Health and Fitness ? Urban Legends exposed for Truth | My Handy ...

It?s not always a bad idea to ignore those who ?think? they know it all at the gym. There are some great tips to be had from talkers at the gym but you can also inadvertently gain false or even harmful information from those who don?t really know what they are talking about. This is not unlike other situations where the talker might not know as much as you think they do. You?ll be best served by taking the advice of trained professionals. These tips can help you get the best information.

There is a greater likelihood that we will accept something as truth if we sense the person saying it is in some position to know, or has some authority. These ?rumors? can be harmful especially if the person does not do the exercise correctly. We?ll explore more about health and fitness myths and facts, please continue reading.

You can find plenty of information about back pain products and information including yoga online. According to all the marketing, yoga can help relieve back pain. While this is true in some cases, it is also misleading and dangerous. Yoga can certainly help with back pain due to muscle issues. For example, you may need to stretch and strengthen certain muscles in your back or other areas. Your back pain will go away as you do that. Back pain due to bone issues, like a problem with a spinal disc, won?t be relieved by yoga. In fact, doing yoga with a spinal column issue can cause serious complications. Over extension is another mythical being that goes something like this, if you aren?t feeling the burn you aren?t doing enough. This can take a day or two for you to really notice the effects of a hard workout. It can be dangerous after years of inactivity to hit the gym hard right away. Don?t rush into it, get a checkup and go slow for a better longer lasting experience.

Exercising can help relieve your feelings of stress. Is it stressful for you to exercise or workout? When you are accomplishing your exercise routine your body is producing a relaxation response. The relaxation your body produces helps you body and mind to become distracted from any stress you may be feeling. To create a natural feeling of euphoria you need to get yourself to a point where endorphins can be released.

You may have some good health and fitness advise of your own. When you hear something that you are in doubt of you should suspend your belief until you have done some research and have creditable information.

Caring for Pets During Hurricane Sandy - Centreville, VA Patch

The Federal Emergency Management Agency via its Ready.gov website has tips for pet owners to keep their pets safe in an emergency.

The full list of FEMA tips is available here.?

Some key tips include identifiying hotels and motels that are pet-friendly if you have to leave your home.

FEMA's tips to shelter your pet include:

  • If you have to leave but can't take your pet: "Confine your pet to a safe area inside -?NEVER?leave your pet chained outside! Leave them loose inside your home with food and plenty of water. Remove the toilet tank lid, raise the seat and brace the bathroom door open so they can drink. Place a notice outside in a visible area, advising what pets are in the house and where they are located. Provide a phone number where you or a contact can be reached as well as the name and number of your vet."?
  • "Most boarding kennels, veterinarians and animal shelters will need your pet's medical records to make sure all vaccinations are current. Include copies in your "pet survival" kit along with a photo of your pet."

Some items you should have onhand in addition to food and any medication needed are:

  • Newspapers (for sanitary purposes)?
  • FEMA suggests to "Feed the animals moist or canned food so they will need less water to drink."
  • "In an emergency, you may have to take your birds with you," says Ready.gov. "Talk with your veterinarian or local pet store about special food dispensers that regulate the amount of food a bird is given."
  • A first aid kit
  • Collar with ID, harness or leash
  • Crate or pet carrier

Print out the attached PDF above for your emergency kit.?

AirBot and WaterBot help localize pollution data collection (video)

AirBot and WaterBot help localize pollution data collection video

Want to do something about pollution in our water and air? Carnegie Mellon's CREATE Lab is working on a few interesting solutions to the problem of localizing pollution data with a trio of devices aimed at making the process accessible and affordable for regular people. First up is AirBot, a "particle counting robot" that monitors pollutants that can contribute to breathing problems like asthma. Aimed at a $99 price point, the little black boxes are portable enough to bring around with you, so you can, say, compare the air quality in areas when apartment hunting. The lab has made six prototype devices (one of which was on-hand during our visit), and is aiming to bring them to market next year.

WaterBot, meanwhile, is set to bring the solution to streams near you. Stick one end in a body of water near your home and it will upload water purity information to the web via a built-in ZigBee module. CREATE's also cooked up the CATTFish, a method for recording such information in your home via, yes, your toilet. Dip one end in the reservoir and the box on top of the tank, and it will give you a reading of the cleanliness of the water being used to refill. That information can then be uploaded to the web via a USB port. The lab is shooting for a $50 price tag on the device.

The big thing here is the ability to let the community take its own readings to build a bigger picture of water and are purity levels through online applications. More information on all of the above devices can be found in the video below.

