Senegalese religious dignitaries leaders hail King Mohammed VI's ...

Dakar, Senegal, March 17, 2013 (MAP)

Senegalese dignitaries and religious leaders who were received Saturday in Dakar by King Mohammed VI, commander of the faithful, warmly praised the Sovereign?s care for their communities, expressing their attachment to Morocco as a spiritual homeland.

?We were very honored to be received by King Mohammed VI. It is very important for us because as a Tijania confraternity, we consider Morocco as a spiritual capital, given our strong attachment to Fes where the confraternity founder Cheikh Sidi Ahmed Tijani was buried?, said Aboubakar Mohamed Mansour Sy who was part of the delegation of the Sy Tijan family from the spiritual city of Tivaouane.

In addition to excellent economic and political ties between Morocco and Senehal, we share a spiritual legacy closely binding our peoples, he added.

On his part, Cheikh Mohamed Niasse, brother of the general Khalife of the religious city of Kaolack expressed the community pride of the sovereign?s care.

Senegalese religious dignitaries leaders with King Mohammed VI's care for their communitiesWe are experiencing the same intense ties dating back to time immemorial between our ancestor Cheikh Oumar Fouty, noted Cheikh Said Nourou Tall, for the Al Aomari Tijane family.

He added that Morocco-Senegal ties are drawing strength from the spiritual links woven by the Tariqa Tijania, stressing that the Malekite rite is uniting all of the Senegalese and Moroccan confraternities.

The secretary general of the Rabita (association) of Moroccan and Senegalese ulema (Islamic theologians) Barham Diop, paid tribute to the sovereign and stressed that the meeting reviewed issues related to the Islamic nation. We have also expressed our admiration for the Sovereign?s action and praised his openness, he added.

Senegalese religious dignitaries leaders with King Mohammed VI's care for their communitiesKing Mohammed VI received on Saturday several Senegalese religious dignitaries and representatives of Islamic confraternities in this west African country.

For Moroccan minister of Habous and Islamic affairs, Ahmed Taoufiq, the meetings are tokens of the solid spiritual links existing between the two countries.

The minister who was present at these meetings said the Senegalese religious dignitaries expressed to the sovereign their attachment and faithfulness to these ancestral spiritual relations and some of them paid allegiance to the Sovereign as Commander of the faithful.

Check out UFC 158 picks from Kevin Iole, Maggie Hendricks and Cagereaders like you

UFC 158 is going down on Saturday night. Here are picks from Yahoo! Sports columnist Kevin Iole, Cagewriter editor Maggie Hendricks and readers like you.

Kevin Iole ? Georges St-Pierre W5 Nick Diaz: I see Nick spending a lot of time on his back eating elbows from Georges. That won't bode well for his chances. If Nick can goad Georges into a standup battle, the entire complexion of the event changes, but I think despite all the animosity, Georges will fight the same precise style he has in the past.

Maggie Hendricks ? Georges St-Pierre TKO4 Nick Diaz: The last time GSP was angry at his opponent going into a fight was against Josh Koscheck. GSP's jab got him the win. He's had plenty of time to listen to Diaz's remarks and prepare a game plan to stop Stockton's finest.

[Related: Order UFC 158 on Yahoo! Sports]

Cagereader - Nick is real slow. GSP is real fast. I think speed beats slow. At least it has for the last 60 years I have been watching fights -- Jim Lowrie

Cagereader - Diaz by TKO 4th round. I believe that Diaz has gotten into GSP?s head. In all the interviews GSP has been reactive and emotional. Since GSP requested this fight instead of taking on the true number 1 contender, Johnny Hendricks, it confirms that Diaz has gotten into his head. GSP will not get into a striking match with Diaz instead he?ll take it to the ground risking being submitted by Diaz?s excellent BJJ. However, before taking Diaz down he will have to walk through some punches. The ?punches in bunches? will stagger GSP and Diaz will finish him. -- Eddie Ledezma

****

Kevin Iole - Carlos Condit W3 Johny Hendricks: Condit is such a complete fighter that it's hard to pick against him. Hendricks clearly has the KO power to end it at any time, and his wrestling ability could take over the fight. But Condit has a more varied game, is more experienced and I think will find a way to pull out a win.

Maggie Hendricks - Johny Hendricks W3 Carlos Condit: Hendricks has added surprising power to his already-elite wrestling skills. He also has a title shot to fight for. Though Condit can be elusive, his takedown defense won't be enough to stop Hendricks.

Cagereader - Hendricks by Decision. Hendricks will push the pace and press condit back against the cage early, and he will use superior clinch work to get the takedown and control condit on the ground. I can also see Hendricks getting multiple takedowns off of Condits kicking game as the time goes by and scoring ground and pound to win each round. -- Greg Bernard

****

Kevin Iole - Jake Ellenberger TKO2 Nate Marquardt: This is a huge fight for Ellenberger, who needs not only a win, but an impressive one, to convince people he belongs in the upper echelon of the welterweight division. I think he gets it by knocking Marquardt down and finishing him with ground-and-pound.

