News for August 5th | Orcas Animal Protection Society

Dogs:
Penny will live in Portland with two active ladies who are dog savvy. ??They found Penny to be the perfect size and love her energy level. ?Being respectful of cats was also a huge bonus. ?They had to repack their vehicle to make room for Penny after spending a week kayaking and hiking on Orcas. ?It sounds like Penny will be a wonderful companion on hikes and may even enjoy a bit of water sport.

Cats:
Yesterday was an incredible day with Penny leaving but also two of our beloved lobby cats went to a home together. ?Dear seventeen year old Iggy and three-legged Trooper have gone to a wonderful home together. ?The family couldn?t bear to separate the buddies and knew Iggy?s former person who passed away. We?ll certainly miss the ?odd couple? in the lobby but what a terrific opportunity for both of them.

Once more we?re helping the overcrowded Friday Harbor Shelter. ?You?ll enjoy meeting our newest Polly. ?She?s a petite tortoiseshell with extra toes on all four feet. ?We have seen several polydactyl cats but she is definitely the most ?poly.? ?Her tail is also unusual with its many twists that make it look like a powder puff. Polly is very friendly, partly because she?s in heat. ?Dr. Joe will make sure she?s spayed on Monday evening.

Another mom cat came from Friday Harbor with her 4 kittens. ?Pammy?s 3 were born on July 19th and this mom?s little bunch arrived on July 25th, a week later. All the babes are about the same size. ?As a reminder, Pammy has one brown tabby and 2 Siamese types. ?The latest mom (unnamed so far) has 3 orange tabbies and a tortie. ?This mom is a tortie as well but has a rather flat face. ?The mom cats are sharing Dog Isolation but are kept separate for now. ?We don?t want either one to feel threatened by the presence of another cat. ?We?ll keep you posted on kitten development since they won?t be available for public viewing for a few more weeks.

A handsome stray cat we?re calling Nick came from the area not far from Orcas Vet Service. ?He?s a mellow tabby with medium length fur. ?We?ll get him tested and vaccinated then have him join one of the community rooms.

Another stray arrived from the Deer Harbor area. ?She?s a light orange tabby adopted from us in 2008 as a kitten. ?We?re trying to track down the original owners to see if she was given away or determine if she was abandoned. ?Lucy is a nice cat and deserves a nice home.

Misc.:
The site work is completed on the property adjoining the shelter so the drifting dust won?t be as intense as it has been. ?The area where the fence will be relocated will be graded and we?ll be able to begin putting our dog exercise and training area back together soon.