Don't Buy Growth Stocks Unless... - Zacks Investment Research

When you ask most investors for their favorite stocks, you'll rarely hear them share a blue chip name like Johnson & Johnson, Kraft Foods or WalMart. Instead they will tell you about some amazing growth stock that will be the next Google, Microsoft or Apple.

These investors believe that by simply buying stocks with the greatest earnings growth potential that they will make money. Sadly our research clearly shows this not be true...not even close.

In this article I will dispel the myth about investing in growth stocks just for growth's sake. Instead I am going to shine the light on a path that has more consistently paved the way to profits.

Research Says...

I know that many of your are still shaking your heads in disbelief. Certainly I must be joking, right?

Unfortunately our research details, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the vast underperformance of most growth stocks over the past decade. Here are the results.

*The study had a 4 week rebalancing of stocks between 1/7/2000 and 2/18/2011

Stocks with the lowest projected growth rates actually generated the highest return of +9.5% per year. Each level of additional earnings growth came with decreasing levels of profits for investors. As we look at the most aggressive stocks, with 30%+ expected earnings growth, we find an embarrassingly low +1.3% return. This begs an obvious question...

Why Don?t Most Growth Stocks Pan Out?

The early investors in growth stocks usually do quite well. They take the early risk when almost no one has heard of the company. As the company bangs out earnings surprise after earnings surprise, it gains more investor attention and a much higher share price.

However, at some point the company will be "priced for perfection". Meaning that the PE gets too inflated as people are so sure that the good times will just keep rolling (think of a mini version of the late 90s tech bubble).

Unfortunately the exceptional growth rarely holds up over time. At some point, as the company tries to expand so rapidly, it will stumble. Even if that just means going from a 40% growth rate to a 30% growth rate. On the surface 30% still sounds great...but not to the investors who expected 40%+. So naturally the stock will tank. And tank fast.

I'm sure you've had a few of these stocks in your portfolio over the years. So I don't have to remind you how quickly the losses add up. That, in a nutshell, is the danger of investing in growth stocks.

So What Does Work?

Certainly you could look at the stats above and conclude that stocks with lower projected growth rates generally outperform. That is true. But we can do a heck of a lot better than that.

The key is to find stocks that exceed expectations no matter the growth rate. Meaning that a stock expected to grow profits by 5% and ends up growing by 7% will do very well. Ditto for a stock expected to grow 30% that ends up at 35% actual earnings growth.

I know on the surface it sounds like you need a crystal ball to predict which companies will beat their earnings projections. Gladly it's actually much easier than you think because Len Zacks has done the hard work for you.

In the mid-1970s Len Zacks realized that stocks that had big earnings surprises continued to outperform the market over the next several months. This is what academics call the Post Earnings Announcement Drift...(yes, I know it sounds more like a medical problem than a means in which to invest in stocks ;-)

But Len went a step further. He wanted to find indicators that would show him stocks more likely to have positive earnings surprises BEFORE they happened. If you could do that, then the odds of success were firmly stacked in your favor.

For the next several years Len worked feverishly to discover these indicators. Gladly for all of us he did find 4 leading indicators of future earnings surprises. Three of these measures are ways of looking at brokerage analyst earnings estimate revisions. The last being an analysis of past earnings surprises.

Each factor is potent by itself. Blending them together creates an almost unfair advantage for investors... that advantage is now called the Zacks Rank stock rating system.

Our Zacks #1 Ranked strong buy stocks have produced an average return of +19.2% over the same 11 year time frame as the study noted above. That more than doubles the average of the best stocks from that study. Going back even further to 1986, we find that these #1 ranked stocks have produced a +26% average annual return.

Aye, But Here's the Rub

We so often talk about the Zacks #1 Ranked stocks and their great track record. However, there are over 220 of these Strong Buy stocks to consider at any given time.

That is fine if you are a professional investor with 60-80 hours per week to focus on researching the full list. For the rest of you, it's usually better to consider a hand-selected group of these stocks that you can more easily put into your portfolio.

My Reitmeister Trading Alert portfolio currently has 9 stocks that fit the bill. Normally this portfolio is closed to new members. But we are opening it up once again for a limited time. If you want to learn more, then best do so before it closes up again on Monday October 29th at midnight.

Best, Regards,

(AP) ? The U.S. military did not quickly intervene during the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya last month because military leaders did not have adequate intelligence information and felt they should not put American forces at risk, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday.

In his most extensive comments to date on the unfolding controversy surrounding the attack in Benghazi, Panetta said U.S. forces were on heightened alert because of the anniversary of 9/11 and prepared to respond. But, he said, the attack happened over a few hours and was over before the U.S. had the chance to know what was really occurring.