Maggie Hendricks - Nate Marquardt W3 Jake Ellenberger: Marquardt's last fight in Strikeforce was a disappointing loss to Tarec Saffiedine. Marquardt knows how important a win is for his career. It might not be exciting, but it will end with Marquardt's hand being raised.

[Related: Nick Diaz accuses Georges St-Pierre of being on 'plenty of steroids']

Cagereader - Well I actually think the UFC put this fight together with Nate in mind to help him have a safe return back to the UFC. Nate went down a weight class, has been focused on becoming better, and has something to prove. He was already a beast who just lost motivation at middle weight. All fighter have a fighter's chance but Nate is too strong and will control Jake the entire fight. MARQUARDT WINS! by KO! -- Larry B. Fortner

****

Kevin Iole - Nick Ring SUB2 Chris Camozzi: To me, this is very much a pick'em fight, but I was impressed with Ring against Court McGee. Both have had some nice wins recently, but I lean toward Nick.

Maggie Hendricks - Nick Ring W3 Chris Camozzi: I agree with Kevin that this is a pick 'em fight. Ring's wins have been impressive, and he'll have a home crowd behind him.

***

Kevin Iole - Mike Ricci W3 Collin Fletcher: Ricci has been very up-and-down and hasn't won two fights in a row in a long time. But he's fighting in the proper weight class in this bout and I think he'll grind out a victory.

Maggie Hendricks - Mike Ricci W3 Collin Fletcher: Both fighters need a win to avoid a losing streak. Training with GSP and a loud home crowd will give Ricci and edge.

Tom Hooper Rumored to Direct Freddie Mercury Biopic

tom-hooper-freddie mercury biopic

In September 2010, Sacha Baron Cohen signed on to play Freddie Mercury in a biopic scripted by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon).? Despite premature production announcements, the biopic has kicked around in development for the past couple years.? Stephen Frears (High Fidelity) was identified as the frontrunner to direct last summer, but several seasons have passed with no update.? At the very least, the biopic is attracting great talent, because Deadline hears Tom Hooper is now circling the project.? No formal offer has been made to Hooper, but I imagine working with a singing Baron Cohen on the Les Mis set was a fun experience worth repeating.

Speaking of Baron Cohen singing: Producer Graham King hinted the actor may attempt to sing all those Queen songs.? Replicating Freddie Mercury is easier said than done (especially if Hooper would make him sing live on set), so we?ll see if that makes it past the Neat Idea stage.? Morgan?s script starts with Queen?s formation in the early 1970s and ends around their 1985 Live Aid set, which you can watch in full after the jump.

Not sure if this is intentional or just coincidence, but I like that the producers?King, Tim Headington, Robert De Niro, and Jane Rosenthal?are seeking British directors to tell the tale of the London band.

Mercury is a fascinating pop culture figure, although this story version of the story reportedly ends before his struggle with AIDS in the latter half of the 80s and death in 1991.? Still, I only know the broad strokes of the Queen story, so I am excited the details realized on screen, especially if someone as competent as Hooper or Frears steers the ship.

Audi on a roll: Automaker setting sales records

Audi dealers across the country are struggling to meet demand for many of their models, with U.S. officials pressing the factory back in Germany to up their allotment.

It?s a far different situation from what Volkswagen?s luxury subsidiary faced two decades ago. Still roiling from a safety scandal for which it was eventually cleared, Audi sales all but dried up. And in 1992, the maker came close to pulling out of the U.S. market, a decision it reversed only at the last minute.

Today, Audi is one of the market?s fastest-growing luxury brands, setting a series of annual sales records. And though it still lags segment leaders like Lexus, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, it is rapidly closing the gap, with sales for the North American market projected to more than double to 300,000 by decade?s end, according to Audi AG CEO Rupert Stadler.

Its global goals are even more ambitious. In a race with BMW for the worldwide luxury sales lead, Audi is already running ahead of its growth targets, selling 1.46 million vehicles in 2012 and shooting for 1.5 million this year ? a goal it originally had set for 2015. By decade?s end, Stadler is looking for volume to reach 2 million.

Obama Wants to Use Oil, Gas Drilling Royalties for $2B Clean Car Research Trust

To get there, the maker is planning to invest more than $14 billion through just 2015 to support a product program that will cover the increasing breadth of the luxury segment, from the small A3 hatchback to an assortment of new crossover-vehicles, such as the planned Audi Q6.

"There are years in which to harvest in our industry and there are years in which you sow," said Stadler. While the cost will be significant, the payoff should come by 2020. ?We are preparing to (sell) 2 million cars annually."

