish border. A rebel defeat, at the very least, would buy Assad more time.

Activists say nearly 30,000 people have already died in the uprising against Assad's rule that began 18 months ago, inspired by the other revolts around the Arab world against authoritarian rulers.

The Observatory the Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said the airstrikes on the southern neighborhood of Maadi destroyed the targeted buildings. An amateur video showed people digging through a pile of rubble in search of survivors.

Fighting and shelling have been a daily occurrence in Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial capital, since late July when rebels attacked it and took over several neighborhoods. Repeated attacks by government troops to regain control of the areas have so far been unsuccessful.

The battle for Aleppo has marked the first time that the regime has used helicopters and warplanes regularly to strike from the air, bringing an even heavier toll of civilian casualties than before when military forces relied heavily on often indiscriminate artillery and tank shelling.

The Observatory said five people were killed in the latest airstrikes while the LCC said eight died. The LCC said the dead included three children from the same family. Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, said the death toll could rise with more people feared buried under the rubble.

The Observatory and the LCC reported violence elsewhere in the country including attacks by government troops backed by helicopter gunships on the southern town of Sheikh Miskeen in Daraa province.

The Observatory said rebels and troops were fighting near the military air base of Tabaqah in the northern province of Raqqa. Last week, rebels captured a major border crossing with Turkey in Raqqa.

The latest attacks came as the U.N.'s top human rights body prepared to vote on a resolution next week that would condemn abuses in Syria, call for perpetrators to be held accountable and extend the mission of a U.N. expert panel which has been collecting evidence of possible war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The draft resolution was submitted to the U.N. Human Rights Council on Friday by Arab countries including Morocco, Jordan, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Kuwait. It is likely to receive a majority in the 47-nation council when it goes to a vote at the end of next week.

The Geneva-based council received a report earlier this month from the Commission of Inquiry it appointed to investigate abuses in Syria. The panel reported that an increasing number of 'foreign elements,' including Islamic militants, are now operating in Syria. The panel also submitted a confidential list of Syrian officials who it said could be prosecuted for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Pakistan disowns bounty on anti-Islam filmmaker

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? The Pakistani government on Monday distanced itself from an offer by one of its Cabinet ministers to pay $100,000 for anyone who kills the maker of an anti-Islam film, saying the offer does not represent official government policy.

The offer by Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour has drawn criticism in Pakistan even though anger against the film runs high in this predominantly Muslim country.

Bilour said Saturday that he would pay the reward money out of his own pocket. He also appealed to al-Qaida and Taliban militants to contribute to "a noble cause" of eliminating the filmmaker.

The film, made in the United States and entitled "Innocence of Muslims," has enraged many Muslims around the world for its portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester. At least 51 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, have been killed in violence linked to protests over the film, which also has renewed debate over freedom of expression in the U.S. and in Europe.

In Islamabad, the Foreign Office said in a statement Monday that the bounty put on the filmmaker's head reflected Bilour's personal view and was not Pakistan's official policy.

The minister belongs to the secular Awami National Party, an ally in the government of President Asif Ali Zardari. The ANP is also the ruling party in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Bilour's comments appealing to al-Qaida and the Taliban also struck a nerve within his own party, which is considered anti-Taliban and has lost several leaders in the fight against the insurgency.

His colleague in parliament Bushra Gohar demanded the party force Bilour to explain himself. A party spokesman Haji Adeel said the statement was Bilour's personal view, and that the party had sought an explanation from him.

"We are a secular party," he said. "We consider al-Qaida and Taliban as our enemy."

On Friday, Pakistan observed a national holiday, which it termed the "Day of Love for the Prophet," and called on people to go out on the streets to protest against the anti-Islam film peacefully. But the protests turned violent, and at least 21 people were killed. Rioters set fire to government and public property including a church and several cinemas. A number of Pakistani militant groups that are officially banned took part in the demonstrations.

Analysts and columnists have criticized the Pakistani government's decision to call a national holiday, saying it was appeasing radical Islamists. Others have said by calling a national holiday the government managed to keep thousands of potential demonstrators outside of the capital since all businesses were closed.