"(The) basic principle is that you don't deploy forces into harm's way without knowing what's going on; without having some real-time information about what's taking place," Panetta told Pentagon reporters. "And as a result of not having that kind of information, the commander who was on the ground in that area, Gen. Ham, Gen. Dempsey and I felt very strongly that we could not put forces at risk in that situation."

Panetta was referring to Gen. Carter Ham, the head of U.S. Africa Command, and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In a letter to President Barack Obama on Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner questioned whether the White House considered military options during or immediately after the attack, and he questioned what the president knew about the security threats in the country. He said that the national debate over the incident shows that Americans are concerned and frustrated about the administration's response to the attack.

"Can you explain what options were presented to you or your staff, and why it appears assets were not allowed to be pre-positioned, let alone utilized? If these reports are accurate, the artificial constraint on the range of options at your disposal would be deeply troubling," Boehner, R-Ohio, wrote.

U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the attack, which has become a heated campaign issue less than two weeks before the election. Republicans have criticized the Obama administration's failure to more quickly acknowledge that intelligence suggested very early on that it was a planned terrorist attack, rather than spontaneous violence erupting out of protests over an anti-Muslim film.

House and Senate Republicans as well as GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney have criticized President Barack Obama and administration officials over the response to the attack and whether officials failed to provide enough security at the consulate.

And there have been ongoing questions about whether there should have been additional military forces sent to the consulate immediately after it became clear that the Americans were under attack.

As the events were unfolding, the Pentagon began to move special operations forces from Europe to Sigonella Naval Air Station in Sicily. U.S. aircraft routinely fly in and out of Sigonella and there are also fighter jets based in Aviano, Italy. But while the U.S. military was at a heightened state of alert because of 9/11, there were no American forces poised and ready to move immediately into Benghazi when the attack began.

Also, the Pentagon would not send forces or aircraft into Libya ? a sovereign country ? without a request from the State Department and the knowledge or consent of the host nation.

During his news conference, Panetta lamented the "Monday morning quarterbacking" that has been going on about how the U.S. handled the attack. And Dempsey, sitting alongside Panetta, bristled at questions about what the military did or did not do in the aftermath.

Noting that there are reviews already going on, Dempsey added, "It's not helpful, in my view, to provide partial answers. I can tell you, however, sitting here today, that I feel confident that our forces were alert and responsive to what was a very fluid situation."

Military officials have noted that there had been no specific intelligence pointing to a possible attack in Libya, and that there were protests and other unrest in various locations around the Middle East and Africa.

Asked whether the military was on alert in that area because of 9/11, Dempsey added, "Yeah, and let me point out, it was ? it was 9/11 everywhere in the world."

The Senate Intelligence Committee has announced it will hold a closed hearing Nov. 15 into the circumstances surrounding the terrorist attack, including the intelligence and security situation there, and additional hearings will follow.

Sexual Issues for Cancer Survivors | Fight Colorectal Cancer

From FCRC webinar Oct. 2012

With 12 million people in the U.S. living with and beyond cancer, health and psychosocial issues facing survivors are finally becoming active topics of research and discussion.

The Oct. 20thJournal of Clinical Oncology? is a special ?survivorship? issue featuring an array of special articles primarily focusing on the health issues such as bone health, symptoms like? chemobrain, lifestyle factors such as physical activity to help prevent recurrence. Articles also focus on fertility preservation, and sexuality issues in cancer survivors.

?It has become clear that sexual function is often profoundly disrupted by cancer treatment,? wrote the authors of a review article ?Sexuality in Adult Cancer Survivors.??

The special ?survivorship? issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology summarizes progress and research in the past 7 years, since the Institute of Medicine and the JCO first published special reports about what was then an emerging field of survivorship study. In this issue, authors Sharon Bober and Veronica Varela discuss sexuality issues among all cancer survivors.

For those with colorectal cancer, they noted, pelvic surgery and/or radiation can damage nerves and cause erectile and ejaculatory problems for men, and for women, low desire, lubrication problems, pain with vaginal changes.

FCRC webinar explains nerve-sparing rectal cancer surgery

Fight Colorectal Cancer?recently presented nationally-renowned radiation oncology researcher Dr. Joel Tepper of the University of NorthCarolina School of Medicine in an hour-long webinar focusing on sex after rectal cancer treatment. H noted that women can be particularly affected because the rectum shares a very thin wall with the vagina, but that for both sexes, ?not much research or good information is available.? However, Dr. Tepper?s clear, methodical presentation of issues faced by CRC patients?including illustrations of how recently improved surgical techniques can? spare pelvic nerves?goes a long way in helping CRC patients understand sexuality issues and treatments they might consider.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A weak showing in home sales and more disappointing earnings reports are sending stocks lower on Wall Street, extending a weeklong slide.