Along with its new product blitz, Audi plans to rapidly expand production capacity around the world, adding a facility in Mexico, its first in North America, and another new one in China.

?In the coming year, Audi will for the first time build more cars outside Germany than within,? said Stadler, hinting that further overseas production options are under study, including plants in Russia and Brazil.

Audi Reveals New A3 e-Tron; Will Launch New Plug-in Hybrid Every Year

That reflects the rapidly changing nature of the global luxury car market, long dominated by Europe and the United States. While Europe will remain ?a very, very strong pillar of our business,? that market is stable and even declining, so looking forward, Stadler sees ?the big growth patterns for Audi will be in Asia, in China, in North America, also probably in South America.?

That?s not to say Audi will have an easy time of it. BMW last month regained its global sales lead from Audi, fighting back with a mix of new products and aggressive pricing. That?s particularly true in the huge and fast-growing Chinese market, where ?premium dealers have been under a lot of pressure in recent days,? said Deutsche Bank auto analyst Jochen Gehrke.

That has translated into a lot of discounting ? and lower margins. Indeed, Audi?s net profits fell 2 percent last year, to 4.35 billion euros, or $5.7 billion, though its ramped-up investment program takes most of the blame. The company?s operating margins also dipped to a still-strong 11 percent, and ahead of the 8 percent to 10 percent target for the next two years.

A key challenge for the maker going forward will be identifying ?white space? where new products can be targeted. That?s no easy feat these days. There was a time when luxury makers routinely offered only a handful of models each, such as Audi?s small, medium and large A4, A6 and A8 sedans. Today, the highline segment is an alphanumeric soup of sedans, coupes, sports cars SUVs and hard-to-define crossovers.

Meanwhile, the market is being driven by often divergent trends. While Audi will bet heavily on new CUVs, Scott Keogh, head of Audi of America, has big ambitions for the downsized A3 sedan that journalists attending the New York Auto Show will get a sneak peek at next week.

Audi Tapping the Wind to Power its New A3 g-Tron

Audi also made headlines at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month, unveiling its new A3 Sportback e-Tron, a plug-in hybrid hatchback. Like its high-line competitors, Audi has recognized that even upscale buyers want to go green. ?We plan to add one more (plug-in) per year,? said technology chief Heinz Hollerweger during a Geneva interview.

Audi is a very different company from the struggling luxury car maker of the 1990s. It is already a leader worldwide and rapidly gaining ground in the U.S. Operating as a virtual standalone enterprise, Audi has become the single largest financial contributor to the bottom line of parent Volkswagen AG.

It is also a key contributor to VWAG?s goal of toppling Toyota to become the world?s best-selling automaker overall before decade?s end.

So Stadler and his team at Audi will have little room for error.

Movie Review: A Cosmic Love Story, Upside Down Is Sucked Into a ...

For all its cosmic fluff and visually stunning hot air, Upside Down,?a tale of star-crossed lovers that find themselves divided by conflicting gravity fields of two parallel planets, fails to evoke any genuine character depth or emotional authenticity to match is visually expansive and innovative conceptual design.

The movie opens with a shot of stars exploding into supernovas across the night sky. A whispering, raspy voiced teen begins to narrate and explain the complexity of the worlds that exist here. There are two planets in equal orbit around a single sun, and each has its own gravity that its residents are governed by. He immediately solicits an idea of concrete physics that should certainly allow for our acceptance of this world, and hopefully all reasoning to follow should fit as neatly into the pursuing narrative as the opening monologue declares. It does not. Adam is a young boy with a troubled past that barely exists beyond his brief explanation of it. He is an orphan who lives in the lower world, which is where the peasants live in depraved isolation without the glamour and resources of the elitist upper world. There is also one gigantic corporation whose building and tyrannical dominance connect the two worlds and employ most of its citizens, and it?s called Transworld.

Adam narrates us quickly through his youthful struggles where he learns the secrets of the Sage Mountains from his Aunt Betty. She shows him a magical bee pollen that makes pancakes fly, and he is immediately entranced by its possibilities. On his journey to collect this pollen he comes to a mountain top and notices a young girl named Eden wandering along a similar peak in the opposing upper world. Over time they become close and Adam even uses a rope to pull her to his side. Unfortunately, this is strictly prohibited by the draconian law enforcement that maintains proper segregation between both worlds. In their attempt to escape, Adam drops Eden and is captured by the police. For no explained reason, his Aunt Betty?s house is burned and she is driven away forever.

