In recent years there has been a resurgence of research in algae for applications to biofuels and coproduct development. This resurgence can be seen through the increase in publications in peer-reviewed journals and a plethora of news releases, funding opportunities, private investments, and conferences in this area. Algal Research offers international academic researchers in this field a new publication resource for their publishing their work.

The journal publishes original scientific research papers, review articles and invited commentaries from scientific community, and is fully peer-reviewed.

All articles published in Algal Research are available online through ScienceDirect; first articles in press are now freely available.

The journal is additionally available via Research4Life, the four UN programs HINARI, AGORA, OARE and ARDI that provide developing countries with free or very low cost access to information.

The European Network on Debt and Development works for social justice through research and advocacy on development finance policies. Its current focus areas are improving the effectiveness of North-South public and private flows for development, reducing South-North financial flows and enhancing domestic resource mobilisation. These issues encompass work on defining development effectiveness, resolving the debt crisis and combating illicit capital flows. The network secretariat in Brussels assists its 50 member organisations across Europe, and developing country allies, to understand and influence current policy debates. The purpose of this role is to work in the Eurodad team to help take forward its work on development finance issues. 'The success of this project should improve Parkinson's patients' lives'

BEER-SHEVA, ISRAEL, April 10, 2012 BGN Technologies, the technology transfer company for Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), has signed a licensing agreement for its V-Smart drug delivery technology with Lauren Sciences LLC, a privately held biotechnology company in New York.

Lauren Sciences will develop the technology as a platform for treating a variety of diseases that affect the central nervous system (CNS), including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), as well as brain malignancies.

V-Smart technology is based on nanovesicles made of proprietary building blocks that provide high stability, large encapsulation capacity, targeting to specific cells and tissues, a controlled release mechanism, and passage through biological barriers, including the blood brain barrier (BBB). The V-SmartTM technology pinpoints where the drug will be released in the brain, increasing efficacy and reducing adverse effects.

It was developed by BGU researchers Dr. Sarina Grinberg of the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Charles Linder of the Department of Biotechnology and Department of Clinical Biochemistry Prof. Eliahu Heldman, who also serves as Lauren Science's chief scientific officer. Lauren Sciences will continue to conduct development activities at BGU.

"Our pre-clinical studies demonstrate that novel, nano-sized V-Smart vesicles encapsulate small molecules, peptides, proteins and nucleic acids, cross the BBB and release their encapsulated contents in the brain," said Prof. Heldman. "Our goal is to target, protect and restore dopaminergic neurons (nerve cells) in the brain that deteriorate during the course of Parkinson's disease. The success of this project should improve Parkinson's patients' lives."

The BBB is permeable for small molecules; however, an active drug delivery transport system is required for other substances. There is currently an unmet need and a great medical challenge for a safe, effective and reliable drug delivery transport system to deliver viable chemotherapeutic agents to the brain of patients with brain cancer or other CNS related clinical states.

The V-Smart platform is protected by several worldwide patents filed by BGN Technologies. Lauren Sciences was recently awarded a grant from the Michael J. Fox Foundation to develop a V-Smart therapeutic for Parkinson's disease.

'The success of this project should improve Parkinson's patients' lives'

BEER-SHEVA, ISRAEL, April 10, 2012 BGN Technologies, the technology transfer company for Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), has signed a licensing agreement for its V-Smart drug delivery technology with Lauren Sciences LLC, a privately held biotechnology company in New York.

Lauren Sciences will develop the technology as a platform for treating a variety of diseases that affect the central nervous system (CNS), including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), as well as brain malignancies.

V-Smart technology is based on nanovesicles made of proprietary building blocks that provide high stability, large encapsulation capacity, targeting to specific cells and tissues, a controlled release mechanism, and passage through biological barriers, including the blood brain barrier (BBB). The V-SmartTM technology pinpoints where the drug will be released in the brain, increasing efficacy and reducing adverse effects.

It was developed by BGU researchers Dr. Sarina Grinberg of the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Charles Linder of the Department of Biotechnology and Department of Clinical Biochemistry Prof. Eliahu Heldman, who also serves as Lauren Science's chief scientific officer. Lauren Sciences will continue to conduct development activities at BGU.

"Our pre-clinical studies demonstrate that novel, nano-sized V-Smart vesicles encapsulate small molecules, peptides, proteins and nucleic acids, cross the BBB and release their encapsulated contents in the brain," said Prof. Heldman. "Our goal is to target, protect and restore dopaminergic neurons (nerve cells) in the brain that deteriorate during the course of Parkinson's disease. The success of this project should improve Parkinson's patients' lives."