Stocks had started out higher early Thursday following a strong profit report from Procter & Gamble, but indexes started to weaken in late morning trading after a realtor group said that the pace of home purchase contracts was leveling off.

That turned the stocks of homebuilders sharply lower. PulteGroup was off 4 percent, giving up an early gain. D.R. Horton and Toll Brothers each fell 3 percent.

In midday trading Thursday the Dow Jones industrial average was off 26 points at 13,051. It had been up 87.

The Standard & Poor's 500 fell two points to 1,407 and the Nasdaq fell two points to 2,979.

The stock market has been in a slump for more than a week because of the weak revenue numbers and lower profit projections that have emerged from the latest round of corporate earnings reports.

The Dow gained 127 points Oct. 16 but since then has managed only two daily gains, both of them meager. The average has lost 474 points since that last significant increase.

Among companies reporting earnings Thursday, infant formula maker Mead Johnson Nutrition plunged $6.09 to $63.42 after its revenue came in well below what Wall Street analysts were expecting. The company also cut its forecast for full-year earnings.

Profits at United Airlines declined with fewer people flying, and the company fell well short of Wall Street expectations. The stock fell 77 cents to $19.50, a loss of 4 percent.

Homebuilders fell broadly after the pace of growth in pending home sales slowed last month. PulteGroup, which returned to profitability in the third quarter, gave up an early gain and was trading down 89 cents at $16.56. Toll fell $1.22 to $34.03 and D.R. Horton fell 69 cents to $20.72.

Procter & Gamble was the biggest gainer in the Dow after the consumer products company, whose products include Tide, Gillette and Charmin, reported earnings that beat analysts' expectations. P&G rose $2.55 to $70.63.

Online game maker Zynga jumped 26 cents to $2.39 after the company reported revenue that was stronger than analysts had anticipated. The company also said it would cut costs and enter the gambling business.

Health insurer Aetna rose 38 cents to $44.33 after reporting a 2 percent gain in third-quarter earnings. Higher revenue and lower-than-expected health care claims helped the company beat Wall Street's profit expectations.

Apple and Amazon.com report earnings after the market closes.

European and Asian markets were mixed. The price of crude oil edged down 3 cents to $85.70 per barrel in New York after a week of heavy selling.

As investors moved into stocks, they sold U.S. government bonds, sending yields higher. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note yielded 1.81 percent, up from 1.79 percent late Wednesday.

Soyuz spacecraft commander?Oleg Novitskiy, flight engineer?Evgeny Tarelkin?and NASA's Kevin Ford ended a two-day journey with an 8:29 a.m. EDT (1229 GMT) docking at the orbital outpost as the ships sailed 254 miles (409 km) above the planet.

After making sure seals between the two spacecraft were airtight, the men joined space station?commander Sunita Williams, Japanese astronaut?Akihiko Hoshide?and cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko to return the station?to its full, six-member crew.

The $100 billion station, a project of 15 nations, had had a crew of three onboard since Sept. 16 because of normal rotation schedules.

"It is so great to see all six of you on orbit and to see your smiling faces," William Gerstenmaier, NASA associate administrator for spaceflight, radioed to the crew from the?Russian mission?control near?Moscow.

The 33rd space station?crew blasted off on Tuesday aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in?Kazakhstan.

Ford, who flew as the pilot on a 2009 space?shuttle mission, said he noticed different noises and vibrations riding on the Soyuz, but he found the trip just as enjoyable.

"The two days went really quickly," Ford told family and friends gathered at the?Russian mission?control during a televised welcoming ceremony. "It was an incredible ride."

Ford's Russian colleagues, both of whom are flying for the first time, had a bit of struggle adjusting to the weightless environment of space.

"I have to admit it was a little bit difficult the first day, but then it got better and easier," one of the cosmonauts said through a translator.

"It got tolerable," the other added. "Today, we're feeling great."

One of the first orders of business was transferring 32 Japanese medaka fish from special containers aboard the Soyuz into?Japan's Kibo laboratory, where aquariums have been set up for a variety of experiments.

"The fish are still alive. Aki already has checked on them. He was very worried that they make it here," one of the cosmonauts said, referring to Hoshide.

The crew will have a busy schedule in the coming days. On Sunday, the privately owned Dragon cargo ship, which arrived at the station?on Oct. 10, is due to depart.

The Space?Exploration Technologies' freighter, making the first of 12 supply runs under a $1.6 billion NASA contract, will be returning with more than one ton (907 kg) of science experiments and gear from the orbital outpost, the first big load of cargo to come back to Earth since the space?shuttles stopped flying more than a year ago.

The astronauts also are preparing for the arrival of a Russian cargo ship on Wednesday and a spacewalk the following day by Williams and Hoshide to try to repair a leak in a station?cooling system.