Time passes and Adam tinkers in his science lab concocting some potion from the magic bee pollen that only he possesses. To save myself the pain of reliving this story again, I will now proceed with brevity. Adam goes to work for Transworld where he is ridiculed for his lower world stature, but his cosmetic lift cream that is powered by his magic pollen attracts the attention of the Executives. He manages to find Eden again, who also works for Transworld and has suffered amnesia from her fall so she does not remember Adam. He plies his bushy haired, disheveled charm to no end in hopes to win back her forgotten heart while using inverse matter to maintain gravity in her world. She struggles to remember, but ultimately does and they escape again to the woods for some immaculate conception. In the end Adam triumphs and somehow Eden is pregnant. Blah.

The film makes a consistent effort to distract from its vapid and shallow plot by wowing the audience with gimmicks from the conflicting gravities. At one point, Adam is weighted in the upper world by his inverse matter and while he uses the restroom, his urine comically falls to the ceiling. Adam is similar to Aladdin in his attempts at love, but without the charm and heroic talents or entertaining sidekicks. The movie pays such little attention to logical reason that Adam?s quarter mile free fall causes no injury and he is saved simply by landing in a pine tree. I remember Rambo suffering great pains as he fell from a helicopter through a similar tree ending up bloodied and beaten. Oh well. And speaking of animated children?s movies, how Eden got pregnant with twins from making out is beyond me, but I?m sure it?s easier to explain to children that way. Adam closes the movie by saying, ?but that?s another story.? Let?s just hope they keep this one to themselves.?

Despite all Upside Down?s romantic pageantry, there is little beyond the robust special effects to conjure up anything beyond a mediocre and disingenuous love story. I found myself on many occasions dropping my head into my hands in embarrassment for the filmmakers. As you may be guessing, I did not care for this movie.

Two Tough Sisters, One Tough Mudder: Finding Mental Stability ...

While many students spent their reading weeks studying, partying, sleeping, and resting, my sister and I were in Phoenix, Arizona for Tough Mudder. For three hours and a cumulative total of 11.75 miles of the South West American desert we: ran through live wires, clawed over massive mounds of mud, climbed over 12-foot walls, swam through a shipping container of ice water, ran through hip deep mud water, crawled under barbed wire, and muscled our way through underground trenches, and those are just a few of the 21 military obstacles. Tough Mudder was not simply a race for us, it was the crowning glory marking how far we had come as sisters and as athletes in our fitness journey. This was our reward to ourselves for five months of physical and mental strength training. The hours clocked at the gym lifting weights, planning meals in our kitchens, doing yoga in our living rooms, and running the stairs and paths of the river valley were not to obtain superficial physical goals; they were, and still are, a way to become sisters. Not merely by relation but by friendship, to achieve mental stability and to find a balance in our lives. This gave room for our mental health to grow and strengthen.

Before the race: With adrenalin pumping we were reading to tear the course up!

Recently we have seen a change in public discourse, and media coverage?s approach to mental health. There has been a de-stigmatization surrounding mental health issues; slowly we are seeing the public recognize that being a healthy, contributing member of society means mental strength and well being, as well as physical fitness and well being. The de-stigmatization has manifested itself not only in the public?s acceptance of the need to address mental health issues in an inclusive manner, but also in concrete funding and initiatives being taken by corporations, universities and governments. On February 9th this year, Bell raised $4,813,313.30 for mental health programs through their Canada-wide ?Let?s Talk? campaign. Closer to home, we have seen UAlberta, and the Government of Alberta partner to invest in mental health support for students. In university you are extremely vulnerable as your success can rely on the sanctity of your mental health. I feel as though sharing my mental health journey over the past five months can show others that they are not alone in the struggle to find balance, and that it is normal to experience fluctuations in one?s well being, especially under the stressful conditions of university. Mental health is not a static trait, it exists on a spectrum and where we sit on that spectrum can change dramatically depending on where we are in our lives.

What is the point of university? Sure you?re expanding your horizons, and the degree waiting for you at the end of the four, five, or sometimes six year program could potentially get you a job in a field you are passionate about. If you are lucky, this job will pay you enough money to repay all the debt you?ve accumulated to obtain the degree. However, have you ever tried explaining the value of higher education to a student who has papers, midterms, group projects, twenty-five hours of shift work, rent to pay, and groceries to buy ? oh and that?s just this week? University can sometimes feel more like a masochistic path to self-destruction than a path to success, and keeping your head above water can be difficult when odds seem to be stacked in favour of you drowning.

That was me in September. Drowning. After an incredible summer abroad, then several weeks travelling to see family and friends in Canada, and finally coming home to a new one bedroom apartment, I seemed poised to start my third year of university on the right foot: invigorated from the fresh start. This is how it seemed on paper, but things didn?t go according to plan. I was exhausted, lonely in my one bedroom apartment, and completely defeated by my daunting courseload. There seemed to be no light at the end of the education tunnel; I couldn?t balance my work. My mental health was suffering. I couldn?t get myself out of bed to attend classes, my employers were sending me home early time and again. I was exhausted and sad all of the time. I was like a shadow of my old self. Where was the motivated, driven, positive Blue everyone knew so well? I had to withdraw from one course and was seriously considering withdrawing from the entire semester. Every aspect of my academic and professional life was at risk.