The BBB is permeable for small molecules; however, an active drug delivery transport system is required for other substances. There is currently an unmet need and a great medical challenge for a safe, effective and reliable drug delivery transport system to deliver viable chemotherapeutic agents to the brain of patients with brain cancer or other CNS related clinical states.

The V-Smart platform is protected by several worldwide patents filed by BGN Technologies. Lauren Sciences was recently awarded a grant from the Michael J. Fox Foundation to develop a V-Smart therapeutic for Parkinson's disease.

A Korean Airlines Boeing 777 sits on the tarmac of Comox Airport after being diverted from Vancouver International Airport due to a bomb threat.

Updated at 5:43 a.m. ET: Two U.S.?F-15s were scrambled to escort a Korean Air?passenger jet?to a Canadian military base Tuesday?after?the carrier's call center received a "credible bomb?threat," NBC News reported.?The aircraft later made an emergency landing.

Korean Air flight 72, which was en route from Vancouver to South Korean capital Seoul, diverted to the Comox base on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, the airline said.

"The (Korean Air) U.S. call center received a call that there was a threat on board the aircraft," Korean Air said in a statement. The threat was received about 25 minutes after the flight took off, The Associated Press reported.

NBC News reported that Canadian authorities had requested U.S. assistance to?escort the?flight back?to Canada.

Two Oregon National Guard F-15s, which took off from Portland, Ore., intercepted?the plane?and shadowed it until it landed at the Canadian base, NBC News reported.

The plane, a Boeing 777, had 147 people including 134 passengers on board, the airline said.

"The airline will decide about the continuation of the flight after discussion with the airport and related authorities," Korean Air said.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Inspector Brian Massey told NBC News early Wednesday?that cargo and luggage was being screened.

Autism by the numbers: Researchers examine impact of new diagnostic criteria

ScienceDaily (Apr. 10, 2012) ? Getting an autism diagnosis could be more difficult in 2013 when a revised diagnostic definition goes into effect. The proposed changes may affect the proportion of individuals who qualify for a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, according to a study by Yale Child Study Center researchers published in the April issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

The proposed changes to the diagnostic definition will be published in the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)."

"Given the potential implications of these findings for service eligibility, our findings offer important information for consideration by the task force finalizing DSM-5 diagnostic criteria," said Yale Child Study Center director Dr. Fred Volkmar, who conducted the study with colleagues Brian Reichow and James McPartland.

Volkmar and his team performed an analysis of symptoms observed in 933 individuals evaluated for autism in the field trial for DSM-4. They found that about 25 percent of those diagnosed with classic autism and 75 percent of those with Asperger's Syndrome or pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified, would not meet the new criteria for autism. The study also suggests that higher-functioning individuals may be less likely to meet the new criteria than individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Volkmar cautioned that these findings reflect analyses of a single data set and that more information will be provided by upcoming field trials overseen by the APA. He stressed that it is critical to examine the impact of proposed criteria in both clinical and research settings.

"Use of such labels, particularly in the United States, can have important implications for service," he said. "Major changes in diagnosis also pose issues for comparing results across research studies."

RENNES, France (AP) ? The man polls say has the best shot at becoming France's next president wants to hire thousands more teachers, renegotiate Europe's expensive, hard-won bailout package, and re-assess his country's role in both Afghanistan and NATO.

But Socialist Francois Hollande appeals less for his platform than for his persona: the innocuous, intellectual everyman is many things that conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy is not.

Hollande, 57, is tapping into a French population wary of international finance, weary of Sarkozy's "bling-bling" personality and eager for change. While countries in struggling Europe shift to the right, France may hand the presidency to the left for the first time in a generation, with repercussions for the continent's direction and France's future.

Part of Hollande's appeal is his Mr. Nice Guy image, but he still must convince voters that he's got what it takes to run a complex, nuclear-armed nation and one of the world's biggest economies.

Hollande isn't the only leftist making headlines in this campaign: Firebrand far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon has amassed some of the biggest crowds so far at rallies blanketed in red communist flags. Melenchon, with the charisma that the mainstream Hollande lacks, is complicating the political calculus.

French voters kick off the balloting in two weeks, with 10 candidates from across the political spectrum facing off in a first-round vote on April 22 that will winnow the race down to two.

While Hollande has slipped a little in recent weeks, polls have suggested for months that he would win the expected two-man finale against Sarkozy on May 6 by a broad margin.

The economic crisis in Europe has felled many governments in recent years. A Hollande victory could break from a recent rightward trend in the continent, and put France out of step with other big European countries like Germany, Spain, Britain and Poland ? all run by center-right or conservative leaders. Italy, hobbled by a debt crisis, is led by technocrat Mario Monti.