Williams, Hoshide and Malenchenko are scheduled to return to Earth on Nov. 12, leaving the three newcomers on their own until replacements arrive on Dec. 21.

Brewing will start about 8:00 am or 11:17 Jamison time, whichever comes first.
?
Sacrifices and offerings have been made to insure a beautiful brewing day? we?ve arranged for mid 70?s and partly cloudy ? just the way The Woogie ordered it!!
?
What is it?
?
Knights take a day from their busy lives and spend time together brewing.? We?ll have all kinds of different systems working that day, making all kinds of wonderful beers.? Club members bring their systems, brew beer and enjoy a day, night, weekend of food, beer and festivities.
?
We encourage everyone to participate ? doesn?t matter if you?re brewing on high end all grain system or a coffee pot ? Let?s Brew!!
?
Bring snacks, bring beer, bring a friend or two!!? We?ve got the whole day, all night and most of Sunday to play!!
?
Do I have to brew?
?
No.? If you can?t brew or spend an entire day, please feel free to drop by as your schedule permits.? We?ll have all kinds of good things to sample and lots of things going on ? you?re welcome to stop by for a few minutes or spend the day brewing.? Have some friends interested in homebrewing?? Bring them along!!
?
We?ll throw some goodies on the smoker and the grill.? We ask everyone to bring a side dish or snack if you can? and let?s chat it up a bit so we don?t end up with 20 different types of potato salad and nothing else? although there isn?t anything wrong with potato salad!!
?
Where?
?
Woogie?s place? 928 E Mitchell St, Arlington
?
It?s a red brick ranch located about a block and a half to the EAST of the intersection of Collins and Mitchell streets in Arlington.? Mitchell runs East/West and is about a mile south of Division ? it?s a lighted intersection ? you can?t miss it.? We?re at the top of the curve in the road ? about a mile before the place where the old Davis?s barn burned down 100 years ago? you can?t miss it.
?
Ok?maybe you can?
?
We?ll hang the KOBB banner over the garage doors just in case you haven?t been here before? There will be at LEAST one white and one red Jeep sitting in the circular drive.
?
As usual, the gates open early and parking is always free.? Due to the current economic climate, we will NOT offer valet parking this year.? DO NOT give your keys to the labs? they love joy riding and we cannot be responsible for lost or damaged property.
?
The front door will be open, so come on in and wander to the back yard.? If you ring the doorbell, you will be subject to a full body search by the Black Labs.? Security provided for by Big Frog Security and Glock USA.
?
Why?
?
Why not?? It?s not like we need an excuse to brew or drink beer? or do we?? If so, this is it!? Get your kitchen passes in order, drop the kids off with relatives? or bring them along? there?s a big back yard and plenty of dogs to keep everyone busy!
?
Mark your calendars, get out your brewing books and start thinking about what kind of beer YOU want to be enjoying!!

Eurozone debt hits 90 percent of economy's worth

BRUSSELS ? The debt burden of the 17 countries that use the euro rose to 90 percent of the value of its economy at the end of the second quarter, in spite of efforts by many of the countries to cut back on their spending.

The rise reported Wednesday by Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, from the previous quarter's 88.2 percent provides further evidence that stalling economic growth is making it harder for eurozone countries to handle their debts.

The debt problems are getting worse for many euro countries, including Italy, Spain, Ireland and Portugal.

Greece saw the biggest quarterly increase in its debt burden to 150.3 percent of its national income from 136.9 percent. The country's deep recession, which appears headed for a sixth year, is making the debt mountain more burdensome.

Just bought an iPad 3? Check local return policy

2 hrs.

Even journalists and devoted Apple fans were a bit surprised at Tuesday's update of the full-size iPad; generally Apple's products are out at least a year or so before new versions?are announced. But what was merely perplexing for some may be downright infuriating for others, particularly those who just bought an iPad 3 thinking they were safe from obsolescence???for a few more months, anyway.

Some buyers may be in luck, however: As usual, anyone who bought their iPad from Apple in the last two weeks is within the return period, and CNET reports that at least one store is allowing returns for iPads bought as far as a month back as a conciliatory gesture.

This extended return period?hasn't been confirmed by Apple, although one consumer claims to have heard from Apple Care about it. I called an Apple Store in Seattle and they said they weren't doing the extended return period. The manager speculated that larger stores with more inventory might have more freedom to do it. Apple itself?has not responded to our?inquiries, but we will update this article if they get back to us.

There's no risk in calling your local Apple Store and asking, though. Just be sure that your 3rd-gen iPad is in mint condition: no etching, stickers, or wear and tear. Otherwise they won't take it in whether you bought it a month ago or this week.