What I needed was something that I could have control over, something I could aim for and work to achieve. What I needed were some goals. My sister Samantha and I sat down and decided that we wanted to be as physically fit as possible. So we made a routine for ourselves. We each wrote out a list of goals to post on our respective fridges. We each started waking up at 5:30am and exercising. We cut caffeine and alcohol out of our diets, for the most part. We changed our perspectives; eating food not simply for its flavour, but for energy. We looked at the grocery store like a gas station: the produce department is the fuel our bodies need to run as efficiently as possible. We shopped the perimeter of the grocery store instead of the middle aisles. Simple carbs and refined sugars now appeared in our diets sparingly. We both took up yoga, one of the few physical activities I have done that encourages physical and mental well being as well as life balance. Samantha and I used social media as a tool to better ourselves, following a host ?of yogis, personal trainers, fitness buffs, and clean eating chefs on Instagram and Facebook who inspired us. We posted pictures to track the progress that we made and stayed as positive as possible on our Facebook and social media accounts. We texted each other pictures and were inspired by each others? progress, seeing muscle where they had never been before, screaming with joy in each others? apartments when we managed to do headstands after months of work.

I don?t think either of us could have predicted back in October that we would end up where we are today. We began drinking upwards of three litres of water a day, and had to buy green tea in bulk, because that was our morning wake-up. The routine gave me my sanity, it gave me something I could rely on. No matter how much homework I had to do, no matter how long my shifts at work were, I knew I would be up at 5:30. I would have ?me? time on my yoga mat, in the river valley, in the gym. I started seeing a psychologist to work out strategies to avoid ever getting back to the toxic headspace I was in in September. My family and friends were supportive and encouraging and my sister became my teammate.

The road has not always been smooth, as I mentioned before we all experience fluctuations in mental health ? that?s just how life goes. What is different is that I have very specific tools to deal with these challenges. In November, at a morning yoga class at Lotus Soul Gym on Whyte, our teacher, Laeonie Ferguson, said something I will never forget: ?You need to be able to recognize the difference between discomfort and pain. When you are at that place of discomfort, observe the experience; don?t be overtaken by it. Realize that yes, you are uncomfortable, but breathe, and know that it will pass.? This mantra is not just for yoga, but all challenges in life. Through physical activity and nutrition, I have not just learned to become fit, but also to be more self-aware and recognize when I am struggling, without being consumed by it. I know there will be bad days, weeks, maybe even months, but I know too that they will pass. When I forget that I have friends, family, and teammates, yoga practice, the squat rack, the Glenora stairs remind me. This year I have seen first-hand that personal well being requires a balance. You cannot address physical health while neglecting mental health; the two must be taken care of together. Through fitness and nutrition goal-setting, and becoming more self-aware, I have learned that ?fitness? is a balance that addresses both your physical and mental self.

So at 11:00am, in the Arizona desert, when my sister and I crossed the finish line together, sporting our matching mud-soaked T-shirts that read ?TEAM HARD KNOX? across the chest and

After the race: I don?t think we?ve ever felt as champion?like as we did crossing the finishing line wearing our hard earned Tough Mudder headbands!

?Arizona 2013 NO B.S.? across the shoulders, we were in disbelief. It was over? There were no more obstacles? Our hands were shaking, we were soaked in mud, we were hungry and thirsty, we did it. Five months and we were closer than we had ever been in our lives, we were stronger than we could have imagined, and we were unstoppable. Tough Mudder was just one achievement in the road to strength for my sister and me. There will be many more obstacles ahead of us, there will be many highs, many lows, but we continue to set goals and to achieve. We will not stop because satisfaction can never be reaped through stagnation. I am not the fastest runner, the greatest yogi, or the strongest woman at the gym, but I am trying, and I find strength in that. We will keep moving forward and pushing each other to be the strongest, healthiest, happiest women we can possibly be.

A Must Read If You Are Planning On Traveling Abroad | Content for ...

Author: Edna D. Kudeta | Total views: 128 Comments: 0
Word Count: 691 Date:

Sometimes, you may want to take a break from the same vacation to the beach that you take every year. This year, why not try a haunted vacation. There are many travel destinations that cater to the supernatural. This article will give you tips for finding the best spooky travel destinations.

Check the alarm in your hotel room when you arrive. Whether by simple accident or obnoxious prank, many a traveler has been awakened early in the morning or worse, in the middle of the night, by the alarm clock at their bedside. If you want to ensure a relaxing start to your vacation, make sure the alarm is off, or at least, set to when you would like to awaken.