Some of Hollande's major proposals could raise eyebrows abroad: As governments enact austerity measures elsewhere in Europe, he wants to hire thousands more teachers. He wants to scrap a European bailout package led by Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. He has pledged to pull all French combat troops out of Afghanistan by year-end, and says that pledge would be the first thing he tells allies at a NATO summit in Chicago in May.

For many in France, the time seems ripe for a return to a Socialist president: the only one in postwar France was Francois Mitterrand, from 1981 to 1995; throw-the-bums-out has been an election theme in Europe; Sarkozy, in part for reasons of personal style, has been unpopular for years; and the financial crisis and debt crises in Europe have emboldened the left.

Hollande is seen as more of a consensus manager and a listener than visionary. For much of his tenure as party first secretary from 1997 to 2008, he served mostly as a water carrier for party elders ? and only now is coming into his own.

His advisers insist to a foreign reporter that Hollande is no old-school Socialist, but a social democrat wary of the economic challenges coming from 21st-century powers like China and India.

Yet while major parties of the left in Europe reformed and tacked toward the political center in recent years ? like Gerhard Schroeder's Socialists in Germany, or Britain's Labour party under Tony Blair, the Socialists in France eschewed such a move.

And when he speaks to the French faithful, Hollande's class-warfare style rhetoric ? inveighing against the financial world that he calls his "adversary", and demanding justice for the underclass ? often draws cheers.

Hollande, who once quipped "I don't like the rich" on TV, got a recent boost in the polls after he announced a proposal to slap a 75-percent tax on income beyond the first ?1 million ($1.3 million) earned each year.

Hollande on Wednesday drew thousands who spilled out of two warehouses at a convention center near the city of Rennes, in the heart of the left-leaning region of Brittany.

The highlight was Hollande's appearance alongside Segolene Royal, his longtime partner and mother of his four children. Royal, who is also Socialist, was the party's nominee in 2007 ? and lost handily to Sarkozy. Hollande and Royal split not long after that election.

On stage, Hollande and Royal appeared just seconds together, and the body language was uncomfortable: they clasped hands from a distance, and smiled to the cheering throng. But the message ? party unity ? was clear. His new romantic partner, political journalist Valerie Trierweiler, looked on from a seat in the crowd.

Hollande's near 90-minute speech covered his platform: A focus on education, job support for French youths facing high jobless rates, equal pay for women, respect for culture and ethnic diversity. Sarkozy has structured his campaign on a theme of a "strong France."

Hollande claimed that Sarkozy, who took office promising economic growth, fiscal responsibility and competitiveness in France, had failed on all ? and promised more responsible Socialist leadership.

"People say to us, 'Watch out, the left is back, it's going to empty the (state) coffers.' It's already happened! 'Watch out, if the left is back, it'll raise the debt'. It's already happened! 'The Left will hurt competitiveness' ? It's already happened," he thundered. "Well, we'll do the opposite."

The rich, he said, will be asked to pay more, and more money will be redistributed "to allow France to pick itself up."

Unlike Sarkozy rallies, where a preppier crowd often hoists tricolor French flags in abundance, the Rennes gathering mostly brought out young students and retirees.

His campaign has been textbook: He launched a 60-point platform months ago, hewing to many Socialist tenets. At times, he comes across as stiff and cautious, but has made no big gaffes.

Hollande's biggest challenge has been to try to project presidential caliber. While his pedigree is top-tier as a graduate of the Ecole National d'Administration ? the French breeding-ground school for both political and corporate elites like former President Jacques Chirac ? he has never run a government ministry.

Under his tenure as party boss, the Socialists suffered one of the biggest shockers in recent French political history: Lionel Jospin lost the first round to far-right nationalist Jean-Marie Le Pen in the 2002 presidential race, later won by Chirac. Hollande calls it the biggest blow of his career and one he won't soon forget.

Hollande was born in the Normandy city of Rouen, the son of a social-worker mother who he admired and a doctor father who backed the political right and whose ideas "forced me to construct my ideas," Hollande writes in his campaign-season book entitled "Changer de Destin" (Change Destiny).

On Les Guignols de l'Info, a satirical fake news show with puppets, Hollande has long been depicted as innocent, wide-eyed and soft-in-the-middle ? with a dopey, hollow laugh.

But in the Sarkozy era, he's tapped into frustration about unemployment and perceived economic inequality. While Sarkozy, a former hard-charging Interior Minister, has trotted out his longtime formula of playing up his security credentials, Hollande has focused on what polls show worry the French most: joblessness and the economy.

The body language at the lectern ? where both Sarkozy and Hollande can excel ? speaks volumes. Hollande often leans on his elbows, or flails his arms about in the air, and laughs. Sarkozy cuts the air in crisp movements, and is seemingly less about engaging his audience than displaying resoluteness.