Were you unlucky enough to you have bought?your iPad 3 just outside the window of return?opportunity? Don't be too put out. The new model got a speed boost and the new Lightning connector, but that's?all. The great screen and form factor are otherwise identical, so be assured you still have a solid tablet in your hands.

How To Innovate In China - Business Insider

A common complaint about China is that while it may be great at copying products (and sometimes not even so great at that), it will never be a real innovator and develop new products.

But Kai Fu Lee, the former head of Google China, disagrees in a?recent LinkedIn post.?He says that we need to broaden our definition of innovation beyond sea-change developments to include smaller, but still important, creative improvements.

He emphasizes that innovation in China, much like many endeavors in China, needs to be understood and approached from a Chinese context. And knowing where to look for Chinese innovation and how to maximize their strengths in innovation can be very valuable for a company.

He goes on to list a couple areas where Chinese led innovation have a lot of potential:

  • Areas with Chinese government subsidies - like alternative energy?
  • Areas where innovation "can be derived by exhaustive experimentation" - like pharmaceuticals

He also lists a couple of good approaches to innovation in China:

  • Hard-work and solid foundation for long-term development as opposed to risk-taking and out-of-the-box approaches for immediate innovation
  • Western-trained researchers leading teams in China

Lee's points are very much in line with the standard approach to China as a place where hard-work and long-term approaches are prioritized but he clarifies how these can be utilized for innovation.

What Is the Worst Budgeting Tip You've Ever Heard?

Personal-Finance-Roundtable-Worst-Budgeting-Tip

Welcome to the?Personal Finance Roundtable, where we tackle some controversial money questions with the help of our favorite personal finance bloggers, once a month.

In the days of?King Arthur, the?roundtable?signified the place where consequential ideas were discussed ? hopefully over good food and good drinks. While we don?t yet have virtual food and drinks, we can at least create a place to discuss important topics related to your finances and get a wide range of viewpoints.?So, without further ado, this month?s question is?

Elle and Rob from Couple MoneyElle from Couple Money: ?The worst piece of advice I received was to keep my mortgage as long as I could to get the tax benefits. The person giving me the advice was talking about the mortgage interest credit. The numbers, however, don?t add up. Paying more interest over the life of the loan to get a small fraction is a money-losing strategy.?

Planting Our PenniesMrs. PoP from Planting Our Pennies: ?Add $10K in non-tax deductible interest payments to your budget (not to mention principal paydowns) each year! Well, that?s not exactly what our ?personal banker? at Wells Fargo said when he offered us a $100K unsecured personal loan at a 10% interest rate, but it may as well have been. Taking a loan or line of credit offer just because it?s offered seems to be some of the worst budgeting advice we?ve ever been given.?

Greg-and-HollyGreg from Club Thrifty: ?My answer isn?t so much of a tip as it is an attitude. I know several people who think that, just because they paid their bills, they stuck to a budget. While paying your bills is great, it is not budgeting. You actually have to sit down each month and write out a paper budget. You have to consciously tell that money where it is going to go. If you don?t, you are bound to mindlessly spend it.?

David BakkeDavid Bakke from Money Crashers: ?Several years ago, I had amassed a significant amount of credit card debt. When I finally decided to do something about it, a family member suggested that I cash in my employer-based 401k plan and pay off all my credit card debt in one fell swoop.?I never took the advice, and I?m glad that I didn?t.

Unless there?s a serious emergency and you have no other recourse, you should never touch your?retirement savings, 401k or otherwise. The first reason not to do this is because you?ll pay an early withdrawal penalty, as well as income taxes on the amount you withdraw. Secondly, you may destroy the nest egg you?ve worked on building up for your retirement. The long-term benefits of compounded interest with a?401k plan?far outweigh any upfront interest costs associated with credit card debt.

MirandaMiranda from Planting Money Seeds: ?The worst budget tip I heard came from a loan officer while I shopped around for a mortgage. He said I could be approved for three times the amount I wanted to borrow. Then he told me it was worth it to take the loan, since the house would only appreciate, and that it made sense to stretch the budget a little, to make it work.?Since my husband and I decided that we didn?t want to be house poor, we chose a loan from another lender.

Stretching our budget to pay for a home that we didn?t really need seemed ridiculous, especially since then we wouldn?t have the money to do other things that we enjoyed. It doesn?t make a lot of sense to tie up so much money in mortgage payments, and we didn?t want to have problems in the event of a financial setback.?

Ben from Money Smart LifeBen from Money Smart Life: ?My least favorite budgeting tip is to start with a blank sheet of paper and write down all your expenses. I?ve never tested it but I?d bet that people who start with a list of expenses and fill in the blanks with their spending estimates are much more likely to create a budget than someone who starts with a blank sheet and has to think up all their expenses on their own.