If you are staying at a hotel while traveling, be sure to figure out where all of the emergency exits are located. You never know when there might be a fire drill or even a fire. Your map reading skills aren't going to be at their best when you are woken by the alarm at 4 AM, so it's better to know in advance.

A great travel tip is to wear headphones if you want to be left alone when you're traveling. When people see you wearing headphones, they'll be less apt to talk to you because they'll think you're busy listening to music. This can be a great way to keep your personal space.

If you enjoy traveling a fun tip is to make a traveling wish list. Make a list of the top ten places you want to visit when you go, and make it a challenge to go see them all. This makes sure you get the most out of your trip, and gives it a little extra pizazz.

Do some research ahead of time and look for dining credits and coupons for your destination. You can also save a lot of money by getting advice about where to eat before you depart. This is better than asking for recommendations when you are already hungry and in a strange place.

Don't be so tight with your time on a road trip, especially if someone needs you to pull over so that they can go to the restroom. An extra 10 minutes will not destroy your trip or completely ruin your plans. This will also help you avoid grumpy or whiny travelers on the trip.

Use a good quality suitcase or bag when traveling. Cheap suitcases or bags can be flimsy, easily damaged and difficult to maneuver. When you are traveling on public transportation, the last thing you want is for your suitcase or bag to split open and have all your personal belongings fly everywhere.

As a general rule, never take anything with you on a journey that you would be devastated to lose. Items in this category could include jewelry, family photographs and documents. Under normal circumstances, you will not need to carry things like your social security card and extra credit cards. Leave these at home to avoid having to replace them in case of loss or theft.

When packing for a long trip, limit yourself to about two colors of clothing. This will help to ensure that everything you bring to wear on your trip will match with everything else. It will also limit the number of shoes and accessories you need to match with your outfits.

Pack some plastic bags when going on a longer trip. Plastic bags always come in handy when you spill something, for toiletries or if you have some dirty laundry. Meanwhile, some places have laundry opportunities, so it is always useful to carry a plastic bag with you to keep your dirty laundry in.

No matter where you are going or how you plan to get there, the information in this article will offer a fresh perspective to consider as you make your travel plans. Keep these tips in mind as you plan your next recreational trip, and you are sure to discover something new.

Obama, GOP in 'great conversation' on Capitol Hill

Continuing his effort to end political gridlock with Congress, President Barack Obama comes to Capitol Hill to meet with the Senate Republican caucus, in Washington, Thursday, March 14, 2013. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said he had "a great conversation" with Senate Republicans on Thursday, the third stop in his ice-breaking tour of the Capitol this week on the budget and other contentious topics.

The 90-minute meeting with GOP rivals, senators said, featured exchanges on the budget, the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline, tax reform and the regulatory burden on businesses.

"He was very candid. He certainly understands that you can't fix the country without adjusting entitlements to fit the demographics of our country," said Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., referring to benefit programs like Social Security and Medicare. "We'll see where we go from here, but it was a great meeting."

Obama then walked across the Capitol to meet with his House Democratic allies, capping visits this week to the Democratic and GOP conferences of both House and Senate.

Thursday's meetings came as a key Senate panel moved toward party-line approval of a fiscal blueprint that would only modestly trim the budget deficit while protecting safety net programs from slashing cuts proposed by Republicans.

The Senate budget plan, drafted by Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., blends about $1 trillion in modest cuts to health care providers, the Pentagon, domestic agencies and interest payments on the debt with an equal amount in new revenue claimed by ending some tax breaks.

But because Democrats want to restore $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts over the same period ? cuts imposed by Washington's failure to strike a broader budget pact ? Murray's blueprint increases spending slightly when compared with current policies. And after realistic assumptions about war spending are factored in, Murray's proposal would curb the deficit by only a few hundred billion dollars over 10 years. Murray's plan allocates just $50 billion for overseas military operations next year and assumes no war spending whatsoever starting in 2016.

In the House, Budget Committee Republicans approved a 2014 budget plan late Wednesday with an entirely opposite approach. It whacks spending by $4.6 trillion over the coming decade and promises sweeping cuts to Medicaid and domestic agencies while setting a path to balancing the government's books within 10 years. The party-line vote sent the measure to the full House for a vote next week.

The partisan activity in the rival Budget panels contrasts with Obama's charm offensive, which is aimed at exploring the possibility of bipartisan agreement over politically challenging budget issues that have long gridlocked Washington.

Obama is signaling a willingness to adopt some modest steps on Medicare and Social Security, even as many of his Democratic allies wince at the idea. He told House Democrats that he could support a less generous inflation adjustment for Social Security but only as part of a larger budget bargain that includes new taxes.

He told senators to expect a decision on the keystone pipeline sometime this year though he didn't signal whether to expect his administration to approve it, said Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D.