People who have known Hollande for years say his human touch and his assiduousness ? often unseen ? at the ground game of politics set him apart.

"What you notice most about Francois is that he's well-balanced, has integrity, and feels good about himself," said Frederic Bourcier, the Socialist Party's First Secretary in the region around Rennes, alluding to the image of Sarkozy as hasty, tempestuous and aggressive. "We need something new."

He also said Hollande had reworked himself, with an image makeover ahead of the campaign that included trimming his midsection, and that could serve as an inspiration for the country.

"This guy is tailor-made for France nowadays," Bourcier said.

Democrats Shafting the Military Again: A Financial Sneak Attack by Obama and the Democrats [Reader Post]

Democrats always attack, decimate, reduce, belittle, disarm, and de-fund the military.

Here is some more of the Democrat party putting down the military and making them pay taking their pay.

The United States military forces were greatly reduced by the Democrats after World War I in the years before the December 07, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. At that time our military had been reduced to a very dangerously low level. We had to pay dearly for that foolishness.

Such are the Democrats and their complete denial and ignorance of history.

The Democrats have always despised the American military, who maintains the freedom of the United States, so much so that they continuously attack the American military in any way they can, especially financially.

In the sixties the Air Force was paid twice a month, on the fifteenth and the thirtieth. Most military families lived payday to payday because the pay was so poor. They were forced to plan on two week budgets. Then their payday was changed to once a month, to being paid on the last business day of the month. The pay they planned on and needed on the fifteenth of the month did not happen. The total pay for the month was the same but families who planed on their pay every two weeks had to go an extra two weeks to receive that pay. This was extremely hard on those who had to live from payday to payday. For what it maybe worth, most of these families could have qualified for food stamps. In the military you could not even apply for food stamps.

But the government got a two week cash flow benefit.

So our payday became the last business day of the month, we survived and we adjusted.

Another outrage was promotion freezes; I went through several of these during my twenty plus years in the USAF.

Then there were the years of the pay freezes, no Cost Of Living Allowances (COLA, which was supposed to keep up with inflation).

There were years of reductions in forces, material, weapons, R&D, bases being closed, medical care (promised but not delivered).

There are many more.

Then the payday was changed again to the first business day of the month instead of the last business day of the month. Only a day or two change, but that had an effect on the government?s cash flow. Ours as well but we did not count, again we adjusted.

Here is the latest rip off (no other words apply).

The once a month pay that was paid on the first business day of the month was changed again.

December 2011, the payday was changed, this time the rule was that if the first of the month is a holiday or a weekend the payday would be the last business day of the preceding month.

Only a day or two you say?

Here is what a difference a day or two can make.

The kicker: January the first is always a holiday, therefore the January 2012 pay was moved to December 31, 2011.

The INTENDED consequences were that I and all other retired and active duty military personnel in all branches of military service would be taxed on thirteen months of pay (the thirteenth month was the January 02, 2012 pay that was received on December 31, 2011 and accounted as 2011 pay).

Count the days.

This increased my taxable income enough that part of my Social Security became taxable.

Wait!?.What?

In case you did not know, Social Security IS taxable. Now you know about another democrat party lie.

To continue: this shifting of income from 2012 to 2011 put me in higher tax brackets. It also made part of my Social Security taxable which bumped me into yet another higher tax bracket.

The end result was an additional $251.00 in income taxes. This was effectively a reduction in pay of $251.00 for that ?thirteenth month?.

That may not sound like much, but it is more than one month?s basic utilities (gas, water, and electric) for me.

How would you feel about that?

Obama and the democrats have once again given me and every retired and all active duty military personnel in all branches of service, another screwing. We will all have to pay taxes on thirteen months of pay for 2011. Multiply my cost/loss by the total number of retired and active duty military service personnel in all branches of service.

I am not typical; the real amount will be far higher.

That is a huge amount stripped (stolen) from our military and their families.

Once again our United States military pays the cost.

So where will this money go?

Where did the TARP go?

I can not understand how anyone, especially anyone in the military, can vote for Obama or any Democrat or even believe anything the Democrats say.

Well on second thought, maybe I can. I used to associate with people who were: ?Blissfully Blind?, ?Determinedly Stupid? and ?Invincibly Ignorant?. Thankfully I got away from them without being infected.

In 2012 I will have to pay taxes on twelve months of pay, the January 2013 pay will be moved to 2012. That is twelve months of pay. That means there is no way I can ever recover from this financial fraud.

This is another story you will never see in the MSM (Marxist, Socialist, Media, also known as the propaganda arm of the Obama administration/Democrat party).