There?s something intimidating about a blank sheet of paper, you feel as though you?re starting from nothing and have to figure it all out on your own. In contrast, if you start with some kind of template you?re more likely to get started and actually end up with a budget.?

What about you? Tell us in the comments: what?s the worst budgeting tip you?ve ever heard?

And check out our first Personal Finance Roundtable topic: How Many Credit Cards is Too Many?

Did bacteria spark evolution of multicellular life?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Bacteria have a bad rap as agents of disease, but scientists are increasingly discovering their many benefits, such as maintaining a healthy gut.

A new study now suggests that bacteria may also have helped kick off one of the key events in evolution: the leap from one-celled organisms to many-celled organisms, a development that eventually led to all animals, including humans.

Published this month in the inaugural edition of the new online journal eLife, the study by University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard Medical School scientists involves choanoflagellates (aka "choanos"), the closest living relatives of animals. These microscopic, one-celled organisms sport a long tail or flagellum, tentacles for grabbing food and are members of the ocean's plankton community. As our closest living relative, choanos offer critical insights into the biology of their last common ancestor with animals, a unicellular or colonial organism that lived and died over 650 million years ago.

"Choanoflagellates evolved not long before the origin of animals and may help reveal how animals first evolved," said senior author Nicole King, UC Berkeley associate professor of molecular and cell biology.

Since first starting to study choanoflagellates as a post-doc, King has been trying to figure out why some choanoflagellates live their lives as single cells, while others form colonies. After years of dead ends, King and undergraduate researcher Richard Zuzow discovered accidentally that a previously unknown species of bacteria stimulates one choanoflagellate, Salpingoeca rosetta, to form colonies. Because bacteria were abundant in the oceans when animals first evolved, the finding that bacteria influence choano colony formation means it is plausible that bacteria also helped to stimulate multicellularity in the ancestors of animals.

"I would be surprised if bacteria did not influence animal origins, since most animals rely on signals from bacteria for some part of their biology," King said. "The interaction between bacteria and choanos that we discovered is interesting for evolutionary reasons, for understanding how bacteria interact with other organisms in the oceans, and potentially for discovering mechanisms by which our commensal bacteria are signaling to us."

No one is sure why choanoflagellates form colonies, said one of the study's lead authors, UC Berkeley post-doctoral fellow Rosanna Alegado. It may be an effective way of exploiting an abundant food source: instead of individual choanoflagellates rocketing around in search of bacteria to eat, they can form an efficient bacteria-eating "Death Star" that sits in the middle of its food source and chows down.

Whatever the reasons, colonies of unicellular organisms may have led the way to more permanent multicellular conglomerations, and eventually organisms composed of different cell types specialized for specific functions.

Sequencing the choanoflagellate genome

King's 12-year search for the trigger of choanoflagellate colony development was reignited in 2005 when she started to prime cultures of the choanoflagellate S. rosetta for a genome sequencing project. The sequencing of another choanoflagellate, the one-celled Monosiga brevicollis, gave some clues into animal origins, but she needed to compare its genome to that of a colony-forming choanoflagellate.

Surprisingly, when Zuzow tried to isolate the colony-forming choanoflagellate by adding antibiotics to the culture dish to kill off residual bacteria, strange things happened, said King.

"When he treated the culture with one cocktail of antibiotics, he saw a bloom of rosette colony formation," she said, referring to the rose petal-shaped colonies that were floating in the culture media. "When he treated with a different cocktail of antibiotics, that got rid of colony formation altogether."

That "rather mundane but serendipitous observation" led Zuzow and Alegado to investigate further and discover that only one specific bacterial species in the culture was stimulating colony formation. When other bacteria outnumbered it, or when antibiotics wiped it out, colony formation stopped. Alegado identified the colony-inducing bacteria as the new species, Algoriphagus machipongonensis. While she found that other bacteria in the Algoriphagus genus can also stimulate colony formation, other bacteria like E. coli, common in the human gut, cannot.

Working with Jon Clardy of Harvard Medical School, a natural products chemist, the two labs identified a molecule -- a fatty acid combined with a lipid that they called RIF-1 -- that sits on the surface of bacteria and is the colony development cue produced by the bacteria.

"This molecule may be betraying the presence of bacteria," Alegado said. "Bacteria just sit around blebbing off little membrane bubbles, and if one of them has this molecule, the choanoflagellates all of a sudden say, 'Aha, there are some bacteria around here.'"