"This will be hard, and it will have to go against his own party to some extent as will some of us on the other side, but that we need to fix the debt for the country," said Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn. "He was candid and open and direct and he didn't sugar coat it. He recognizes that we have some pretty big differences and we ought to keep expectations under control, but he said he believes ? and I think all of us believe ? this is the way we should be doing business together."

Separately, debate continues in the Senate on a bipartisan spending measure wrapping up unfinished work on this year's budget ? the annual spending bills funding the day-to-day operating budgets of federal agencies. Leaders hope to finish that measure, which is required to prevent a government shutdown at the end of the month, on Thursday. Hopes were fading, however.

Senate passage would send the measure, with numerous changes, back to the House, which initially approved it last week.

The debate in the Senate Budget Committee is the first time since 2009 that Democrats in charge of the Senate have advanced a budget blueprint, which opened to predictably poor reviews from the panel's Republicans, who said it was heavy on tax increases and light on cuts to rapidly growing benefit and safety-net programs.

"Is it really possible that after four years, the majority has failed to identify any reforms? That all we have is just a tax-and-spend budget that makes no alteration to our dangerous debt course?" said the top Senate Budget Committee Republican, Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama. "Does the majority believe the government is perfect and requires no reform?"

At issue is the arcane and partisan congressional budget process, which calls for a unique, nonbinding measure called a budget resolution. When the process works as designed ? which is rarely ? budget resolutions have the potential to stake out parameters for follow-up legislation specifying spending and rewriting the complex U.S. tax code.

The House budget plan embraces tough new spending levels required under the unpopular, across-the-board spending cuts that began to take effect this month. But in order to protect the Pentagon, Republicans cut even more deeply into the day-to-day operating budgets of domestic agencies next year, slashing them from the $506 billion projected under the 2011 debt and budget pact to $414 billion ? an unprecedented 18 percent cut.

Murray's budget, meanwhile, not only preserves the spending caps set in the hard-fought 2011 deal but proposes $100 billion in stimulus spending for road and bridge construction, school repairs and worker training.

House Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., has revived his plan that, starting in 2024 for workers born in 1959 or after, would replace traditional Medicare with a voucher-like government subsidy for people to buy health insurance on the open market. Murray proposes modest cuts to Medicare providers.

Ryan proposes slashing the Medicaid health care program for the poor and disabled by more than $700 billion over 10 years, while Murray would trim it by a negligible $10 billion. Ryan promises to eliminate $1.8 trillion in subsidies in the president's health care law; Murray doesn't touch them.

SJC Rules on abuse law and online dating

?On March 13, 2013, in E.C.O. vs. Gregory James Compton, the court vacated the extension of a restraining order the girl's father had obtained against Compton holding 'there was no 'abuse' as required by the statute."

However, the court concluded that "there was evidence of a substantive dating relationship in the circumstances of this case.? General Law ch. 209A, s. 1, directs courts to to adjudge the existence of substantive dating relationships by considering four factors: '(1) the length of time of the relationship; (2) the type of relationship; (3) the frequency of interaction between the parties; and (4) if the relationship has been terminated by either person, the length of time elapsed since the termination of the relationship.'? Here, there was a three-month relationship that involved regular mutual communication. Although, after the daughter's return home from Europe, that communication occurred electronically, many of the transmissions, such as those through instant messaging and Skype, involved 'real-time' communication and face-to-face communication, thus adding a level of intimacy to the relationship...Our conclusion comports with fulfilling the remedial purpose of the statute....Chapter 209A must be interpreted to protect all who are in a substantive dating relationship from abuse, regardless of whether the relationship was developed or conducted by the use of technology."

HBT: Simmons' big day pushes Dutch past Korea

After defending champion Japan barely survived Brazil?s upset bid, South Korea was dealt quite a blow in its attempt to return to the World Baseball Classic finals, losing to The Netherlands 5-0 in Pool B play.

Diegomar Markwell, Orlando Yntema, Leon Boyd and Mark Pawelek combined on the shutout for the Dutch. Shortstop Andrelton Simmons went 3-for-5 with two doubled from the leadoff spot, and Andrew Jones went 2-for-4 with a double as the DH.

Korea played an uncharacteristically sloppy game, committing four errors. The team also collected just four hits, all of them singles.

While The Netherlands has a nice lineup ? the team also features Nationals outfielder Roger Bernadina, Yakult Swallows slugger Wladimir Balentien and top Red Sox prospect Xander Bogaerts ? pitching figured to be its undoing. Korea, though, could get no handle on today?s journeymen, none of whom are employed by major league clubs. The 32-year-old Markwell pitched in the Blue Jays system from 1997-2003, going 5-7 with a 7.04 ERA in Double-A his final season. Pawelek was a 2005 first-round pick of the Cubs, but he never made it past A ball in the Cubs or Reds systems.

