Wiard wins Best of Show - IronMountainDailyNews.com | news ...

IRON MOUNTAIN - Art for All 2012 was held at Bay College West in Iron Mountain on Saturday. Patrons from all over visited the show, which was held in honor of Margaret " Magee" Johnson.

Forty-seven exhibitors provided a wide variety of fine art displays for the public to enjoy and purchase. Vocalists, musicians, and performers offered entertainment throughout the day. Children and their parents had fun painting masks. The silent auction raised funds that will be used for art education programs sponsored by the Dickinson County Council for the Arts.

More than $1,000 was awarded to this year's participating artists.

"The quality of the art work was amazing," said judges Mark Annoye and Teresa Bartel of Green Bay, Wis. "There was a nice variety. It was a very, very nice show."

Bill Wiard's wood products won the Best of Show. The First National Bank and Trust of Iron Mountain sponsored the accompanying $175 prize.

The $175 People's Choice Award was sponsored by Northern Michigan Bank and was won by Dan Recla for his metal sculptures.

The Most Promising New Artist Award of $125 went to Joseph Pacheco for wood pieces, compliments of Dr. Robert and Mary Baker.

Gunner Forstrom from Kingsford was awarded the Student Best of Show and will receive $25 in art supplies from Stevens Decorating and Framing. The following students received an honorable mention ribbon: Shelby Borchart, Niagara; Jenna Hansen, Niagara; Emma Kay Nasi, Kingsford; and Destiny Schintgen, Niagara. These students will receive a gift from The Drug Store.

Several Awards of Excellence were also given out. The first place artists were: Todd Johnson-wood; Monica Mortel-watercolor painting; Steve Wysocki- acrylic painting; Edward Holland-photography; Stephen Berglund-glass; Esther Farrell-fiber; and Wendy Hunt-jewelry. The first place Awards of Excellence earned each artist $75.

Sponsoring these awards were: the Iron Mountain/Kingsford Community Credit Union, First National Bank of Niagara, First National Bank of Norway, Dr. V. and Sashi Mahadev, Dickinson County Healthcare System, and Dickinson County Council for the Arts.

Once again, both artists who completed show evaluations and participants who voted for their favorite artist for People's Choice were entered into drawings for gas cards. The participant winners were Sandi Steele of Felch, Norava Perucco of Vulcan, and Helen Siegle of Norway. The artist/vendor winners were Jayann Erkkila and Suzanne Fraker.

The Art for All Committee extends its appreciation to the public for their participation and patronage of the exhibitors. It would also like to acknowledge: the media for excellent coverage; Bay West staff; Champion, Inc. for providing exhibitor parking; Neal Johnson for his donation; Econo Foods, Home Depot, Smith Castings, Super One Foods, Wal-Mart, and Baker Sign Company for materials, supplies, and assistance; Aaron Harper for emcee abilities; and Don Holmes for setting up the sound equipment.