The signal sets off a predetermined program in the choanoflagellate that leads to cell division and the development of rosettes, she said. The molecule RIF-1 is remarkably potent; choanos detect and respond to it at densities that are about one billionth that of the lowest concentration of sugar that humans can taste in water.

"We are investigating this molecule from many sides. How and why do bacteria make it? How do choanoflagellates respond to it, and why?" King said. She and her team also are analyzing the genome of the colony-forming choanoflagellate and the colony-inducing bacteria for clues to their interaction.

King hopes that this unexpected signaling between choanoflagellates and bacteria can yield insights into other ways in which bacteria influence biology, particularly the biology of the gut.

Coauthors with King, Alegado and Clardy are Zuzow, now a graduate student at Stanford University; Laura Brown, now a faculty member at Indiana University; Shugeng Cao and Renee Dermenjian of Harvard Medical School; and Stephen Fairclough of UC Berkeley. Dermenjian is now at Merck.

Money edges back to Greece as euro exit fear wanes

LONDON (Reuters) - After scrambling to get their money out of Greece as the economy collapsed, Greeks abroad are regaining an appetite for shares and property at home, spurred on by bargain prices and a bet that their country will stay in the euro zone after all.

Property investors and agents say interest in real estate has jumped since the summer and there are tentative signs the financial exodus is slowing, according to central bank, stock market and investment flow data.

"There are deals that didn't make sense but do now as the outside world takes the government more seriously," said Kostas Kazolides, a London-based investor who has been investing in and advising on property deals in Greece and Cyprus for 35 years.

"People are talking about going back in and buying. There are villas in Mykonos going at 30 percent of their value because sellers are feeling the pinch," he said. A 30 percent fall in construction costs was another attraction.

Fears that investments and bank deposits would be redenominated in a rapidly devaluing new Greek currency if Greece left the euro had put the brakes on international investors buying assets like property and shares on the cheap in recent years.

But a coalition government led by conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras that came to power in June has made a positive initial impression on some investors by pledging to do everything needed to keep bailout funds flowing, easing fears of bankruptcy and euro zone exit.

There are signs European policymakers are becoming more conciliatory towards Greece, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel ruling out letting the country default on its debt, making the country's exit from the single currency look less likely for now.

Analysts at U.S. bank Citigroup changed their view earlier this month that Greece would almost certainly leave the euro, lowering its probability of such an event to 60 percent from 90 percent, mainly due to a change of attitude by other euro zone governments.

Data from Lipper, a Thomson Reuters company that tracks the funds industry, shows the amount of money flowing out of Greek equity funds is slower in 2012 than previous years and turned positive in August.

The net outflow from funds investing in Greek equities during 2012 was 17 million euros at the end of August, out of a total asset base of 690 million euros, which indicates a slowdown in investors running for the exit from the 50 million euros of 2011 and 42 million euros lost in 2010.

"You might see more inflows (in future) because the rhetoric changed from the German side," said Georgios Tsapouris, an investment strategist at British private bank Coutts. "At some point you have to move before the market so there is going to have to be some opportunity," he said.

Investors dabbling in the Greek stock market have reaped rewards for their bravado in recent months, with the Athex equity index up nearly 30 percent since early May, outperforming other asset classes such as gold, emerging market equities, oil and some government bonds.

Central bank data suggests sentiment is stabilising after the country's banking system spent years suffering the severe strain from capital flight as savers moved money abroad to protect it from bank failures and possible currency devaluation.

Deposits held by businesses and households climbed slightly during the summer from a five-year low of 150.58 billion euros in June to 153.89 billion euros a month later, the biggest monthly jump in more than three years, before slipping by 0.33 percent in August.

Despite some grounds for optimism, there is still much to deter jittery investors, including a decision by the country's biggest company, Coca Cola Hellenic, to relocate its headquarters to Switzerland and its shares to London this month, citing better access to capital markets.

While Greeks abroad are more prepared than others to invest in their country now, many pulled their money out as the economy turned bad and their willingness to put it back in again still depends on the circumstances being favourable.

"It's important not to underestimate the emotional pull," said Chris Groves, a London-based partner at law firm Withers who advises private clients.

He defended the motivation of expatriate Greek investors.

"There's a sense of duty and it's not right to say rich Greeks are purely motivated by greed. There are much more complex motives," he said.

Property investors will become more confident of paying a fair price as the Greek government begins selling state assets including real estate as a condition of its bailout over the next several months, said Dimitris Manoussakis, head of the Athens office of real estate consultant Savills .

"After the August holidays there was a change," he said, noting Greek investors had become more interested in commercial property like hotels and retail schemes than before and that demand was coming from countries including the US, South Africa and Australia.

"We are now taking emails and calls to request information for property that's on the market. Six months ago it was frozen and we weren't taking those calls."