Korea will now likely have to come back and beat both Chinese Taipei and Australia in order to advance in the WBC. The Netherlands will be aiming to go to the second round for the second straight tournament. In 2009, the Dutch advanced on a tiebreaker as one of three Pool D teams to go 1-2.

Mich. governor declares Detroit fiscal emergency

Gov. Rick Snyder of Michigan on Friday declared a fiscal state of emergency in Detroit in a move that could lead to the appointment of a financial manager who could file for the largest municipal bankruptcy ever.

Snyder's decision allows the city a 10-day grace period to formulate a plan to fix its finances before the governor reconsiders appointing an emergency manager who would likely drastically reduce services.

The Republican governor said he had identified a top candidate for the position, but he declined to name the person.

"I believe it's appropriate to declare the city of Detroit in financial emergency," Snyder said at a forum in Detroit.

Snyder said he agreed with a Feb. 19 report by a six-member team of experts that concluded Michigan's largest city is in dire financial shape and a plan put in place last April to aid Detroit was not sufficiently working.

The expert team Snyder assembled in December did not officially recommend the appointment of an emergency financial manager, leaving that decision up to the governor.

Detroit officials now have 10 days to request a hearing with the governor about his determination.

After the hearing or the expiration of the 10 days in the case of no hearing, the governor confirms or revokes his determination. A confirmation will assign management of Detroit's fiscal emergency to a Local Emergency Financial Assistance Loan Board composed of three state officials, including the treasurer, who are all Snyder appointees. That board would also appoint a manager for the city, under the current state law.

Detroit officials also will have the ability to appeal the fiscal emergency determination in state court. But that move would likely not delay the appointment of a manager, who could ultimately recommend the city file for bankruptcy. A Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy by Detroit would be the largest ever in the United States.

Detroit has faced the steepest population decline of any American city in recent decades. Once the fifth largest U.S. city that shone as the birthplace of the U.S. automotive industry and Motown music, it now ranks 18th with about 700,000 people - after suffering a 25 percent decline in population between 2000 and 2010.

With the exodus of residents and jobs as the auto industry contracted, the city has suffered from declining tax revenue and rising crime while saddled with the infrastructure and labor costs of a bygone era.

An emergency financial manager for Detroit would have the power to develop a financial plan, revise or reject budgets, consolidate departments, enter into service contracts with other local governments, reduce or eliminate the salaries of elected officials, sell eligible city assets, lay off workers and renegotiate labor contracts. The manager cannot abrogate labor contracts or impose taxes without voter approval under the state's 1990 law.

A new Michigan law that takes effect March 28 will allow existing emergency financial managers to remain in place and will give them additional powers, including the ability to revise or terminate collective bargaining agreements.

Beam me up, Yoda: Obama flubs 'Star Trek' term

(AP) ? He's not a dictator and won't entertain the idea of a "Jedi mind-meld" with opponents. There's no "secret formula or special sauce" he can slip foes to make them see things his way. And not to worry, he says, the situation may look dire but won't be an "apocalypse."

So who was the guy in a suit and tie who showed up Friday in the White House briefing room, mixing metaphors and references to "Star Wars" and "Star Trek"?

"I am not a dictator. I'm the president," Barack Obama declared as he rejected the idea of using Secret Service agents to keep lawmakers from leaving until everyone agreed on a budget. He answered reporters' questions shortly after an inconclusive, 52-minute meeting with the Democratic and Republican leaders of the House and Senate.

"So ultimately, if (Senate Minority leader) Mitch McConnell or (House Speaker) John Boehner say, 'We need to go to catch a plane,' I can't have Secret Service block the doorway. Right?"

Even if he did bar his office ? the oval one ? Obama said he wouldn't do a "Jedi mind-meld" with Congress' top two Republicans to persuade them "to do what's right."

Yoda-quoting nerds, Beltway insiders and even Hollywood heroes were instantly abuzz. The presidential mishmash of sci-fi references went viral, turning off geeks who had considered Obama one of their own after a slip of the tongue that was almost as bad as confusing Klingons and Ewoks, or even Democrats and Republicans.

Jedi are from "Star Wars," while mind melds happened on "Star Trek."

Mister Spock of "Star Trek" weighed in.

"Only a Vulcan mind-meld would be effective on this Congress. LLAP," Leonard Nimoy emailed after The Associated Press sought his reaction. Nimoy signed off with the abbreviation for his "Live long and prosper."

Maybe it was the power of the Force or some kind of Starfleet prime directive, but the White House couldn't ignore comments like that, flashing in and out of time and space and mixed metaphors like a Tardis traveling at warp speed in social media. It later tweeted: "We must bring balance to the force," with a link to an Obama photo inside a border designed to look like outer space.

As for the situation that led Obama to the briefing room in the first place, he could have quoted Bobby McFerrin and just said: "Don't worry. Be happy."

Instead, the president went with: "This is not going to be a apocalypse."
